Votorantim Cimentos raises prices but earnings fall so far in 2022

11 November 2022

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos’ net revenue grew by 18% year-on-year to US$3.60bn in the first nine months of 2022 from US$3.04bn in the same period in 2021. Its cement sales volumes rose slightly to 27.8Mt. However, its adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell by 16% to US$659m from US$780m.

Domestically the group said that its revenue grew because price rises counteracted falling sales volumes of cement. Outside of Brazil it reported growing revenue, apart from in its Latin American business. Here it blamed the fall on a new competitor entering the Uruguayan market and market issues in Bolivia. Earnings were noted to have decreased in every region mainly due to mounting fuel, raw material and energy costs.

Votorantim launched a new logo in October 2022 and completed its acquisition of Heidelberg Materials' Southern Spanish businesses in November 2022. The purchase included an integrated cement plant located in Málaga, three aggregates quarries and 11 ready-mix concrete plants in the Andalusia region.

Cementos Molins increases sales, earnings and profit in first nine months of 2022

27 October 2022

Spain: Cementos Molins' consolidated sales were Euro959m over the first nine months of 2022, up by 37% year-on-year from the same period in 2021. Cementos Molins attributed the growth to an increase in sales across all of its businesses and the 'significant' contribution of new acquisitions from 2021. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 11% to Euro208m, while its net profit rose by 3% to Euro90m. The group noted a 'strong performance' by its South American and Asian business. In general, it faced high costs growth, offset partly by increased product prices and the effects of its successful operational efficiency plans. Costs rose especially sharply in Spain, leading to margins deterioration there, while the impacts of hyperinflation in Argentina were lower than in the corresponding period of 2019.

Cementos Molins' net debt continued to decline throughout the period, to reach Euro137m, 0.5x its EBITDA. The group said that its financial position will give it leverage in its execution of new growth opportunities and its 2030 sustainability roadmap.

Regarding the company's third-quarter 2022 performance, chief executive officer Julio Rodríguez said "Despite a very challenging and uncertain global environment and the negative impact of high inflation costs, once again Cementos Molins has delivered very solid results in the third quarter. This performance is the outcome of the contribution of a very professional and committed team worldwide, whom I would like to thank for their big effort in such a difficult environment."

Oficemen blames high electricity price for falling cement exports from Spain

20 September 2022

Spain: Oficemen has blamed falling exports of cement on high electricity prices. The cement association reports that exports fell by around 25% year-on-year to 3.76Mt for the first eight months of 2022 from over 5Mt in the same period in 2021. Local consumption of cement slowed to an increase of just 0.2% to 9.88Mt from 9.86Mt.

Aniceto Zaragoza, the general director of Oficemen, said “Electricity costs in our sector have increased by 400% in the last two years, a situation that worsens every day due to the energy crisis we are suffering. Without competitive electricity costs, it is impossible for our industry, which for many years has led the cement export market, to continue competing with other producers in the Mediterranean area that pay much less for their energy inputs, such as Algeria, Turkey or Egypt.”
