Cem'In'Eu launches FUSIOCIM 43% reduced-CO2 cement
13 July 2023France: Cem'In'Eu has launched FUSIOCIM, a CEM II/C pozzolan cement, that offers a 43% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). FUSIOCIM has specific CO2 emissions of 506kg/t. It is suitable for various concrete applications and comes in 25kg bags.
Cem’In’Eu general manager Fabien Charbonnel said "We created Cem’In’Eu with the ambition of reducing the carbon footprint of the cement industry. And we are proving it today with a low-carbon offer that easily replaces traditional cements, without any change for construction professionals. We are convinced that this transition can only be done with pragmatism and taking into account the needs of users.”
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to support Hallett Group’s Green Cement Transformation project
12 July 2023Australia: Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hallett Group and renewable energy consultancy Elecseed. Business Korea Daily News has reported that the signatories will collaborate on Hallett Group’s Green Cement Transformation project. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 300,000t/yr, and eventually by 1Mt/yr, by producing reduced-CO2 cement from three industrial waste streams. It will also use green hydrogen. The US$83.6m project has US$13m-worth of funding from the government.
Additionally, the partners say that they will seek to foster a ‘globally competitive hydrogen export industry.’
Capsol Technologies to run carbon capture feasibility study at cement plant in Northern Europe
12 July 2023Norway: Capsol Technologies has been awarded a feasibility study for the CapsolEoP (end-of-pipe) carbon capture product at an unnamed cement plant in Northern Europe. The study is for a plant aiming to capture more than 1Mt/yr of CO2. The award is Capsol Technologies’ first paid engineering study on a cement plant. The company says it is seeing an increasing amount of request and sales engineering work in the cement sector and it expects more engineering studies to be awarded going forward.
Jan Kielland, the chief executive officer of Capsol Technologies, said “The fact that the CapsolEoP carbon capture technology is easy to integrate without disrupting the operations of the host plant is an attractive value proposition to these types of facilities. In addition, the emission from a cement plant has a high concentration of CO2 making it especially beneficial for the CapsolEoP technology relative to competing technologies, bringing down the cost per unit CO2 captured.”
Norway-based Capsol Technologies is promoting a solvent/scrubbing-based approach to carbon capture using hot potassium carbonate (HPC). It was awarded a technology licensing agreement for the Stockholm Exergi BEECS (Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage) project in July 2022. It has also received orders for its CapsolGo carbon capture demonstration unit in Sweden and Germany.
GO CO2 carbon capture and storage project launched
11 July 2023France: Heidelberg Materials, Lafarge France, Lhoist and utilities provider TotalEnergies launched the GO CO2 carbon capture and storage project at the port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire on 10 July 2023. The Le Marin newspaper has reported that the Euro1.7bn project will treat and liquefy captured CO2 for underwater storage. The initial participating plants will be Lafarge France’s Saint-Pierre-la-Cour cement plant and Lhoist’s Neau lime plant.
Preliminary studies will commence later in 2023, with an investment decision to be taken in 2027, for commissioning of the project in 2030. The consortium will initially process 2.6Mt/yr of captured CO2, rising to 4Mt/yr in 2050.
Fortera continues construction of low-carbon cementitious material plant at CalPortland's Redding cement plant
10 July 2023US: In 2022, Fortera began building a 15,000t/yr-capacity plant to produce its low-carbon cementitious material, Fortera Reactive Calcium Carbonate (RCC), at CalPortland's Redding cement plant in California. The commercial-scale plant will produce a reactive form of calcium carbonate using CO2 from the kiln of the 600,000t/yr cement plant. Fortera's process converts 1t of limestone into 1t of Fortera RCC by capturing and mineralising CO2 from the cement plant's kiln. Fortera cement production emits 60% less CO2 than ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The 15,000t/yr plant will operate at 20 times the scale of previous pilot tests. The Redding Record newspaper has reported that 15 workers will be employed at the site.
