Vietnam: The Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) exported the majority of its cement sales in the first half of 2018. The government-owned cement producer’s sales rose by 10.1% to 14.2Mt, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. However, 11.7Mt of this figure was exported. The company’s cement and clinker production rose by 8.5% to 10.2Mt and 6.4% to 11.6Mt respectively.
Former Vicem head removed from government committees
12 July 2018Vietnam: Tran Viet Thang, the former General Director of the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem), has been dismissed as a member of the Executive Committee of the Central Businesses Party Unit and member of the Executive Committee of Vicem's Party unit. He has been found guilty of several legal violations as well as breaking Communist Party of Vietnam rules, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper.
Thang was appointed as the head of government-owned Vicem in mid-2013. He is accused of raising company debts of US$175m by the end of 2016. He left the position in mid-2017. According to the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Thang signed documents and took decisions that he was not authorised to. His actions allegedly violated local corporate and bidding law, as well as rules for Communist Party members. He has been accused of damaging the reputation of Vicem and the Communist Party.
The punishment against Thang is part of an on-going crackdown in the country against corruption.
Vietnam: The Ministry of Industry and Trade has proposed that the government transfers the management of Quang Son cement plant to the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) from the Vietnam Industrial Construction Corporation (Vinaincon) due to high losses and mounting loans. Both companies are run by the government, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. The loans have grown to 95% of the total investment of US$153m of the project, putting financial pressure on Vinaincon.
Under the proposal, Vicem will have to take care of all the loans taken by Vinaincon for Quang Son cement plant, formerly known as Thai Nguyen cement plant. The project started commercial operation in July 2011 with a production capacity of 1.5Mt/yr of cement.
Vicem sells 9.2Mt in first four months of 2018
24 May 2018Vietnam: State-owned Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem), the country’s leading cement producer, sold 9.2Mt of cement and clinker in the first four months of 2018, a 6.7% year-on-year rise from the same period in 2017. The corporation’s clinker and cement output also increased by 5% and 1.5% to 6.49Mt and 7.24Mt, respectively. Vicem aims to produce 1.8Mt of clinker and 2.5Mt of cement in May 2018. Its cement and clinker sales are expected to reach 2.7Mt in May 2018.
Vicem sold about 26.6Mt of cement and clinker in 2017, a rise of 3% year-on-year. 23.6Mt was sold locally, a 4% rise, and 3Mt was exported, a fall of 3%.
Government asks VICEM to improve operations
05 April 2018Vietnam: Mai Tien Dung, the Minister and Head of the Government Office, has identified ways for the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM) to improve its operations. The measures were drawn up at a meeting with the cement producer, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. The minister wanted ways to increase Vicem’s local market share, improve corporate governance, streamline its organisational structure, make environmental improvements and increase the quality and competitiveness of its products. He also emphasised the need for the company to coordinate with the transport sector to reduce its logistics costs.
Vicem Hoang Thach Cement orders mill from Loesche
28 February 2018Vietnam: Vicem (Vietnam Cement Corporation) Hoang Thach Cement has ordered a type LM 59.3+3 CS vertical roller mill for the Hoang Thach cement plant in Hai Duong province. The mill has a transmission power of 6200kW and it is able to grind 250t/hr of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to a fineness of 3600 Blaine. Commissioning is scheduled for later in 2018.
The scope of supply also includes an external reject system, dedusting equipment, a material conveying system and multi-chamber silos with two packaging systems downstream. The system is equipped with a LOMA LF20 heater run on heavy oil, which produces around 30,000Nm3/hr of hot gas at a temperature of 450°C. In addition, Loesche is supplying the equipment for the power supply and distribution and the grinding plant control. A particular challenge of the project has been supplying new equipment for an existing plant with limited space.
Vicem’s sales rise by 3% to 26.6Mt in 2017
10 January 2018Vietnam: The Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation’s (Vicem) cement sales rose by 3% year-on-year to 26.6Mt in 2017. 23.6Mt of cement and clinker were sold locally and 3Mt were exported, a drop of 3%, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. In 2018 the state-owned cement producer plans to produce 19.7Mt of clinker, a rise of 2%, and to sell over 28Mt of cement and clinker, a rise of 4%. The company intends to focus on ‘high-efficiency’ products to reach this target.
Vicem appoints Bui Hong Minh as general director
06 September 2017Vietnam: The Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) has appointed Bui Hong Minh as its general director. He was previously the deputy general director of the company, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. He replaces Tran Viet Thang who has been relieved from the role following allegations of business malpractice.
Minh, aged 46 years, has held the position of deputy general director at Vicem since 2013. Prior to that, he worked at the But Son and Ha Tien cement companies.
Vietnam: Bim Son Cement has ordered a vertical roller mill to grind clinker and slag from Loesche for its 4Mt/yr plant in Thanh Hóa province. The new mill will have a throughput of 250t/hr and be able to grind input materials into Ordinary Portland Cement PCB 40. The order also includes a silo, blower, filter and a packing plant. The new mill is scheduled for commissioning in August 2017. No value for the order has been disclosed.
The subsidiary of Vietnam National Cement Corporation (VICEM) previously commissioned a mill from Loesche in 2000. This was followed by a raw mill and a coal mill in 2006.
Vietnamese cement industry blames taxes for rising export prices
23 February 2017Vietnam: Tran Viet Thang, General Director of the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM), has blamed local taxes for increasing the cost of exports from the country. He blamed a government decision to exempt exported cement products from input value-added tax and a 5% export tax, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. He also said that increasing input material costs and fluctuating foreign exchange rates had caused problems for exporters. Nguyen Quang Cung, Chairman of Vietnam Cement Association, added that cement export volumes had fallen by 5.9% year-on-year in 2016.
Vietnam has set an annual export target of 20 – 35% of the country’s total cement and clinker capacity by the year of 2030. Vietnam’s cement output is expected to reach 120 – 130Mt/yr by 2020 but local consumption is only expected to reach 93Mt/yr, leaving a significant excess.
