Neocrete raises US$4m seed round for scaling and plant
26 March 2024New Zealand: Neocrete, a New Zealand start-up that decarbonises concrete production, has raised US$4m in seed funding. Wavemaker Partners, a Singapore-based venture capital firm, led the funding round with a 15% stake for US$2.7m. The funding also included contributions from five other investors, including NZ Green Investment Finance, which acquired a 3.8% share for US$700,000. Neocrete, founded in 2018, has developed an additive that can reduce the cement in concrete by 30-50% without loss in strength, increasing its durability.
Wavemaker Partners' managing partner Paul Santos said "Neocrete is designed to scale rapidly by using a cost-efficient production process that can leverage existing infrastructure."
Zarina Bazoeva, Neocrete co-founder and CEO, said that the funding will enable the company "to scale to meet initial global demand for Neocrete’s additive”. The company plans to complete setting up an Auckland manufacturing facility and scale up a research and development programme, "which is on track to produce cement-free, zero-carbon concrete by 2027,” according to Bazoeva.
Shera invests in Philippine fibre cement board plant
15 March 2024Philippines: Shera is investing US$36m to establish its first production hub in the Philippines. Announced by Thunnop Jumpasri, president and country head for Philippines and Malaysia, the move marks a significant expansion in response to the robust growth in the local construction sector.
The new facility, located in Pampanga, commenced initial operations in 2023 and is anticipated to be fully operational by October 2024. With an initial capacity of 100,000t/yr, expected to double in the coming years, the plant will create 150 jobs. After 15 years of supplying fibre cement boards from Thailand and achieving US$27m in Philippine sales last year, Shera aims for 10-15% growth in 2024.
Thunnop Jumpasri said "This will be our first plant outside of Thailand. We plan to export to other countries from the Philippines to Taiwan, Korea and some parts of China, but we prioritise the Philippines first for now."
India: Adani Group will invest US$603m in the construction of a 4Mt/yr clinker plant at Chorgadi and grinding plants in Dewas and Bhopal. The combined capacity will be 8Mt/yr. The move is part of a US$9bn investment which the company says will create 15,000 jobs across various sectors.
Cementos Argos to invest US$128m in operations in 2024
04 March 2024Colombia: Cementos Argos will benefit from US$128m in new investments in 2024. Reuters has reported that the investments will focus on enhancing operations and quality assurance. Parent company Grupo Argos plans to invest a total of US$509m in its subsidiaries throughout the year.
Omran White Cement Company to establish US$2.6m cement facility at Suhar Industrial City
27 February 2024Oman: Omran White Cement Company plans to build a new cement “facility” at Suhar Industrial City, Al Batinah North Governorate. The Times of Oman newspaper has reported that project will command an investment of US$2.6m. Given the price tag, the upcoming facility may be for the distribution and storage of cement, or of raw materials for cement production. Suhar Industrial City is situated within 15km of Sohar port. Omran White Cement Company’s project is one of four recently announced in Suhar Industrial City, with a combined value of US$44.2m.
Eqiom’s Lumbres cement plant upgrade to expand capacity by 57%
26 February 2024France: Eqiom plans to expand its Lumbres cement plant by 57% from 700,000t/yr to 1.1Mt/yr by 2026. The project involves the installation of a new kiln and aims to reduce the plant's CO2 emissions by 20%, its fuel consumption by 35% and its NOx and SO2 emissions by 40% and 80% respectively. The producer plans to invest €300m, including €40m from France Relance funds.
Boral completes maintenance at Berrima plant
26 February 2024Australia: Boral's Berrima cement plant team has successfully concluded its annual kiln shutdown and maintenance period. The producer invested US$13.1m and 100,000 working hours over a period of three weeks. The project required coordination with 50 different contracting companies to undertake mechanical repairs and replace the kiln refractory, which is crucial for protecting the kiln shell from heat damage and ensuring operational safety. Employing Cement 4.0 technology and advanced diagnostic tools, the team efficiently identified the necessary repairs. About 300 employees and contractors were engaged in the specialist tasks, facilitating a rapid resumption of kiln operations.
