Holcim Nederland Bouwmaterialen receives certification from Concrete Sustainability Council
16 July 2019Netherlands: Holcim Nederland Bouwmaterialen has recevied certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) for its five concrete plants. The certification process was handled by Kiwa Netherlands.
LafargeHolcim to buy Somanco in Romania
15 July 2019Romania: LafargeHolcim has signed an agreement with Oresa to buy Somaco, precast concrete producers. The transaction will allow LafargeHolcim to develop its position on the Romanian building materials market, where the company is already present in the cement, ready-mix concrete and aggregates segments. No value for the transaction has been disclosed. It is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in late 2019.
“This is our sixth bolt-on acquisition this year and we are delivering on our commitment to further develop our Solutions & Products business segment as part of Strategy 2022 – ‘Building for Growth.’ The acquisition enables LafargeHolcim to enter Romania’s fast growing precast concrete market and to become an integrated solutions provider for our local customers,” said Jan Jenisch, chief executive officer (CEO) of LafargeHolcim.
Somaco operates five precast concrete plants and one plant for aerated blocks in Romania. The company reported net sales of Euro56m in 2018 and has 750 employees. It has a portfolio of precast products for bridges, tunnels, subways and logistics platforms and supplies products for the residential sector.
France: Lafarge France has launched its Lafarge 360 initiative. The scheme aims to aid specifiers, contractors and builders make low-carbon structures through reducing CO2 emissions, preserving natural resources and responsible innovation. It will start the initiative by proving a Lafarge 360 score on its associated digital platform to allow customers to assess the environmental impact of Lafarge’s products. By providing a rating of A to D the tool will offer information on the concrete types.
US: Hawaii’s Department of Transportation plans to use carbon-injected concrete for its new projects. This will include a new structure to protect a highway tunnel from rockfalls, according to Reuters. The Department of Transportation was testing CO2-injected concrete on an access road project with CarbonCure Technologies in May 2019. The latest decision follows a resolution by state legislators that city administrators ‘consider’ using CO2-injected concrete in city and county infrastructure where concrete is used.
In late June 2019 CarbonCure announced that its had formed a partnership with HC&D Ready Mix, a local concrete producer, to use its CO2-injected concrete process. It is the second deal with a concrete producer in the state that CarbonCure has arranged.
India: Ambuja Cement is looking for ready-mix concrete (RMX) and aggregate assets to buy as part of its growth plans. A company source quoted by the Business Standard newspaper said that it was considering ‘growth options’ in all of its core businesses of cement, RMX and aggregates. Industry analysts have interpreted this as an effort to diversify the business away from dominance by the cement sector. However, expansion in the RMX market is expected to be difficult owing to the lack of local organisation in the market.
The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim has a cement production capacity of 63Mt/yr, including those of ACC. Both Ambuja Cement and ACC use a master supply agreement to coordinate sales, marketing and logistics.
Italy: Buzzi Unicem says that its Unical subsidiary is the first national concrete producer to earn silver level RSS certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council. The accreditation asserts that a company meets criteria for sustainable practices and operates in a sustainable, environmentally positive manner. Unical’s Strada Berlia concrete batching plant in Turin received the certification in June 2019. The CSC procedure also included certifying the cement produced by Buzzi Unicem’s Robilante Cement plant and the aggregates from Ceretto quarry. The certificate was issued by ICMQ, the Italian Certification Body member of CSC. Unical manages more than 100 concrete plants in Italy.
Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies signs deal with Bouygues Construction to develop low carbon concrete
05 July 2019France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies and Bouygues Construction have signed a 30-month initial technical and commercial collaboration agreement to develop and test concrete formulations using new cement made from Hoffmann’s H-EVA technology. Hoffmann Green Cement inaugurated its pilot plant at Bournezeau, Vendée in late 2018. The unit will manufacture cement products using flash-calcined metakaolin and blast-furnace slag. Bouygues Construction is a global construction company with a presence in over 60 countries.
US: Researchers from CalPortland have published a peer-reviewed study looking at the absorption or carbonation of CO2 by buildings, pavements and structures made from concrete. The authors argue that this negative effect on CO2 emissions is not being considered in global, national and regional greenhouse gas accounting methods. The paper calls for focused studies on CO2 uptake in concrete within the context of its overall Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
“It is time to further examine the value of concrete in the built environment as a significant carbon sink,” said Allen Hamblen, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of CalPortland. “To do so accurately, we must specifically look at the net effects of CO2 sequestration in concrete and evaluate all structures over their lifetime within a circular economy.”
The study looks at previous attempts to quantify the effect of concrete carbonation, notably using work by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (SERI) that examined data from several European countries to develop practical models to gauge the extent of CO2 uptake by concrete globally in the built environment. Different models estimated that 15 - 20% of CO2 emissions from clinker production were reabsorbed over the lifetime of concrete structures.
France: HeidelbergCement France has finalised the acquisition of Cemex’s Centre region aggregates and ready-mixed concrete businesses. The acquisition includes seven aggregate quarries and 28 ready-mixed concrete plants. The acquired aggregates reserves and resources amount to about 25Mt. HeidelbergCement France will fully integrate the operations into its own network.
“With this acquisition, we strengthen our vertically integrated market position in central France,” said Bernd Scheifele, chairman of the managing board of HeidelbergCement. “The operations fit very well into our existing network of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete plants in the Paris region, and we expect significant synergies.”
UK: Hanson has been part of a new continuous concrete pour record in the UK as part of its work at the EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C (HPC) new nuclear power station in Somerset. It supplied raw materials for the concrete to main civil engineering contractor BYLOR, which operates the on-site concrete production plant. The 9000m3, five-day, pour was to construct the last of five reinforced concrete segments that make up the cross-shaped foundations on which all of the first nuclear reactor’s buildings will sit. The record-breaking pour beats the previous UK record set by the Shard skyscraper in London.
The completion of the foundation platform, which is up to 4m thick, represents a significant milestone for the project, described by EDF Energy as J-zero. It marks the transition from below ground activity to the construction of permanent reactor buildings above ground.
Hanson says that mix design for HPC took three years of development and testing to ensure that the concrete was of the required quality mandated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. The subsidiary of Germany’s HeidelbergCement has 65 employees directly involved in the HPC project team. To date Hanson has supplied 51,000m3 of concrete, 2.5Mt of aggregates, 210,000t of marine sand, 65,000t of cement; 105,000t of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and 125,000t of asphalt.
