India: ACC’s earnings before taxation, interest, depreciation and amortisation (EBTIDA) fell by 26% year-on-year to US$83.1m in the first quarter of 2022 from US$113m in the same period in 2021. Net sales rose by 3% to US$566m from US$552m. Sales volumes of cement dropped by 3% to 7.71Mt but volumes of ready-mixed concrete grew by 5% to 0.87Mm3. The subsidiary of Ambuja Cement and Holcim said that its costs had been negatively affected by a global rise in fuel costs caused by ‘geopolitical events.’
The cement producer said that its new integrated plant at Ametha in Madhya Pradesh is scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2022. It commissioned an upgrade to its Tikaria grinding plant in Uttar Pradesh in February 2022. Waste heat recovery unit projects at its Jamul and Kymore plants are ‘on track’ and the board of ACC has approved the next phase of similar projects at its Chanda and Wadi plants.
Shree Digvijay Cement invests in green energy project
13 April 2022India: Shree Digvijay Cement has executed a share purchase agreement to acquire a 27% stake in a hybrid wind and solar power project from Trinethra Renewable Energy, a power producer, and Continuum Green Energy. It will spend US$1m on the deal, implying a value of US$0.13m/MW. The total installed capacity of the project is 8.1MW.
The hybrid power contract will generate about 37% of total power needed by the plant. When combined with the plant’s waste heat recovery (WHR) system, it will constitute over 65% of the total power needs of the company, representing considerable savings in the cost of power and an improved environment footprint.
India: Shiva Cement's board of directors has approved the launch of a shareholders' vote over plans to increase its Odisha cement plant's capacity by 2Mt/yr. The plan also involves the expansion of the same plant's clinker capacity by 3Mt/yr and the installation of a 12MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant. In addition to this, the company is seeking to open two new limestone mines with a combined capacity of 1.9 - 3.1Mt/yr at Khatkurbahal, also in Odisha. The company has received Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change approval for all of the plans.
ISGEC Heavy Engineering to supply waste heat recovery unit for Shree Cement’s Nawalgarh plant
09 March 2022India: ISGEC Heavy Engineering has received an order from Shree Cement to supply a waste heat recovery (WHR) unit for the integrated 3.8Mt/yr Nawalgarh plant in Rajasthan. The scope of work includes design, manufacture and supply of the system. The supplier says that this will be one of the world’s largest steam-based WHR units by capacity. ISGEC previously supplied two WHR units for Shree Cement’s Raipur plant.
India: Ramco Cements plans to commission a new 2.5Mt/yr clinker production line at its new plant near Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh in February 2022. A 1Mt/yr grinding unit, 12MW waste heat recovery system and 18MW captive power unit at the plant are expected to be commissioned in the 2022 – 2023 financial year, which starts in April 2022.
The cement producer also intends to commission at upgrade to its Nagar cement plant in the 2023 – 2024 financial year. The US$63m project includes installing a new 300t/day kiln at the plant in Tamil Nadu.
Dalmia Cement (Bharat) commissions upgraded Murli cement plant
17 January 2022India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has commenced cement production at its upgraded 2.9Mt/yr Murli cement plant in Maharashtra. The company invested US$125m to install a new fueling system, waste heat recovery (WHR) plant and solar power plant at the facility. It acquired the plant from Murli Industries for US$55.2m in 2020.
The new commissioning brings Dalmia Cement (Bharat)’s total installed capacity to 35.9Mt/yr.
Ramco Cements commissions new 5MW waste heat recovery system at Jayanthipuram cement plant
25 November 2021India: Ramco Cements has commissioned a new waste heat recovery (WHR) unit on Line 3 of its Jayanthipuram cement plant in Andhra Pradesh. The company said that the system consists of two boilers and that the first on the line’s cooler has been started. A second boiler situated at the line’s preheater will be commissioned in June 2022. The new installation increases the Jayanthipuram plant’s WHR capacity by 31% to 21MW.
Philippines government approves Sinoma waste heat recovery project at Cebu cement plant
24 November 2021Philippines: The Board of Investments has approved China-based Sinoma Energy Conservation as the operator of a new 4.5MT waste heart recovery (WHR) unit that will be built at an unnamed cement plant in Naga, Cebu. The project has a budget of US$10.5m, according to the Manila Bulletin newspaper. Commercial operation of the unit is scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.
Cemex Zement appoints Orcan Energy for waste heat recovery system installation at Rüdersdorf cement plant
23 November 2021Germany: Cemex Zement has partnered with sustainable technology supplier Orcan Energy for the establishment of a waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, cement plant. Orcan Energy will supply six generator modules for the installation. When commissioned in mid-2022, the WHR plant will cover part of the plant’s energy consumption. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy contributed 50% of funds for the project.
Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia regional president Sergio Menendez said “Efforts to achieve carbon neutrality at our Rüdersdorf cement plant by 2030 continue apace, and this project to install a WHR system is the latest significant milestone in our journey. It further demonstrates the value of forming expert alliances to investigate and then implement innovative technologies that will ensure the decarbonisation of our operation.”
Japan: Taiheiyo Cement plans to secure a captive power supply for its Saitama cement plant through the installation of a new gas-powered generator. The company says that electricity from the generator will replace purchased energy in the plant's operations. It is also in the process of constructing a new waste heat recovery (WHR) power unit at the facility. Taiheiyo Cement claims that both upgrades will result in a 62,000t/yr reduction in operations' CO2 footprint. Construction is due to commence before 2022 in order for the producer to commission the new equipment in mid-to-late 2023.
Saitama cement plant's former coal and woodchip-powered generator exploded in April 2021. The producer said that work is on-going to prevent the incident's recurrence by investigating the causes of the accident and formulating preventative measures.
