UltraTech Cement secures US$500m sustainability-linked loan

India: UltraTech Cement has obtained a $500m sustainability-linked loan from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, State Bank of India, BNP Paribas and other lenders. Capital Market News has reported that the conditions for the loan align with UltraTech's 2050 Net-Zero Roadmap. Under the roadmap, the subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group aims to reduce its Scope 1 CO2 emissions per tonne of cementitious material by 27% between 2017 and 2032, and to raise its reliance on renewables to 85% of its energy consumption by 2030.

UltraTech Cement previously issued sustainability-linked bonds in 2021.

JSW Cement takes US$50m sustainability-linked loan

India: JSW Cement has signed a US$50m sustainability-linked loan agreement with BNP Paribas Singapore. The Hindu BusinessLine newspaper has reported that the producer plans to use the funds for capital expenditure projects aimed to more than double its production capacity to 50Mt/yr from 17Mt/yr. Current plans include US$388m in investments in the construction of a 2.5Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Madhya Pradesh and a 2.5Mt/yr grinding plant in Uttar Pradesh.

The latest loan from BNP Paribas is the second of its kind taken by the group, following a US$48.5m sustainability-linked loan from Japan-based MUFG Bank in October 2022.

Argos USA obtains loan

15 September 2022

US: Argos USA has obtained a US$750m loan for the financing of its working capital and capital expenditure and refinancing of its debt. The loan is linked to environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics. Bank of Nova Scotia, BNP Paribas, JP Morgan Chase Bank, SMBC and Bank of New York Mellon lent the funds, assisted by Cuatrecasas.

Parent company Cementos Argos said "With this credit agreement, around 44% of Cementos Argos' consolidated debt will be linked to ESG indicators, bringing it closer to the 50% target for 2022 previously announced to the market, and thus reaffirming the company's commitment to meeting ambitious goals in terms of sustainable growth."

Adani Group raises US$5.25bn for Holcim India acquisition

India: Adani Group has secured US$5.25bn-worth of bank loans from Barclays, BNP Paribas and Citigroup for its acquisition of Holcim’s Indian cement businesses ACC and Ambuja Cements. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that the group plans to expand its cement capacity by 43% to 100Mt/yr from 70Mt/yr.

Argos North America takes out US$300m loan linked to gender quality and CO2 emission performance

Colombia: Argos North America has taken out a US$300m loan where the interest rate is linked to CO2 emission reduction indicators and the increase in the percentage of women in leadership positions. It will be used to prepay an existing syndicated loan. The loan has been taken out from BNP Paribas Securities, Natixis, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and the Bank of Nova Scotia. This loan is the first linked to environmental, social and corporate governance performance that Argos has signed with international banks.
