Turkmencement completes Lebap cement plant upgrade
24 August 2023Turkmenistan: State-owned Turkmencement has successfully carried out an upgrade to its 1Mt/yr Lebap cement plant at Koytendag. The upgrade involves the installation of a new 3000t/day kiln line, supplied by Germany-based thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions. The producer first announced the project in mid-2020, and ordered the new line in mid-2021.
In 2022, the Lebap cement plant produced 1.1Mt of cement, up by 11% year-on-year from 991,000t in 2021.
Uzbekistan: Uzbek six-month cement production was 5.7Mt during the first half of 2023, the Agency for Statistics of Uzbekistan has reported. The figure corresponds to growth of 10% year-on-year.
Tajikistan exports 538,000t of cement in first half of 2023
10 August 2023Tajikistan: Cement producers exported 538,000t of cement during the first half of 2023, down by 20% year-on-year from 676,000t during the first quarter of 2022. Uzbekistan received 342,000t (64%) of Tajikistan's cement exports, while Afghanistan received 194,000t (36%). The Tajik government banned cement exports for five days in July 2023, due to a domestic cement shortage that affected important infrastructure projects. Asia-PLUS News has reported that the government now expects producers to export 1.5Mt of cement throughout 2023. The Tajikistan cement industry is expected to produce 4.5Mt of cement in 2023, corresponding to a capacity utilisation of 80% across its 5.6Mt/yr installed capacity.
US: The United States Geological Survey has reported that the US consumed 40.5Mt-worth of cement shipments in the first five months of 2023. This corresponds to a 4.3% year-on-year fall from five-month 2022 volumes of 41.5Mt. Blended cement, primarily Type IL Portland limestone cement (PLC), accounted for 37% of shipments, compared to 16% in the corresponding period of 2022. Total demand rose by 4.3% year-on-year and by 19% month-on-month to 10.2Mt in May 2023. Imports of cement and clinker totalled 10.5Mt. The leading source of imported cement and clinker were Türkiye, which supplied 3.34Mt (32%), Canada, which supplied 1.58Mt (15%), and Vietnam, which supplied 1.3Mt (13%).
US production of clinker dropped by 2.1% to 29.5Mt in the first five months of 2023, from 30.1Mt a year earlier.
Vietnam: The General Statistics Office (GSO) recorded national cement production volumes of 69.9Mt during the first seven months of 2023. This corresponds to a decline of 5.8% from seven-month 2022 levels. Việt Nam News has reported that July production was 10Mt, down by 2.9% year-on-year.
Throughout 2022, Vietnam produced 116Mt of cement, and increased its production volumes by 5.8% year-on-year.
Vietnamese cement oversupply to drop to 73% in 2023
27 July 2023Vietnam: State-owned Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) has projected that national full-year cement production will rise by 1.7% to 118Mt. Meanwhile, the cement market leader believes that demand will rise by 5.4% to 68.3Mt in 2023. This corresponds to an oversupply of 73%, compared to 78% in 2022.
Việt Nam News has reported that the government recorded a 7% year-on-year decline in Vietnamese cement production to 43Mt and a 10% drop in demand to 39Mt in the first half of 2023.
Azerbaijan: Total national cement production was 1.76Mt during the first half of 2023, according to the State Statistics Committee. This corresponds to a 1.9% year-on-year rise from first-half 2022 levels. Clinker production rose more sharply, by 16% to 1.82Mt, while ready-mix concrete production rose by 15% to 1.77Mt.
Vietnam: Tan Quang Cement says that it fell short of its first-half 2023 cement production target by 80,000t at it 800,000t/yr Trang Da cement plant in Tuyen Quang. The plant will ‘presently’ enter a shutdown period for maintenance. Việt Nam News has reported that the producer attributed the shortfall in production to low demand, amid general national overcapacity.
India: NCL Industries produced 751,000t of cement during the first quarter of the 2024 financial year, up by 23% year-on-year from 610,000t in the first quarter of the previous financial year. Hindu BusinessLine News has reported that the company’s sales volumes also rose by 23% during the quarter, to 742,000t from 603,000t.
Vietnam: Vietnamese cement producers manufactured 61.4Mt of cement in the first half of 2023. This corresponds to a year-on-year rise of 2.7% from levels reported by Global Cement one year ago of 59.8Mt during the first half of 2022. Việt Nam News has reported that full-year production was 116Mt in 2022, up by 5.8% year-on-year from full-year 2021 levels.
