World: FCT Combustion has released details on new burner projects it is involved with. Selected projects include a new contract in the US to convert both kilns to natural gas firing at Ash Grove Cement’s Louisville plant in Nebraska. The order includes Gyro-Therm MKII Burners, Natural Valve Trains and NFPA 86 BMS for both kilns.

Nova Cimangola in Angola has contracted FCT to convert its 5000t/day kiln to fuel oil firing. The order includes a multi fuel main burner, calciner burners, oil heating units, oil pumping and filtering units and control panels.

FCT also provided details about a low NO_x kiln conversion for an undisclosed client. Other selected cement sector projects include the commissioning of Turbu-Flex burner systems for clinker kilns at Finnsementti’s Parainen and Lappeenranta plants in Finland. These are scheduled for commissioning in March 2019 and April 2019 respectively. Baumit’s Wopfing plant in Austria is due for a natural has lance for kiln preheating to be delivered later in March 2019.

It also plans to deliver a Turbu-Flex burner system for a clinker kiln to an undisclosed client in China later in March 2019. It is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study undertaken by FCT is to allow for the firing of natural gas and to modernise the plant. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2019.

China: West China Cement’s sales revenue rose by 24% year-on-year to US$881m in 2018 from US$709m in 2017. Its cement sales volumes fell by 3.2% to 18.1Mt from 18.7Mt. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 40.6% to US$393m from US$279m. Despite falling sales volumes, the cement producer said that increased prices boosted its margins.

By region the company said that sales volumes in Shaanxi Province remained stable, while the continuous low demand in the Xi’an Metropolitan Area and Central Shaanxi region led to occasional peak-shifting production halts by all producers during low season periods. Sales volume in Xinjiang Province remained low, while that of Guizhou Province were stable.

China: Tianrui Cement sales revenue rose by 19.5% year-on-year to US$1.5bn in 2018 from US$1.25bn in 2017. It attributed the growth to a 15% increase in the price of cement. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 15.3% to US$573m from US$497m. Its sales volumes of cement remained stable at 29.4Mt compared to 29.3Mt in 2017.

Panama: The Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) is planning to introduce regulations testing cement imports for Hexavalent chromium (chromium VI). Edgar Arias, Director of Standards and Industrial Technology of the MICI, said at a trade forum that the new rules had been agreed, according to La Estrella de Panamá newspaper. At present cement is tested at the discretion of the importer. Under the new regulations cement will be tested before it leaves its country of origin, when it arrives in Panama and for a third time at the point of sale at the discretion of the authorities.

Panama imports 10,000 – 20,000t/month of cement from countries including China, Turkey and Vietnam. Around 20 importers handle the market. Import tax on cement ranges from 10 – 20% depending on the point of origin.

China: Starlinger Plastics Machinery Taicang, the Chinese branch of Austria’s Starlinger, has reached the milestone of building 10,000 circular looms. It reached this target in November 2018. The plant was established in 2005 and started manufacturing looms in 2006. It produces around 1000 looms/yr. Omega 6 and Omega 1000 model looms were first produced at Starlinger Taicang. This was then followed by the RX series, which is produced exclusively in China.

China: China Resources Cement’s turnover rose by 29.5% year-on-year to US$4.94bn in 2018 from US$3.82bn in 2017. Its profit jumped to US$1.02bn from US$0.46bn. Its cement sales volumes grew by 9% to 82.6Mt from 75.9Mt. Cement sales volumes grew in all regions except for Hainan and Yunnan, where they declined slightly. Its concrete sales volumes increased by 5.7% to 14.2Mm³ from 13.5Mm³. No reason for its growth in 2018 was given but the producer’s average sales price of cement grew by 25%.

The cement producer is upgrading 106 cement bagging machines in the reporting year as part of its ‘digital’ cement-bagging project. It completed the construction of three sets of wet-process desulphurisation systems and 11 sets of composite desulphurisation systems. It launched co-processing projects in Changjiang County in Hainan, Tianyang County in Guangxi, Midu County in Yunnan and Fengqing County in Yunna.

China: Anhui Conch’s Jining Conch subsidiary has signed a contract worth US$23m with Conch Design Institute for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units. Conch Design Institute will supply SCR denitration technology to Jining Conch including engineering design, equipment supply, construction and installation, engineering supervision and project management. The project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2019.

Vietnam: The Ministry of Construction says that demand for cement and clinker is expected to increase slightly to up to 99Mt in 2019. This will consist of 70Mt locally and 29Mt of exports, according to the Vietnam News Agency. Demand grew by 19% year-on-year to 96.7Mt in 2018, with growth driven by a 55% rise in exports to 31.6Mt. It shipped 9.8Mt to China in 2018. The main export markets in 2019 are expected to be the Philippines, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan and Peru.

South Africa: The Concrete Institute says that the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) should impose a temporary ban on cement imports to protect the local industry. The institute is preparing an application to the commission, according to the Business Daily newspaper. Bryan Perrie, its managing director, said that imports from Pakistan dropped in 2016 after tariffs were introduced. However, this has been replaced by imports from China and Vietnam. He added that prices have dropped ‘drastically,’ especially in coastal areas, that this is starting to effect jobs and cement producers are delaying expansion plans. The Concrete Institute represents PPC, AfriSam, Lafarge Africa, Sephaku and Natal Portland Cement.

China: Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries has delivered two 220t/hr CK Mills to Jiande Conch Cement via Anhui Conch Kawasaki Energy Conservation Equipment Manufacturing (CKM), a joint venture between Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Anhui Conch. Kawasaki is handling design and operation-related technical guidance, whereas CKM is in charge of manufacturing and delivery. The mills have a table track diameter of 4900mm, 5100kW motors and four rollers. No value for the order has been disclosed.
