FLSmidth takes process and quality optimisation order from CRH
21 January 2016Denmark: FLSmidth has been awarded a contract for process and quality optimisation of 17 cement plants acquired by the CRH Group in 2015. FLSmidth's ability to deliver the large number of systems within 14 months was a factor in the order.
The order is the largest advanced process optimisation project awarded to FLSmidth and includes process optimisation of 12 kilns and 40 grinding mills, as well as quality optimisation of 14 raw mills. In addition, the order includes a service agreement, covering all 66 applications, where FLSmidth will provide support and on-going remote monitoring and optimisation by its process specialists.
The contract uses FLSmidth's ECS/ProcessExpert and QCX/BlendExpert products. The ECS/ProcessExpert system aims to improve plant performance by stabilising the process of the plant, optimising the production, managing and correcting process disruptions and minimising wear on plant equipment.
The QCX/BlendExpert system controls the proportioning of raw material feed to raw mills to obtain the desired chemical product quality with respect to chemical constraints, process constraints and material costs.
CRH is the third largest building materials supplier in the world and has more than doubled its cement production volume due to the recent acquisition of 34 plants (including grinding stations), divested as part of the Lafarge/Holcim merger in 2015. Many of the plants are already using optimisation systems, but CRH chose to standardise on FLSmidth's ECS/ProcessExpert and QCX/BlendExpert solutions.

FLSmidth to supply OK 36-4 cement grinding system to SOBOCE
11 January 2016Bolivia: SOBOCE has awarded a contract to FLSmidth for an OK 36-4 cement grinding system to be installed at its Viacha cement plant in Bolivia. The scope of supply includes cement grinding system equipment, engineering and site advisory services.
This will be the first vertical roller mill for cement grinding in Bolivia and will produce high strength cement with 5000 Blaine. Furthermore, at 4000m above sea level, it will have the highest installed elevation for any OK mill in the Americas. Additional scope of supply includes a longitudinal stacker, a sizer for gypsum and pozzolan, Airtech filter, Ventomatic silos and a packing plant.
Once installed, the new cement mill grinding system and packing plant will allow SOBOCE to increase its production capacity to meet cement demand in Bolivia. FLSmidth installed the existing line at Viacha in the late 1990s and in 2010 an expansion project that enabled the plant to double its capacity.

FLSmidth appoints representative in Iran
08 October 2015Iran/Denmark: Denmark's FLSmidth has selected Iranian Ehdas San'at Company as its representative for the implementation of projects and services in Iran.
Managing Director of Ehdas San'at Morteza Hashempour and the Director of FLSmidth, Thomas Schulz, have signed a scientific, technical and economic cooperation memorandum of understanding to cooperate in the cement industry in Tehran. Ehdas San'at has agreed to a close cooperation with FLSmidth in the field of producing related equipment and constructing new projects, as well as the optimisation and reconstruction of existing cement plant.
Following the recent agreement between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) group of powers in Vienna on 14 June 2015, Iran has been inundated with offers from foreign companies. Top Iranian officials have repeatedly said that they accept offers only from foreign applicants that make investments in Iran and share technological know-how with the country.
Earlier in September 2015, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Alireza Daemi said that companies from several European and Arab countries have declared deep interest in broadening ties with Iran in the water and power industries. "Companies from Austria, Germany, France, Italy, as well as some Arab countries, have voiced readiness to finance projects in various sectors in Iran," said Daemi. "We seek to increase productivity and efficiency in the domestic power sector by exchanging technological experience and knowledge with foreigners."
FLSmidth enters service contract with Norwegian plant
01 October 2015Norway: FLSmidth has agreed with HeidelbergCement on a one year service agreement contract to support its Norcem cement plant in Kjøpsvik, Norway. The plant is the most northerly in the world. An FLSmidth team will monitor the plant and diagnose and advise the Kjøpsvik-based operators in real-time. This will enable improvement in performance, increased availability and reduced operating costs.
"Optimising equipment performance is difficult without access to a wide range of specialists," said Skage Hem, FLSmidth's vice president for Global Research and Development. "It is not easy for customers with plants in remote corners of the world to recruit specialists. We have an experienced global specialist team ready to support the customers at all
hours of the day anywhere in the world."
Service is increasingly important for FLSmidth and is a growing business. In the last quarter alone service business across FLSmidth grew by 24% compared with the same quarter of 2014. Although global growth has slowed down, the equipment of many of its existing customers still needs to be maintained and optimised in order to increase plant productivity. With more than 90% of the lifecycle cost of cement plants being operating expenditure cost, service agreements are an area of continued growth potential for FLSmidth.

US: FLSmidth has secured an order for the engineering, supply and installation of a new CataMax catalytic solution for a US cement producer. The order includes a new filter installation with catalytic elements, ID fan, flue gas ducts and dust transport equipment.
The CataMax catalytic solution uses ceramic elements with an embedded catalyst. The porous elements not only remove dust particles from the flue gases, but the catalyst embedded also removes total hydrocarbons (THCs) and organic hazardous air pollutants (O-HAPs) in the flue gas. The CataMax catalytic solution is a patent-pending technology from FLSmidth that will help US cement producers to achieve compliance with stricter environmental regulations.
"We are already seeing an increased interest in this technology from other customers in the US as well as from customers in Europe and Asia, where similar legislative restrictions are also expected in the future," said Jacob Sondergaard, vice president of FLSmidth Airtech, part of FLSmidth's product companies division.
