India: The government of West Bengal plans to commence mining activity at the Deocha Pachami cement block in Birbhum District. The state hopes that the block will support further development of industries, including cement. Financial Express Online News has reported that Mangalam Cement, Purbanchal Cement and Shree Cement all plan to build new cement facilities in West Bengal. Shree Cement will invest US$102m in its planned Purulia grinding plant. Mangalam Cement's potential upcoming grinding plant will serve its planned new integrated cement plant in Chhattisgarh.
Adani Group to invest US$3.13bn in Tajpur port
21 September 2022India: Adani Group has received a letter of intent from the West Bengal government for the establishment of a new deep-sea port in the state for US$3.13bn. Adani Group won an auction to build the port at Tajpur in the district of Purba Medinipur. The project also includes the construction of an 18km-long shipping channel. The facilities will be able to serve vessels with a deadweight tonnage. The port will connect an upcoming industrial and economic corridor between Raghunathpur and Dankuni, with global trade.
HDC Bulk Terminal to establish terminal at Haldia Dock Complex
16 September 2022India: Adani Group subsidiary HDC Bulk Terminal has concluded an agreement with the ports authority of Haldia Dock Complex for the construction of a new terminal at Berth 2 of the Port in West Bengal. The facility will have a handling capacity of 3.74Mt/yr, and will receive bulk solids including raw materials for Adani Group’s cement subsidiaries in the state. The total cost of the terminal’s construction will be US$37.4m. Work will begin before April 2023.
Visaka Industries to build cement board plant in West Bengal
17 August 2022India: Visaka Industries plans to spend US$15m towards building a new fibre cement board plant in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal. The unit will be the company’s fifth cement board plant and the first in the state, according to the Press Trust of India. The project will include solar power generation via roof panels.
Star Cement to establish new 3Mt/yr clinker line
06 June 2022India: Star Cement plans to invest US$129m to establish a new 3Mt/yr clinker line. BusinessLine Online News has reported that producer currently operates 2.8Mt/yr-worth of clinker capacity across two units in Meghalaya. Star Cement says that it plans to increase its presence in the Northeast India, Bihar and West Bengal markets. It will additionally invest US$90 – 103m to establish two new grinding units with a combined capacity of 4Mt/yr at Guwahati and Silchar in Assam.
Star Cement said that projected infrastructure investment growth in Northeast India inspired its investment decision, while it opted for a 3Mt/yr kiln over a 2Mt/yr alternative due to the improved efficiencies it offers.
India: Shree Cement is planning to launch three projects with a total value of US$646m. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that US$476m-worth of the sum will go towards establishing a new 3.8Mt/yr integrated cement plant at Nawalgarh in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. The producer will invest a further US$102m in establishing a grinding plant in Purulia district, West Bengal, to take advantage of ‘favourable’ demand. Lastly, it will invest US$68m in installing solar power plants at ‘various’ cement plants across India.
Shree Cement said “The company has committed to maximising the use of clean energy in its operations. Setting up of the above solar power plants will enhance the proportion of clean energy usage in the total energy consumption of the company.”
India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has commenced commercial production of cement at the new 2.3Mt/yr production line of its Bengal Cement Works cement plant in Midnapore, West Bengal. The new line brings the plant’s total capacity to 4Mt/yr.
Chief operating officer Ujjwal Batria said, “To ensure that demand is met in a sustainable manner, we have deployed the latest machinery and technology at our Bengal Cement Works unit and will be aiming to produce 100% blended cement. This step is also in line with our commitment to become carbon negative by 2040.” He added, “Post the lockdown-led demand disruption, the cement sector has been continuously witnessing buoyancy across the country. This is largely led by revival in demand from the infrastructure and urban housing sectors, along with the demand from individual homebuilders and the government's rural housing schemes especially from east and central regions. Hence, the onset of commercial production at the Bengal Cement Works unit will enhance our ability to contribute towards nation building and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while also catering to the growing demand from the eastern and north-eastern states of the country.”
JSW Cement buys Salboni power plant from JSW Energy
09 March 2021India: JSW Cement has signed a contract with JSW Energy to acquire the latter’s 18MW Salboni thermal power plant for US$13.1m. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that the companies are conducting the transaction on a slump sale basis. The cement producer plans to optimise labour costs in light of low power demand on the unit. Both companies are subsidiaries of JSW Group.
India: Star Cement has announced the completion of its US$61m grinding plant project in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. The Press Trust of India has reported that the 2Mt/yr grinding plant is set to enter production shortly. This will bring the company’s installed capacity to 6.3Mt/yr. The company intends to source clinker from its integrated cement plant in Meghalaya that has mines nearby. Fly ash will be procured from West Bengal or Bihar.
Star Cement plans to discontinue its lease of another grinding plant in Siliguri, West Bengal, at the end of January 2021.
Dalmia Cement (Bharat) to upgrade Bengal Cement Works plant
05 January 2021India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat), plans to spend around US$50m on a 2.3Mt/yr upgrade to its Bengal Cement Works plant in West Midnapore. The project will increase the unit’s production capacity to 4Mt/yr. The company says that it will make the cement plant the biggest in the state of West Bengal. It intends to take advantage of expected growth in cement demand, following the coronavirus-related slowdown, due to affordable housing schemes, real estate and infrastructure projects.
“We have deployed the latest machinery and technology for this addition and will be producing only 100% blended cement so as to ensure reduced carbon footprint as part of our commitment to become carbon negative by 2040,” said Ujjwal Batria, chief operating officer (COO) of Dalmia Cement (Bharat).
