Altai Cement reportedly planning kiln start-up
10 June 2022Russia: Local Press has reported that Altai Cement plans to start up Kiln 2 at its Altai cement plant. When operational, the kiln will double the plant’s capacity to 2400t/day.
Mexico: Cemex and Coolbrook have signed a memorandum of understanding to test technology to electrify the cement kiln heating process. Coolbrook says that its Roto Dynamic Heater (RDH) technology can heat a cement kiln to 1700°C using electrical power. If generated from renewable sources this could potentially remove around 45% of the carbon emissions in cement production that normally arise from the use of fossil fuels. The companies expect the technology to be ready for commercial use at an industrial scale in 2024. They will jointly evaluate the best production site to test and develop this technology.
Ilpo Kuokkanen, the executive chair of Coolbrook, said "Coolbrook has set a target to build a comprehensive ecosystem around its revolutionary technology and to test its use in as many industrial processes as fast as possible. Together with Cemex, we can bring the technology to cement production and achieve significant emission reductions in one of the most energy and CO2-intensive industrial processes.”
Finland-based Coolbrook is a technology and engineering company that is developing processes to replace the burning of fossil fuels in major industrial sectors. Its RDH has potential applications in cement, steel and chemical production process. Its Roto Dynamic Reactor (RDR) is intended to eliminate CO2 emissions from the steam cracking process used in the production of plastic.
Russia: SibCem subsidiary Angarskcement has restarted kiln four at its plant in Angarsk after a decade of inactivity. The kiln was last used in 2010. The decision to restart the kiln was made in 2021 due to growing demand for building materials in the Irkutsk region and an increase in cement sales. Kiln four was first lit in 1960 and was later upgraded in the early 1980s. It has a clinker production capacity of 720t/day. All four kilns are now running at the cement plant.
Spasskcement runs kiln continuously for 330 days
12 April 2022Russia: Spasskcement has run kiln two at its plant in Primorye continuously for a record of 330 days. This has beaten the previous best runtime of 324 days set in 2021. The kiln has now been shut down for scheduled repairs including replacing refractory lining and maintenance work on mechanical and electrical equipment. 08 April 2022Belgium: CBR has successfully completed an upgrade of systems connected to the kiln of its 0.8Mt/yr Antoing cement plant. The company says that it has modernised the kiln gas cycle, reducing the plant’s power consumption by 2.5%.
The Antoing cement plant previously underwent a capacity expansion and alternative fuels (AF) substitution-increasing upgrade to its kiln line in late 2020.
Saudi Arabia: Yamama Cement has signed a US$443m financing agreement with Saudi National Bank (SNB). The company plans to invest the funds in its relocation of a 10,000t/day kiln line to its Northern Halal, Al Kharj, plant from the site of its former plant in Riyadh. This will help towards its aim of increasing the Northern Halal plant’s capacity to 30,000t/day by 2025. The loan consists of US$213m in long-term financing for a period of eight years, US$150m in refinancing of the long-term funding for a duration of four years and US$80m in short-term financing for one year.
