Canada: Rodan Energy Solutions and St. Marys Cement, a subsidiary of Votorantim Cimentos North America, announced a long-term agreement for a 50MWh behind-the-meter battery energy storage system (BESS) at the company’s Bowmanville, Ontario, plant. Rodan Energy said that it will be Canada’s largest BESS installation to date. The battery system will allow the plant to reduce its grid demand during periods of peak electricity use while maintaining essential operations. It will also enable the batteries to be charged during lower-demand periods and used during high peak demand periods. Rodan Energy will develop, own and operate the asset, delivering ongoing energy optimisation through its proprietary FlexOps platform. Rodan Energy said that this project will deliver energy cost savings and strengthen the operational resiliency of the Bowmanville plant. St. Marys Cement will not pay any upfront costs and will benefit from a fully managed, long-term energy solution.

Paul Grod, president and CEO of Rodan Energy Solutions, said “This agreement is a demonstration of what behind-the-meter BESS can deliver for large industrial energy users – real economic savings, a lower emissions footprint and energy security they control. Rodan owns and operates the asset, so our performance is tied directly to delivering meaningful outcomes for our client.”
