CarbonCure Technologies announces milestone in decarbonisation efforts

25 October 2024

Canada: Climate technology company CarbonCure Technologies has announced that it has ‘saved’ over 500,000t of CO₂ across 7.5m truckloads of concrete. CarbonCure uses a technology that injects captured CO₂ into fresh concrete, which is mineralised and permanently stored, and which enables concrete producers to reduce cement usage while maintaining strength. The solution integrates into existing concrete plant operations, allowing for both environmental benefits via a reduced CO₂ footprint and cost savings through reduced cement consumption, according to the company. The company also claims that for every 1t of CO2 that is mineralised in ready mix concrete, another 50t of CO₂ is ‘avoided’ by reducing emissions from cement adjustments.

CEO of CarbonCure Technologies Rob Niven said “This milestone reflects the strong sustainability leadership of CarbonCure’s innovative concrete producer partners. Together, we are proving that reducing the carbon footprint of concrete is not just a goal for the future — it can happen, and it is happening, today at scale.”

Al Kifah Ready-Mix & Blocks to launch ConGreen reduced-CO2 concrete products

10 March 2022

Saudi Arabia: Al Kifah Ready-Mix & Blocks (KRB) has announced the upcoming launch of its ConGreen reduced-CO2 concrete products range at the Big 5 Saudi construction summit on 28 – 31 March 2022. ConGreen concretes replace clinker with lower-carbon materials such as pozzolan and use Canada-based Carbon Cure Technologies’ embedded recycled CO2 technology to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 30% compared to conventional ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concretes. In addition to this, KRB says that ConGreen concretes also provide improved workability and pumpability properties, as well as being highly durable, with high passing and finishability. They have very low rapid chloride permeability (RCP), water absorption and water permeability properties and low heat of hydration.

General Manager Nigel Harries said “We are committed to driving energy efficiency and addressing the global emission challenges. We aim to help build a better community and environment-friendly facilities by producing high-quality concrete, such as ConGreen, that has a reduced environmental impact and is characterised by its high performance, durability and sustainability, with a low carbon footprint as compared with standard concrete.”

CarbonBuilt and CarbonCure Technologies win carbon capture and storage design competition

20 April 2021

US/Canada: XPrize has named CarbonBuilt and CarbonCure Technologies as the winners of carbon capture and storage (CCS) design prizes worth US$20.0m. The competition ran at two power plants in Wyoming, US and Alberta, Canada. CarbonBuilt won the contest at the Wyoming plant with a concrete-curing based system. The concrete produced has a lower carbon footprint than conventionally produced concrete, according to XPrize. CarbonCure Technologies won the Alberta contest with a design based on carbonating the water used in washing cement trucks. This reportedly formed a concrete-strengthening slurry.

XPrize has partnered with Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation to launch a second round of CCS design prizes worth a total US$100m.
