GCC worker dies following explosion at Chihuahua cement plant
28 February 2022Mexico: GCC has reported that a worker at its Chihuahua cement has died in hospital following an explosion on 25 Feburary which injured five others. The company says that it activated all safety protocols in response to the disaster and coordinated its actions with the responding authorities. It continues to support the investigation into the cause of the blast.
The company said “Unfortunately, one of the six injured died in hospital. We are currently in contact with his family, to whom we have expressed our deepest condolences, and with the families of our other injured collaborators to make all our support and resources available to them at this difficult time.”
Cemex’s production costs rise due to new mining tax in Nuevo León
23 February 2022Mexico: The Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) has voiced cement price concerns following the introduction of a new environmental tax on mining activity in the state of Nuevo León. Cemex operates a quarry in the state, and has resultingly experienced a rise in the cost of its cement production. The El Norte newspaper has reported that the producer’s Monterrey, Nuevo León, cement plant supplies cement across northeastern Mexico.
CMIC also lobbied the government to begin awarding public works contracts to private investors instead of the Mexican armed forces. It argued that this would help to generate jobs.
GCC orders upgrade for Samalayuca plant from ThyssenKrupp Polysius
23 February 2022Mexico: GCC has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with ThyssenKrupp Polysius for an upgrade to its integrated Samalayuca plant to increase clinker production capacity, raise the usage of alternative fuels and reduce emissions. The project includes the engineering, supply and modification of the preheater, including cyclones, and an extension to the calciner, with the installation of a Prepol SC-S type system to increase the utilisation of alternative fuels. The work also includes fitting a Polytrack type clinker cooler and the installation of a bypass system. The project will begin in 2022 with operations scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2023.
Cemex to invest US$1.3bn in 2022
16 February 2022Mexico: Cemex says that it will invest a total of US$1.3bn in its business in 2022. US$600m will go towards strategic growth, according to the company.
Chief executive officer Fernando Gondzález said "Overall in 2022, we anticipate a favourable environment with more moderate volume growth in most markets and solid pricing dynamics reflecting high capacity utilisation and input cost iteration. Finally, our objective is to recover margins in line with our goal of operational resilience with our pricing strategy.” He continued "Today, we are very prepared to handle the inflationary change. We have reflected cost pressures in our regular 2022 price announcements scheduled for January and April. We are also assuming that inflation is not transitory and are prepared to respond quickly to changes in the environment."
Cemex tests electric concrete mixer trucks
16 February 2022France/Germany: Cemex has introduced electric vehicles into the concrete mixer truck fleets of its subsidiaries in France and Germany. The El Financiero newspaper has reported that, if successful, the test may lead to continued introductions and tests of new prototype zero-emission concrete mixer trucks in its operations.
Cemex increases sales and earnings in 2021
11 February 2022Mexico: Cemex recorded consolidated net sales of US$14.5bn in 2021, up by 14% year-on-year. Sales rose by 10% to US$4.83bn in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia, by 9% to US$4.36bn in the US, by 23% to US$3.47bn in Mexico and by 16% to US$1.57bn in South, Central America and the Caribbean. The group’s operating earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) also rose, by 18% to US$2.86bn.
CEO Fernando González said “We are very pleased to report exceptional financial and strategic performance during 2021, despite the unprecedented challenges from Covid-19 and cost inflation.” He continued “In 2021, under our Future in Action programme, we accelerated our climate action ambition, establishing more aggressive 2030 decarbonisation goals as well as a detailed plant-by-plant roadmap to reach the targets. With our enhanced roadmap in place, we achieved our lowest carbon emission level on record and our largest annual year-on-year decline. And we pushed the boundaries on innovation, introducing new sustainable products and developing breakthrough decarbonisation technologies. Our performance gives me great confidence that we can reach not only our 2030 climate goal but also our Net Zero ambition.”
Holcim Mexico invests in gas and diesel-powered concrete trucks
07 February 2022Mexico: Holcim Mexico has replaced 11% of its concrete truck fleet with 61 new natural gas and Euro V diesel-fuelled Sinotruk vehicles worth US$6.2m. The company says that some of the trucks run on 100% natural gas, reducing both their CO2 and particulate emissions by 25%. Parent company Holcim hopes eventually to roll out Sinotruk vehicles throughout operations in its Latin American region. Each truck has an 8m3-greater capacity than Holcim Mexico’s previous models, and also generates less noise.
Argentina: Holcim Argentina has appointed Sergio Vaimberg as its Chief Marketing Officer. He joined Holcim in mid-2020 with roles in Argentina and Mexico, according to the Norte en Linea newspaper. Prior to this he worked mostly for Coca-Cola in Argentina. Vaimberg is a certified public accountant, holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and has a postgraduate degree in leadership from the Harvard Business School.
Cemex Ventures invests in HiiROC
02 February 2022UK: Cemex’s corporate venture capital unit Cemex Ventures has invested in gas-to-hydrogen plant producer HiiROC. HiiROC’s thermal plasma electrolysis technology can process biomethane, flare gas and natural gas into hydrogen and carbon black without any CO2 emissions.
Cemex Ventures president Gonzalo Galindo said “HiiROC's solution is sustainable, scalable, cost-effective and has strong growth potential inside the hydrogen ecosystem. This investment is yet another important step in our transition from fossil to alternative fuels (AF) and towards achieving our Net Zero goal for 2050. Cemex is the clear industry leader in the use of hydrogen, and this partnership allows us to further expand our hydrogen knowledge in the ultimate quest to replace fossil fuels with hydrogen in our plants." He added "With hydrogen becoming an increasingly attractive element for industrial decarbonisation, we are excited to be one of the top companies in the cement industry that includes a clean hydrogen production startup in its investment portfolio."
GCC to invest US$500m in North America by 2024
27 January 2022Mexico/US: GCC plans to invest US$500m over the next three years to the end of 2024 on increasing its production capacity and strengthening its logistics and distribution network in North America. New projects in development include the expansion of a cement plant, debottlenecking at the integrated Samalayuca plant in Mexico, the construction of two new terminals and other projects to improve the company’s operational efficiency and its social and environmental strategy. The cement producer reported strong sales in 2021 and it expects even better results in 2022 and 2023, particularly in the US, due to the effect of the US infrastructure bill.
Notably GCC reported that both the kilns at its Odessa plant in Texas were running at full capacity in 2021 and an additional kiln at a plant in Chihuahua, Mexico was complimenting supply to the US state. High demand was also recorded in Montana.
