Pakistan: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has ordered cement producers to ensure that all cement bags that leave manufacturing sites include a tax stamp or unique identification marking from October 2022. The new requirement is intended to allow for the electronic monitoring of production and sales of goods, according to the Pakistan Today newspaper. This is part of a set of measures designed to increase tax revenue, reduce counterfeit products and stop smuggling.
South Korea: Korea Cement Association (KCA) members’ cement shipments fell by 90% over two days to 13,000t on 8 June 2022 from 180,000t/day prior to a truck driver strike which began on 7 June 2022. The association claimed that producers lost US$23m-worth of sales in the first two days of the strike, which also affects other industries. 17 ready-mix concrete batching plants in the Seoul area have suspended operations. The Korea Herald newspaper has reported that the association representing the construction industry has also voiced concerns about the supply situation.
China: Anhui Conch Cement has engaged Conch IT Engineering for software platform supply and maintenance services for some of its subsidiaries. The supplier will provide design and technical services for the production process control system software, a sales and product dispatch system, production data uploading and a quality management system for clinker production lines, grinding units, aggregate, commodity concrete and technology modification projects. The value of the work is US$36m.
Pakistani 10-month cement sales drop in 2022
11 May 2022Pakistan: Cement producers in Pakistan sold 44.3Mt of cement in the first 10 months of the 2022 Pakistani financial year, which runs from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022, down by 8.2% year-on-year from 48.3Mt in the corresponding period of 2021.Members of the All Pakistan Cement Producers Association (APCMA) record domestic deliveries of 39.5Mt, down by 1.8% from 40.2Mt, and exports of 4.8Mt, down by 40% from 8.02Mt.
The association said that political and economic uncertainty in March 2022 had stalled construction sector investments. It called on the government to help to increase sales and reduce the cost of cement production.
India: Tamilnadu Cements plans to set up a new grinding plant in Alangulam, Tamil Nadu. The Hindu newspaper has reported that the unit will serve the nearby Arasu cement plant and double its cement capacity to 0.56Mt/yr from 0.28Mt/yr. It will cost US$5.22m and produce the company's Valimai cement.
Tamilnadu Cements has sold 59,000t of Valimai cement to date.
Vicem Hoàng Mai Cement targets US$79.2m in sales in 2022
07 April 2022Vietnam: Vicem Hoàng Mai Cement has announced a full-year sales target of US$79.2m for 2022, down by 1.5% year-on-year from 2021 levels. Its target net profit for the year is US$656,000, more than five times its 2020 figure. The company forecasts cement production of 1.73Mt, up by 11% from 1.56Mt, and clinker production of 1.4Mt, down by 4.1% from 1.46Mt, for the year. It plans to replace 30 – 40% of the natural gypsum currently used in cement production with synthetic gypsum. It will also increase the proportion of ash and slag in its raw materials mix.
The Chúng Khoán newspaper has reported that Vicem Hoàng Mai Cement said that it is experiencing increased costs due to high raw materials and fossil fuel prices. A coal shortage has also disrupted production.
Tanga Cement anticipates return to profitability in 2021
04 April 2022Tanzania: Tanga Cement has advised investors that it expects a ‘significant improvement’ in its results to a profit before tax in 2021, compared to a loss in 2020. The Daily News newspaper has reported that strong sales during the year contributed to the forecast result, along with a drop in finance costs due to a restructuring of debt facilities.
Tanga Cement said “The improved performance is a result of Tanga Cement’s initiative to optimise the sales, logistics and distribution, as well as its continued cost optimisation initiative.” It added “The company has been able to achieve this despite the challenging global economic and operating environment conditions.”
Moroccan domestic cement sales total 14Mt in 2021
31 March 2022Morocco: The Professional Association of Cement Manufacturers (APC) has recorded domestic cement deliveries of 14Mt in 2021. The figure corresponds to 58% of the industry’s 25.8Mt/yr capacity.
Turkish Cement production rises in 2021
25 March 2022Turkey: Members of Türkçimento produced 78.9Mt of cement in 2021, up by 9.2% year-on-year from 2020 levels. Capacity utilisation for the year averaged 71%. Cement sales also rose, by 8.2% to 60.2Mt. Exports fell by 1.9% year-on-year to 30.8Mt, with a value of US$1.26bn, 23% of total sales.
Türkçimento chair Fatih Yücelik said that the sector has ‘rapidly and heavily’ felt the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on its operations. Yücelik said “We continued our activities in 2021 under difficult conditions, following 23% year-on-year growth in 2020. We predict 4% growth in our sector in line with the economic growth target in 2022.”
Austria: Alpacem has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its new headquarters at Wietersdorf, Carinthia. The company will invest Euro6m to establish the new headquarters on the site of its Wietersdorf cement plant. It will contain 50 office work stations, with meeting rooms and socialising zones.
In 2021, Alpacem says that it supplied 2Mt of cement and 350,000m2 of ready-mix concrete to projects in the Alpine/Adriatic region.
