Power Cement secures coal supply for Nooriabad cement plant
26 January 2023Pakistan: Power Cement has awarded a coal supply contract to Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) on a trial basis. The Dawn newspaper has reported that SECM's locally sourced coal may subsequently replace imported coal in cement production at Power Cement's Nooriabad cement plant in Sindh.
SECMC produces 3.8Mt/yr of coal from the Thar coalfield. It has an extraction capacity of 7.6Mt/yr, which it plans to increase by 61% to 12.2Mt/yr with a new expansion phase by June 2023. SECMC said that this will lower the price of its coal by 36% to US$27/t from US$42/t. Currently, only Afghanistan is exporting coal to Pakistan, at a price of US$166/t.
Thar coal has a relatively low heating value, including by comparison to Pakistani coal from the western provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
India: UltraTech Cement recorded sales of US$1.91bn during the third quarter of the 2023 Indian financial year, up by 20% year-on-year from third-quarter 2022 financial year levels. The Aditya Birla subsidiary's cement sales during the quarter grew by 13% year-on-year in volume. It recorded 24% growth in costs, to US$1.74bn, while its profit fell by 38% to US$131m.
UltraTech Cement noted growth in the cost of electricity, fuels and raw materials.
Cementos Artigas commissions Minas integrated cement plant
20 January 2023Uruguay: Cementos Artigas has successfully commissioned its upgraded Minas integrated cement plant. The new plant consolidates the operations of the former 350,000t/yr Minas clinker plant and the 500,000t/yr Sayago grinding plant. Crónica Global News has reported that the project consisted of the construction of a new vertical roller mill and storage facilities at the Minas site. The work lasted 18 months and cost US$40m.
Cementos Artigas says that the Minas integrated cement plant will increase the efficiency and reduce the electricity and transport costs of its operations.
China Shanshui Cement’s profit drops by over 70% in 2022
17 January 2023China: China Shanshui Cement recorded a 70% year-on-year drop in its profit throughout 2022. Reuters has reported that the decline is the outcome of a rise in costs for the producer.
China Resources Cement's profit plummets in 2022
13 January 2023China: China Resources Cement (CRC) recorded a 74 - 78% year-on-year net profit drop in 2022. As such, its full-year net profit was US$255 - 302m. Reuters has reported that the group attributed the drop to subdued demand from construction, increased production costs and low cement and clinker prices in the regions where it operates.
Despite the slow situation in the construction market, CRC's property development arm recorded a rise in its rental income throughout 2022.
Himachal Pradesh government holds talks over Gagal and Darlaghat cement plant closures
12 January 2023India: Representatives of Adani Group and cement truck drivers' unions attended talks held by the Himachal Pradesh state government, after the group closed two cement plants in the state, claiming that their costs were prohibitively high. The government appointed Himachal Consultancy Organisation to guide truck unions in reaching an agreement on new freight rates. Adani Group chair Gautam Adani said that transport costs per tonne of cement were US$1.30/km in upland areas and US$0.66/km in lowland areas. The state government previously raised value added tax (VAT) rates on diesel by 68% to US$0.09/l, resulting in total diesel costs of US$1.05/l.
BBMG's profit drops in 2022 amid low cement sales drop
10 January 2023China: BBMG recorded a 52-59% year-on-year drop in its net profit to US$177 - 207m, Reuters has reported. The producer attributed the decline to a drop in cement sales, alongside a rise in the cost of raw materials.
Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers celebrates 75 years of Dominican cement production
10 January 2023Dominican Republic: The Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (ADOCEM) has declared 2023 a year of strength in the cement industry, as it celebrates the 75-year anniversary of the start of cement production in the country. CNIN News has reported that the Dominican Republic's cement industry contributed US$764m/yr to the national economy, 0.8% of gross domestic product (GDP).
ADOCEM president Félix González said “The cement industry has contributed decisively to our national stability, not only through quality jobs and contributions to the treasury, but also by successfully meeting local demand and contributing to international exports, despite cost-related challenges."
Vicem's full-year sales grow in 2022
09 January 2023Vietnam: Vicem recorded full-year sales of US$1.68bn during 2022, up by 17% year-on-year. The producer sold 27.5Mt of cement, down by 6.7% year-on-year. Export sales volumes declined more sharply than those on the domestic market. Vicem responded to the cost impacts of economic disruptions arising from the on-going Russian invasion of Ukraine by raising its cement prices. Nonetheless, its profit fell by 30% year-on-year to US$63.9m.
Vietnam News Summary has reported that Vicem is aiming to achieve sales growth of 4% year-on-year in 2023, to US$1.74bn. Export sales growth prospects are strong, since China resumed its import of foreign goods at the end of December 2022. China consumed 54% of all Vietnamese cement exports in 2021.
Holcim Philippines implements 70 automation projects during 2022
09 January 2023Philippines: Holcim Philippines carried out 70 upgrades aimed at increasing automation in its operations during 2022. The projects aim to optimise cement production, generate cost savings and ensure best safety practices. The Manila Times has reported that new Industry 4.0 initiatives include equipment monitoring systems offering 90-day performance projections, software capable of predicting cement's strength development and drones to replace visual inspections in remote spaces.
Holcim Philippines said that it is currently exploring the use of new predictive technologies in its operations.