Update on heat batteries for cement production, February 2024
21 February 2024Valentine’s Day last week included some ‘hot’ news for the cement sector with the announcement that Electrified Thermal Solutions is preparing to build the first commercial-scale pilot of its Joule Hive thermal battery (JHTB) in San Antonio, Texas. The company is working with the Southwest Research Institute on the project along with Buzzi Unicem USA, 3M and Amy’s Kitchen as industrial partners. Advisors include Imerys. The project update follows the award of a US$5m grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) in late January 2024.
The funding description from the DOE’s Industrial Efficiency & Decarbonization Office reports that the end goal is to “turn intermittent renewable electricity into constant industrial grade heat” that can replace fossil fuel usage. Electrified Thermal Solutions aims to test its JHTB thermal energy storage system, which uses electrically conductive refractory bricks, to convert and store electricity as heat at temperatures higher than 1700°C. The JHTB power ranges between 1 - 200MW of thermal output, with duration up to tens of hours, enabling ‘very affordable’ high temperature energy storage and on-demand heat. Notably, it can charge and discharge simultaneously, allowing a continuous heat supply.
Electrified Thermal Solutions is not alone in targeting the cement sector. As Global Cement Weekly has covered previously energy storage is a growing topic of interest with a few large-scale electrical battery units running at cement plants in Pakistan and Taiwan. The other big name in thermal batteries for cement production is Rondo Energy. Both Electrified Thermal Solutions and Rondo Energy are using modular three-dimensional arrays of refractory bricks to store thermal energy and then release it, although they are likely to have key proprietary differences. However, Rondo Energy appears to be further along the industrial adoption process so far. Titan Cement and Siam Cement Group (SCG) invested in Rondo Energy in 2022. Then in July 2023 SCG and Rondo Energy said that they were planning to expand the production capacity of a heat battery storage unit at an SCG plant from 2.4 GWh/yr in mid-2023 to 90GWh/yr. The reason that this matters, as partly explained above, is that fossil fuels contribute about one third of the CO2 emissions created by heating up the kiln in cement production to make clinker. This is dropping globally due to the uptake of alternative fuels, but burning alternative fuels emits gross CO2, however you account for the emissions. Mass adoption of thermal batteries by the sector could potentially cut out this double-accounting and reduce that third down to the carbon footprint of the refractory bricks used. This would then create knock-on issues concerning what to do with the waste streams instead but that is not a problem for the cement sector. These are worries for another day, as we first need to see how thermal batteries work at scale at a cement plant.
A recent feature in the Economist considered whether the mass adoption of electrical power from renewable sources might be an increasingly viable path to decarbonising industry. Geopolitics, faster-than-expected growth in renewables and new technology are all doing their bit to make this possible. As with so much of the carbon agenda it may alter the very concept of the traditional cement production line or at least the speed of change. Just imagine how a future cement plant might look, decked out with a electrical micro-grid, a heat battery, an oxy-fuel kiln, a carbon capture unit and either a chemical plant or gas pipeline junction. Will it happen? Who knows… but it is an exciting time for the cement sector.
Borneo Cement Sabah to inaugurate Nabawan cement plant in 2024
20 February 2024Malaysia: Borneo Cement Sabah expects to commission its US$417m integrated Nabawan cement plant later in 2024. The project additionally involves the construction of energy, road and water infrastructure. Malay Mail Online News has reported that Borneo Cement Sabah is a joint venture of Setia Alam and state-owned Sabah Economic Development Corporation, with investment from China National Building Material subsidiary Sinoma.
General manager Michael Kinsuan said that Borneo Cement Sabah will hire 1000 workers for the plant.
JSW Group to build 10Mt/yr cement plant in Odisha
19 February 2024India: JSW Group’s new upcoming cement plant in Odisha will have a capacity of 10Mt/yr, the Hindu Business Line newspaper has reported. The plant will be situated in an upcoming steel complex, complete with a 900MW power plant and a 52Mt/yr port.
JSW Group’s cement subsidiary JSW Cement operates 19Mt/yr in installed capacity across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and West Bengal. The producer plans to invest US$2.17bn to more than triple its capacity to 60Mt/yr by 2028. It has reportedly entered talks with financial institutions to raise US$723m through an initial public offering (IPO). JSW Group has invested US$3.61bn in Odisha to date, and is committed to investing
US$7.83bn there.