Former Redding cement plant owner Lehigh Hanson formed an agreement with Fortera to collaborate on the low-carbon cement plant project in March 2021. The plant subsequently switched ownership to Martin Marietta Materials in October 2021, before CalPortland bought it in July 2022.
Argentina: Cementos Avellaneda has inaugurated its 22MW La Calera solar power plant in San Luis Province. Forbes has reported that the power plant will supply electricity to the producer's 1.1Mt/yr San Luis cement plant. As a result, operations at the plant will henceforth be 55% renewably powered. In total, the new solar power plant will eliminate 22,600t/yr-worth of CO2 emissions. Engineering company Industrias Juan F Secco supported the installation of the US$25m plant, which took 16 months to build.
Cementos Avellaneda's general director José Luis Maestri said "It was key to the success of this project to have been able to find a strategic partner such as Industrias Juan F Secco, an Argentine company with more than 80 years of history and experience in the energy sector, which provided us with all its professionalism and commitment."
Spain: Cementos El Molino plans to invest Euro3.7m in an upgrade to energy infrastructure at its 450,000t Santa Eulalia grinding plant in Aragon. Alimarket Construction News has reported that the upgrade consists of a 12MW substation and a 2.4MW solar power plant. Euro2m-worth (54%) of investments will go towards construction of the subsystem and Euro1.7m (46%) towards the solar power plant. Cementos El Molino expects to carry out the investments before the end of 2023.
Lafarge Emirates Cement hires Turboden for Fujairah cement plant waste heat recovery plant
07 July 2023UAE: Lafarge Emirates Cement, part of Holcim, has awarded a contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group subsidiary Turboden to supply and install a 10MW waste heat recovery (WHR) system at its Fujairah cement plant. The system relies on ENGIE Solutions' organic Rankine cycle technology. The supplier says that the installation will reduce the 3.2Mt/yr cement plant's energy-related CO2 emissions by 29,000t/yr (28%).
Turboden CEO Paolo Bertuzzi said "We are proud that Holcim Group, already our customer for three other WHR plants, has again chosen Turboden for this first project in the UAE. At COP 28, this year in the UAE, we will have the opportunity to present this energy-saving and CO2-reducing project to raise awareness in energy intensive industries."
United Cement Group implements environmental social governance standards in Uzbek cement operations
07 July 2023Uzbekistan: United Cement Group (UCG) has implemented environmental social governance (ESG) standards across its Uzbek cement operations. The new standards establish transparency on the company's legal compliance, working conditions and impacts on all stakeholders.
Business World Magazine has reported that general director Serik Ukanov said "Control of emissions of harmful substances and compliance with ESG norms is carried out by each enterprise under the supervision of the holding company. Each factory of the holding has a separate 'Targets' department, which is responsible for operations, repair and maintenance, as well as the adjustment of all the dedusting installations of raw materials and grinding mills and rotary kilns. We produce monthly and quarterly emissions reports and keep statistics on the carbon footprint per tonne of cement." He continued "UCG's next big step is a multi-phase project to reduce this carbon footprint. A contract was signed with KHD Humboldt Wedag to renovate two rotary kilns."
UCG subsidiary Qizilqumsement said that it was carrying out testing at its Qizilqum cement plant in partnership with Germany-based KHD Humboldt Wedag in May 2023. The company is in the process of expanding the plant's integrated capacity by 1.8Mt/yr through the construction of its upcoming Line 4.
Asia Cement presents 2050 net zero strategy
06 July 2023China: Asia Cement has launched its 2050 decarbonisation strategy, entitled 'Net-Zero Carbon Emissions By 2050 - Asia Cement Advanced Deployment.' The strategy consists of multiple pillars, namely 'alternative fuels,' 'reducing cement's clinker factor,' 'increasing renewable energy reliance' and 'carbon capture.'
During 2022, Asia Cement reduced its limestone, clay, iron and sand consumption by 266,000t, its coal consumption by 17,000t and its gypsum consumption by 56,000t year-on-year. This eliminated 95,100t of CO2 emissions throughout the year, according to the producer.
