Competition body rejects Cemento Patriota brand registration request
16 December 2016Colombia: The Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC), Colombia's competition watchdog, has rejected a request made by Productora de Cementos to register its brand Cemento Patriota under Nice Classification. The initially approved submission was contested by Cementos Argos, according to La Republica newspaper. It argued that Cementos Patriota would infringe on its Cementos Uno A, Concretos Uno A and Agregados Uno A labels, because it reproduced the distinctive letter 'A' and number one of the accompanying graphic shared by all three brands. SIC ruled in favour of Cementos Argos, arguing that a side-by-side comparison shows visual similarities.
Holcim Lanka rebrands as Insee Cement
08 December 2016Sri Lanka: Holcim Lanka has been rebranded as Insee Cement following its acquisition by Thailand’s Siam City Cement. The company will continue to use its Sanstha and Mahaweli Marine brands of cement but it will also introduce Insee Pro, Insee Pro Plus and Insee Extra brands, according to the Daily Financial Times newspaper.
My Home Industries launches new logo
25 November 2016India: My Home Industries has launched a new logo for its flagship brand Maha Cement. “We have been around for nearly 18 years and our logo for our flagship brand Maha Cement has remained that of an old-style muscle man. But change is always required. The new logo has replaced the muscleman with a modern technician attesting for its quality,” said S Sambasiva Rao, Executive Director of My Home Industries in an interview with the New Indian Express newspaper. The joint venture between India’s My Home Group and Ireland’s CRH is expanding its business and building a 1.2Mt/yr plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.
Sarbottam launches cement brands in Nepal
15 September 2016Nepal: Sarbottam Cement, part of the Saurabh Group, has launched its Ordinary Portland Cement and Portland Slag Cement brands. The company operates a 0.4Mt/yr cement grinding plant at Ramnagar.
SCG launches Masonry Cement to Myanmar
26 August 2016Myanmar: SCG has launched Masonry Cement, its first bespoke product for the Myanmar market. The brand of cement is targeted for applications in plastering and bricklaying, according to the Myanmar Business Today newspaper.
“This Masonry Cement is specialised for the Myanmar market. Based on customers’ choices, they can use this cement or our former cement products. This new product has strength in bonding cement. Some unqualified cements provide less bonding in plastering. This new product will reduce waste and expenditure,” said Attapong Sathitmanotham, SCG’s Myanmar Country Director.
India: Dalmia Bharat Cement has launched two new cement products in Odisha. The two new products - Dhalai Special Dalmia DSP Cement and Dalmia Cement – will be made available across 650 dealers and network partners in the state. Dalmia Bharat Group CEO Mahendra Singhi said that the product launch is expected to increase sales to US$221m from US$177m in the state, according to the Press Trust of India.
Dalmia Bharat Cement, which manages OCL India in Odisha, markets cement under the brand name of Konark. It has cement plants at Rajgangpur and Kapilas in the state. The group has set a sales target of about 75,000t/month for the two newly launched brands in Odisha. Its existing sales volumes across all product lines in the state are around 250,000t/month.
India: Burnpur Cement has signed an agreement with Saurabh Ganguly as a brand ambassador for the company for three years from 11 March 2016. Ganguly was the former captain of the Indian cricket team. As the brand ambassador for the company he will endorse the product and brand of the cement producer to help increase of sales.
Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has launched a new portfolio of bagged cement for the Brazilian market. The launch follows research with construction professionals and stakeholders. The company then set up a multidisciplinary group to develop its new portfolio of bagged cement from a consumer's viewpoint.
Specific products have been developed for different types of construction work. ‘Obras Estruturais’ is intended for foundations, columns, beams and structures. ‘Todas as Obras’ is intended for plasters, subfloors and slabs. ‘Obras Básicas’ is intended for repairs and renovations without structural function. ‘Obras Especiais’ is intended for industrial use as pavers, precast and artifacts. ‘Obras Especiais em Meios Agressivos’ is intended for coastal areas, pipes and sewage treatment facilities.
“For the non-specialist consumer, buying cement will be easier, more convenient and safer. For retailers and professional workers, this will bring more confidence in their recommendations, ensuring high quality and productivity at the construction site,” said Walter Dissinger, Global CEO of Votorantim Cimentos.
Arabian Cement launches Al Nasr Cement
19 February 2016Egypt: Arabian Cement Company (ACC) has launched Al Nasr branded Ordinary Portland Cement. The new branded cement is intended to penetrate new segments of the market. It has been launched in Cairo, Giza and Qlayoubia. ACC will continue to produce Al Mosalah branded cement in the other Delta markets.
"We are extremely pleased to announce launching our new cement brand in Egypt, which reinforces our position as one of the largest cement producers in the market," said Jose Maria Magrina, ACC Chief Executive Officer.
ACC also recently announced that is has renewed its plant operation agreement with NLSupervision (NLS). The agreement commenced on 1 February 2016 and run until 31 January 2021. NLSupervision is fully owned by FLSmidth, and will be operating both production lines at ACC's plant located in Suez Governorate.
Hope Construction Materials to launch bagged cement product
11 February 2016UK: Hope Construction Materials has announced the launch of a new bagged cement product scheduled for later in 2016. The new product, called Professional Grade Cement, will be marketed in the south of England.
“Hope Works has been making cement for more than 80 years and has an outstanding reputation for consistent quality and service. We are delighted to be able to offer our product in our own branded bag to customers for the very first time,” said Hope’s Commercial Director for Cement, Gary Brennand.
The new product packaging will feature a large ram, paying homage to the company’s origin in Derbyshire, which is transparent to ensure the consistent colour of Hope cement is always clearly visible. All the bags will be plastic, weatherproof and packed to give end users confidence that they can store the bags outdoors.
Hope cement had previously been available in bags through a third party supplier. This launch marks the first time Hope cement will be on the company’s packaging. The new product follows an 18-month research and development process with consultation of merchants and professional builders.
