Türkiye: TSKB (Industrial Development Bank of Türkiye) has signed a €75m investment loan agreement with Oyak Cement to fund renewable energy and waste heat recovery (WHR) projects. The funding will support the construction of a 115MW solar power plant in Beypazarı, Ankara, and waste heat recovery facilities at the Ankara, Adana and Mardin cement plants.
Oyak Cement general manager Murat Sela said “We have accelerated our investments for the Beypazarı solar power plant, as well as the WHR facility investments with a total installed capacity of 13.5 MW at our Adana, Ankara and Mardin plants. We expect these investments to help generate 237,000MW/yr of energy, while increasing the total renewable energy utilisation rate at our plants from 9% to 30%.”
Votorantim Cimentos reports progress on emissions
11 April 2025Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has reported that it ended 2024 with global CO2 emissions of 550kg/t of cementitious material produced, a reduction of 28% compared to 1990, the baseline year used by the cement industry. The level reflects a 1% year-on-year decrease from 556kg/t in 2023. Votorantim Cimentos’ 2030 decarbonisation target, approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), is 475kg/t of cementitious product.
Votorantim Cimentos’ global thermal substitution rate (TSR) was 32% in 2024, an increase over 2023’s TSR of 31%. Its 2030 target is 53%. The company’s clinker factor was 72.5%, a slight fall compared to 73% in 2023. Its 2030 goal is 68%. 34% of the electricity consumed by Votorantim Cimentos in 2024 came from renewable sources, the same as in 2023. The company’s goal is to have 45% of the energy consumed globally come from renewable sources by 2030.
Álvaro Lorenz, Global Director of Sustainability, Institutional Relations, Product Development, Engineering and Energy, said “Globally, we have made progress in pilot projects for CO2 capture, installed new co-processing and renewable energy sites and systems, and launched low-carbon products. All these efforts will contribute toward our decarbonisation journey and help us achieve our goal of producing carbon-neutral concrete by 2050.”
Cherat Cement commissions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa solar plant
04 April 2025Pakistan: Cherat Cement has commissioned a 6MW solar power plant at its facility in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project forms part of a 9MW total capacity, with the remaining 3MW expected to be commissioned in the 2025 financial year. The company did not disclose its total renewable energy capacity in the notice.
Thatta Cement commissions wind project
04 April 2025Pakistan: Thatta Cement commissioned its 4.8MW wind power project at its plant in Thatta, Sindh, on 3 April 2025. The project was reportedly completed ahead of schedule and brings the producer’s total renewable energy capacity to 9.8MW.
PPC signs solar power agreement with Yellow Door Energy
26 March 2025South Africa: Cement producer PPC and independent power producer Yellow Door Energy (YDE) have signed a 24.5MWp solar power purchase agreement. The project will operate under a solar wheeling arrangement, delivering electricity from YDE’s Leeudoringstad solar park to PPC’s Slurry, Dwaalboom, De Hoek and Riebeek operations via the Eskom grid.
YDE will install over 20,000 panels, generating 57.5 million kW in the first year of operation and offsetting 59,800t of CO₂. The project includes a new 43km overhead electrical line connecting the solar park to the Eskom substation.
Arabian Cement signs 30-year solar power deal with IRSC
18 March 2025Egypt: Arabian Cement Company has signed a 30-year power purchase agreement with IRSC for renewable electricity. The deal covers the development, financing, construction, ownership and operation of the second phase of the firm’s solar power plant. The plant will have a total capacity of 17.6MW and is expected to produce 32.5GW/yr of electricity.
Cemex invests in solar power in Poland
14 March 2025Poland: Cemex has signed an agreement with EDP Energia Poland to build solar installations at several of its sites, with a total capacity of over 14MW. The investment is part of its ‘Future in Action’ strategy to combat climate change.
New solar plants will be installed at Cemex's cement plants in Chełm, Rudniki, and Gdynia, as well as its ready-mix concrete plants in Mysłowice, Warsaw Annopol, Lublin, Szczecin, and Gdańsk. The concrete plant installations will begin operating in the second quarter of 2025, while the installations at the cement plants are scheduled to start generating power in the first quarter of 2026. EDP Energia Polska will install and manage the solar installations under a 15-year agreement, supplying renewable energy to Cemex facilities.
Dalmia Cement to procure solar power in Tamil Nadu
10 March 2025India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) will procure 10MW of solar power from Kilavikulam Rajalakshmi’s captive plant in Tamil Nadu. The producer will also acquire a 35% equity share in the solar power developer.
Kilavikulam Rajalakshmi is a special purpose vehicle for the 10MW solar project. Dalmia Cement said the acquisition will increase its renewable power supply as part of its commitment to RE100 by 2030 and becoming carbon negative by 2040.
Attock Cement commissions 4.8MW wind turbine
21 January 2025Pakistan: Attock Cement has commissioned a 4.8MW wind turbine project at its Hub site, it stated in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The company says that the project aligns with its commitment to sustainable cement production and aims to reduce power costs.
Brazil: thyssenkrupp Polysius has secured a front-end engineering design contract from Circlua for the construction of the world’s largest activated clay plant, with a capacity of 0.96Mt/yr (3000t/day). The plant will be largely powered by renewable electricity, and will be located in Pará, utilising clay sourced from the Carajás iron ore complex. The clay contains up to 80% kaolinite content, and will be upcycled as supplementary cementitious material.
thyssenkrupp Polysius CEO Christian Myland said “We are honoured to partner on this landmark project. Leveraging high-quality local clay and our advanced activated clay technology, this plant will set a new benchmark for carbon-conscious cement production.”
