CRH earnings driven by American markets so far in 2018
20 November 2018Ireland: CRH’s sales rose by 3% year-on-year to Euro19.9bn in the first nine months of 2018. Its earnings before interest, taxation, deprecation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased by 2% on a like-for-like basis to Euro2.5bn. The building materials producer said that its earnings had been supported by growth in the Americas despite poor weather. It added that ‘momentum’ remained positive in Europe and demand had improved in Asia. However, its EBITDA dropped by 44% in Asia.
By region the group reported falling cement sales volumes in the UK and Ukraine. Sales volumes rose in most other European territories, with particular growth in Hungary, Germany, Poland, Serbia and Switzerland. In the US it said that its newly acquired Ash Grove Cement assets and ones in Florida had performed in line with expectations. However, sales in Canada fell due to poor weather. Sales in the Philippines rose by 3% due to rising cement sales volumes and prices following growing demand. However, here earnings were hit by higher fuel and power costs.
HeidelbergCement signs upgrade project with CTP Team in Ukraine
31 October 2018Ukraine: HeidelbergCement has signed a contract with Italy’s CTP Team to upgrade its Kryvyi Rih plant. The project includes replacing the existing filtering system and relevant dust handling for drying drum four. CTP Team will supply a new baghouse equipped with SWAP technology for the cleaning of bags with low-pressure compressed air. The new filter is intended to comply with new local environmental regulations. It will be designed specifically to fit with the existing electrostatic precipitator housing. No value for the deal has been disclosed.
Ukrcement says that most wrongly labelled cement is counterfeit
19 September 2018Ukraine: Ukrcement, the Ukrainian cement association, has found in a study that over 80% of cement with the wrong labelling was counterfeit. The research was conducted on 50 cement bags for the consumer market, according to Interfax. 82% of cement proved to be counterfeit, over 50% of the samples were below the declared weight and 56% had weaker strength and did not comply with the В.2.7-46 -2010 national standard for minimum compressive strength.
The association said that the risks of using counterfeit cement vary from loss of time and revenue in smaller projects to a direct threat to human life in larger projects such as high-rise buildings. Local regulations require that cement bags include five items: the name of the producer, the conventional designation of cement, the designation of the normative document, the net weight and a conformity mark.
Ukrainian cement production falls in July 2018
05 September 2018Ukraine: Production of cement in Ukraine fell by 4.7% to 0.96Mt in July 2018 compared to the same month in 2017, according to the State Statistics Service. Production was also 6.1% less than in June 2018.
In the first seven months of 2018, cement production fell by 3.7% to 4.97Mt. Cement production was 9.31Mt for the whole of 2017.
Ukraine bans clinker imports from Russia
30 August 2018Russia/Ukraine: The Cabinet of Ministers has banned clinker imports from Russia. The government says that cement imports from Russia almost doubled in 2017, according to Interfax. Its share in total imports in 2017 was 85 - 87%, and in January - May 2018 it grew to 100%.
"The introduction of cement clinkers into the list of goods banned to import into Ukraine from Russia is carried out as part of the policy of economic opposition to discriminatory actions against Ukraine by the aggressor state," said the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. It added the ban is expected to increase local production. Although a cement deficit is not expected, the ministry said that, if necessary, additional clinker could be imported from the European Union (EU).
According to the draft resolution, the ban on the import of Russian clinker will come into force 10 days after the publication of the document.
Ukraine: Cement production fell by 3.5% year-on-year to 4.01Mt in the first half of 2018. In June 2018 production rose by 5.2% year-on-year to 1.03Mt, according to the Ukrainian News Agency. In 2017 the country’s cement production increased by 2.3% to 9.31Mt.
Ukraine starts cement anti-dumping probe
05 July 2018Ukraine: The Interdepartmental Commission on International Trade has started an anti-dumping investigation on imports of cement from Russia, Belarus and Moldova. It will look at the conduct of Dyckerhoff Cement Ukraine, HeidelbergCement Ukraine, Podilsky Cement and Ivano-Frankivskcement, according to the Uryadovy Courier newspaper. The probe will examine the cement market between 2015 and 2017.
Anhui Conch considering cement plant in Odessa
01 June 2018Ukraine: China’s Anhui Conch has discussed building a cement plant in Odessa with Anatoliy Urbansky, the chairman of the Odessa Regional Council. Delegates from the General Consulate of China in Odessa and the Ukrainian branch of China Metallurgical Construction Engineering Group attended the meeting as well, according to Interfax. Anhui Conch is also considering building a construction materials park and investing in tourism in the region.
Eurocement Ukraine reduces loss in 2017
27 March 2018Ukraine: Eurocement Ukraine has reduced its loss by 14% year-on-year to Euro4.47m in 2017. It nearly doubled its production to 1.12Mt of cement, according to Nezavisimy Stroitelny. Of this total 1.1Mt was shipped to consumers.
Counterfeit cement on the wane in Ukraine
08 February 2018Ukraine: The share of counterfeit products on the cement market in Ukraine dropped to 8.0% in 2017 from a staggering 21.5% in 2014, according to a press release from the Ukrcement association of cement producers, with reference to a study by GfK Ukraine. Ukrcement believes that change was prompted by the signing of a memorandum on the quality of cement between Ukrcement, the Union of Consumers and large distributors of construction materials in 2017.
