Ethiopia: Derba MIDROC Cement is reportedly ready to sign a contract with China National Building Material (CNBM), for the latter to commence construction of Derba MIDROC Cement's 2.74Mt/yr Mughar Valley cement plant in Oromia. The producer said that it expects to invest US$500m in the project, 30% higher than its previous estimate of US$385m. Addis Fortune has reported that Derba MIDROC Cement now believes there to be adequate energy infrastructure to support the plant, following China-based Sinohydro's construction of a new US$12m power line from nearby Chanco.

When commissioned, the plant will double Derba MIDROC Cement's capacity and create 3000 new jobs in Oromia. The producer also hopes to ease the ongoing national cement shortage. The Ministry of Mines recorded domestic production of 7.6Mt in 2022, against demand of 36Mt.

Bolivia: Bolivia produced 915,000t of cement during the first quarter of 2023, up by 3.2% year-on-year from 886,000t in the first quarter of 2022. Domestic consumption rose by 1.9% to 871,000t in the period under review. The National Institute of Statistics has recorded total national cement imports worth US$35m, up by 45% from US$24.1m.

Vietnam: Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA) members produced 40Mt of cement during the first four months of 2023. The volume corresponds to a 4.8% drop from four-month 2022 levels.

Vietnam produced 116Mt of cement in 2022, up by 5.8% year-on-year from 2021 levels.

Pakistan: Thatta Cement recorded a 33% year-on-year rise in its sales during the first nine months of the 2023 financial year. It attributed the growth to a rise in cement prices. During the period, the company sold 320,000t of cement, down by 11% from 360,000t. It produced 324,000t of cement, down by 10% from 358,000t, and 309,000t of clinker, up by 18% from 262,000t. Throughout the reporting period, Thatta Cement recorded a clinker capacity utilisation of 62%, up from 53% in the corresponding period in the 2022 financial year.

Peru: Data from Asocem, the Peruvian Cement Association, shows that national cement dispatches reached 958,000t in March 2023, a 17% decrease compared to March 2022. Asocem members made 894,000t of cement, a 20% decrease. They produced 770,000t of clinker, a fall of 18% year-on-year.

Asocem members exported 13,000t of cement, a 27% decrease compared to March 2022. They exported 36,000t of clinker, a 19% decrease. Peru imported 8000t of cement and 44,000t of clinker, year-on-year falls of 85% and 72%, respectively. Most imports came from Vietnam, Chile and South Korea.

Senegal: Cement production in Senegal by Sococim, Dangote Cement and Ciments du Sahel fell by 5.6% month-on-month in January 2023. According to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography, this drop was due to weaker exports, which fell by 7.0% month-on-month. In contrast local cement sales improved by 6.5%.

Compared to January 2022, January 2023 saw an 11.1% increase in cement production volumes. Exports rose by 58.2% year-on-year, while local sales rose by +7.5%.

Vietnam: The General Statistics Office recorded domestic cement production volumes of 27.4Mt throughout the first quarter of 2023. The figure corresponds to a drop of 9.9% year-on-year from first-quarter 2022 levels. Việt Nam News has reported that the country produced 116Mt of cement in 2022, up by 5.8% year-on-year.

Afghanistan: Ghori Cement says that its Baghlan cement plants currently produce 600t/day of cement, corresponding to annual production of 0.22Mt/yr. The producer states that production is restricted by shortages of electricity and vehicles. With regular supply of these, it would increase its production by 33% to 800t/day (0.29Mt/yr), according to the company.

Production at the Baghlan cement plants was previously suspended for four months in mid-2022 due to high coal prices. This was resolved when the government began supplying the plants with coal at a pre-agreed price. The plants then reopened with a daily production of 520t/day (0.19Mt/yr), up by 49% from 350t/yr (0.13Mt/yr).

The provincial government said that an upgrade with equipment from China and Iran since increased production by 15% to its present 600t/day (0.22Mt/yr).

Pakistan: Thatta Cement produced 211,000t of cement during the first half of 2023 financial year, up by 3.7% year-on-year from 204,000t during the first half of 2022 financial year. Its clinker production rose by 55% to 190,000t from 122,000t. The producer despatched 215,000t of cement, up by 4.7% year-on-year from 205,000t. Its despatches of clinker fell to 0t from 4990t.

Thatta Cement said "During the period under review, persistent political instability and indecisive monetary measures have left the business to face gross challenges. Recent floods brought on by extremely strong monsoon rains have damaged the national infrastructure and created a food crisis. The catastrophic flood has killed thousands of people, besides flooding one-third of the country. This has further compounded the agony of an economy which has already been struggling for its survival due to ever increasing current account deficit, sharply rising inflation rate and massive rupee devaluation."

Kyrgyzstan: Cement companies produced 2.67Mt of cement nationally in 2022, up by 7.1% year-on-year from 2021 levels, local press has reported. The Eurasian Economic Commission noted that only Armenia outstripped Kyrgyz cement production growth regionally, with an 18% rise to 1.07Mt.
