Nigeria: BUA Cement’s Sokoto cement plant has resumed operations following a fire that killed three workers. The Sun newspaper has reported that the fire began at a diesel storage tank depot near to the plant, where third-party contract workers were welding a diesel storage tank. The group said that it activated a swift response in order to prevent any escalation of the incident.
India: A gas pipeline explosion at JP Cement’s Naubasta cement plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district reportedly injured three workers in February 2022. India Today News has reported that the incident resulted in the hospitalisation of all three workers. 15 – 20 local people subsequently attacked the plant on 11 March 2022, where they threw sticks and stones at staff and vandalised equipment. A spokesperson for the rioters accused the company of suppressing news of the pipeline disaster.
GCC worker dies following explosion at Chihuahua cement plant
28 February 2022Mexico: GCC has reported that a worker at its Chihuahua cement has died in hospital following an explosion on 25 Feburary which injured five others. The company says that it activated all safety protocols in response to the disaster and coordinated its actions with the responding authorities. It continues to support the investigation into the cause of the blast.
The company said “Unfortunately, one of the six injured died in hospital. We are currently in contact with his family, to whom we have expressed our deepest condolences, and with the families of our other injured collaborators to make all our support and resources available to them at this difficult time.”
Breedon Group receives dangerous blasting fine
09 December 2021UK: A court has fined Breedon Group Euro350,000 for endangering workers at one of its quarries. Environmental Data Services News has reported that a blast caused a flyrock projection event as workers set off explosives at the quarry.
Japan: Taiheiyo Cement has revealed that a weakness in an evaporator tube in a fluidised bed heat exchanger in a captive power plant was the cause of an explosion that took place at its Hidaka cement plant in April 2021. It said that inspections had been carried out annually but that it was difficult to detect defects visually. The company has apologised for the incident. It says it will make changes including a review of inspection standards, including more personnel in the process, improved information sharing and starting regular training on the issue. These changes will be implemented across all of the company’s plants.
The 50,000kW circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler was supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and commissioned in 1996. It ran on coal, wood chips and refuse-derived fuel. No blame for the explosion has been attributed to the manufacturer.
The explosion took place in the evening of 27 April 2021. No major injuries were sustained. However, 40 vehicles parked outside a Pachinko gambling parlour near the plant were damaged. Scattered debris was noted nearby and ash was reported up to 5km from the cement plant.
Japan: An off-grid power system at Taiheiyo Cement’s Hidaka cement plant in Saitama prefecture exploded overnight on 27 April 2021, damaging a car in a nearby car park. Fire services quickly fought and extinguished a fire in woodland surrounding the plant. Kyodo News has reported that none of the 14 people working at the site at the time was harmed. Residents 2km away reportedly heard and felt the blast.
Bomb attack causes injury at Star Cement’s Meghalaya cement plant
14 December 2020India: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for an improvised explosive device (IED) blast which injured one person and damaged a wall and water pipes at Star Cement’s cement plant in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The Press Trust of India has reported that the attack resulted from the producer’s failure to pay protection money as a non-locally-owned business.
Saurya Cement quarry blasts injure five
04 December 2020Nepal: Four explosions at Saurya Cement’s Udayapur quarry in Province No. 1 have injured five workers. The Republica newspaper has reported that the cause was allegedly a bombing campaign by an unidentified group, which also destroyed two vehicles. Police described the conditions of the victims, who are receiving treatment in Katari Hospital, as ’normal.’ The incident follows a similar event at the Tapli rural municipality office in the district in November 2020.
Container explodes at concrete plant
10 August 2020US: A container at the Jobe Materials concrete plant in El Paso, Texas exploded early on 9 August 2020, causing damage to communication wires at the plant. KVIA News has reported that there were no injuries, nor any damage to buildings, resulting from the explosion. Fire services are investigating the incident.
Death from quarry blast at cement plant in Laos
07 October 2019Laos: An explosion at a quarry related to a cement plant near Phonemany village, Nam Bak district in Luang Prabang province has killed one person and injured over 20. The nearby village was affected by the blast causing damage to houses and vehicles, according to Radio Free Asia. A villager alleged that the Chinese-owned plant never warned locals of the blasting schedule and that the explosion was larger than usual. Khammany Inthirath, Minister of Energy and Mines, said that the government had sent a team to investigate what happened.
