India: Dalmia Bharat’s sales rose but its earnings and profit fell in the half-year to the end of September 2018. Its income increased by 10% year-on-year to US$625m from US$570m and its sales volumes grew by 13% to 8.6Mt from 7.6Mt. However, earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased by 8% to US$126m from US$138m and its profit after tax dropped by over a third to US$7.7m from US$12m.

The cement producer said it had reduced its logistic costs despite an increase in diesel prices. It also reported that its alternative fuels co-processing rate was 5.5% in the second quarter of its 2019 financial year with the company focused on raising this. The board of director also announced that the amalgamation with Odisha Cement had been completed.

India: The proposed merger between OCL India and Dalmia Cement East has been approved by the board of directors of OCL India. Following the amalgamation the company will be known as OCL India.

India: OCL India has held a stone-laying ceremony for its third integrated cement plant at its Rajgangpur site in Odisha. Naveen Patnaik, chief minister of Odisha state, attended the event along with the management of OCL India and its owners, Dalmia Cement (Bharat). The new unit will be known as Dalmia DSP.

The new plant will have a 2.25Mt/yr cement and 3Mt/yr clinker production capacity. Once it becomes operational it will increase production at the Rajgangpur site to 6.25Mt/yr of cement and 5.9Mt/yr of clinker.

The project has an investment of US$356m and it is expected to be commissioned by early 2020. As part of the project the cement producer also plans to build a 2.5Mt/yr cement plant with an investment of US$57m at Biswali near Cuttack.

India: Dalmia Bharat's subsidiary OCL India plans to build a new cement plant in Odisha. The new unit will have a production capacity of around 1.7Mt/yr and it will include a waste heat recovery system. It will bring the cement producer’s total cement capacity up to around 8Mt/yr in the states of Odisha and West Bengal. The project is estimated to cost around US$545m. The plant is expected to be completed by mid-2020.

India: Dalmia Bharat and OCL India have agreed to merge creating the fourth largest cement producer in the country with a production capacity of 25Mt/yr. Dalmia Bharat already owns a 75% share in OCL and the merger has been described as a move to ‘simplify the ownership’, according to Puneet Dalmia, managing director of Dalmia Bharat Group, in comments to the Economic Times.

“The merger will simplify the holding structure and create further consolidation in the cement sector,” said Dalmia. “This action further strengthens our position as one of the leading cement players in India, uniquely placed to support India’s economic growth, and demonstrates our commitment towards achieving simplification and consolidation.”

India: Dalmia Bharat Cement has launched two new cement products in Odisha. The two new products - Dhalai Special Dalmia DSP Cement and Dalmia Cement – will be made available across 650 dealers and network partners in the state. Dalmia Bharat Group CEO Mahendra Singhi said that the product launch is expected to increase sales to US$221m from US$177m in the state, according to the Press Trust of India.

Dalmia Bharat Cement, which manages OCL India in Odisha, markets cement under the brand name of Konark. It has cement plants at Rajgangpur and Kapilas in the state. The group has set a sales target of about 75,000t/month for the two newly launched brands in Odisha. Its existing sales volumes across all product lines in the state are around 250,000t/month.

India: OCL India has inaugurated a 5.5MW solar power plant for use by its cement grinding plant in Salboni, Bengal. The 1.35Mt/yr grinding plant was set up in 2014 with an investment of US$93m.

"Our plant at Paschim Medinipore is located strategically to ensure timely and faster delivery of cement across the state. West Bengal is an emerging market for infrastructure development with a host of projects under implementation and thereby auguring well for the cement industry in Eastern India. In our first year of operations in Medinipore we are already operating at 95% capacity utilisation," said Amandeep, director and CEO of OCL India. He added that the solar plant will be the first and largest of its kind in West Bengal

OCL India also operates two cement plants at Kapilash and Rajgangpur in Orissa with a combined production capacity of 5.35Mt/yr.

India: Dalmia Bharat has merged OCL India Limited and Dalmia Cement East Limited ‘Bokaro’ with Odisha Cement Limited. The resulting company will be called OCL India Limited. It has also amalgamated Adhunik Cement with Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited (DCBL) and transferred the power assets in Dalmia Cement Bharat Power Ventures Limited to DCBL.

In a statement the Indian cement producer added that the move would simplify its corporate structure leading to significant unrealised benefits. It added that following the consolidation OCL will become the largest Portland slag cement producer in India.

In early March 2016 Dalmia Bharat received approval from the Competition Commission of India to acquire a 15% stake in its subsidiary Dalmia Cement Bharat from private equity firm KKR for over US$181m in a cash and stock deal. After the purchase, Dalmia Cement Bharat became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dalmia Bharat.

Dalmia Bharat runs cement and power businesses. The group has a presence in southern and eastern India, including the northeast. Dalmia Bharat has a cement production capacity of 25Mt/yr.

India: Dalmia Cement has raised its stake holding in OCL India from 48% to 74.6% through an inter-se share transfer within the promoter group. It acquired a 4.13% stake from Mridu Hari Dalmia and a 22.45% stake from Mridu Hari Dalmia Parivar Trust at a share price of US$10.9 though open market transactions. The deal is worth US$165m. Since the deal involves inter-se transfer, it will not trigger an open offer for OCL India, despite breaching the creeping acquisition limit of a listed firm.

As part of consolidation and growth of the cement sector, Dalmia Bharat Group has been strategically acquiring assets and creating new assets in southern, eastern and northeastern India. OCL India has plants in Odisha and West Bengal. With Dalmia Cement increasing its stake in OCL India, Dalmia group will have 48% of its capacity in south India and the remaining 52% in east and northeast India.

"The move will help to create better operational synergies. It is a step forward in the commitment towards aligning all stakeholders' interests and overall value creations," said Dalmia Bharat. Dalmia Group expects to have a total capacity of 24Mt/yr in the 2015 – 2016 financial year through both greenfield and brownfield projects.

India: Day six of India's coal block auctions, on 19 February 2015, saw UltraTech Cement win the Bicharpur mine in Madhya Pradesh, which has 29.1Mt of coal reserves, for a bid of US$48.3/t. UltraTech beat ACC, Hindalco Industries, Jaypee Cement and OCL India, among others.

Aditya Birla Group's Hindalco Industries won the Gare Palma IV-5 block for US$56.3/t. The mine has estimated extractable reserves of 42.4Mt. It beat a number of rivals, including Ambuja Cement. Jindal Power Ltd won the Gare Palma IV-2 and 3 coal mines in Chhattisgarh, which have extractable coal reserves of 156Mt, for an estimated US$270m.
