Leilac-2 CCS project to begin in April 2020
30 March 2020Europe: Australia-based Calix has announced that construction will begin on its second low emissions intensity lime and cement (Leilac) carbon capture and storage (CCS) installation at a ‘European cement plant’ on 7 April 2020. ASX ComNews has reported that collaborators on the project, which has received Euro16m under the EU’s Horizon 2020 grant scheme, are Portugal-based Cimpor, Germany-based HeidelbergCement, Germany and France-based energy companies Ingenieurbüro-Kühlerbau-Neustadt (IKN) and Engie and Belgium-based minerals and lime company Lhoist. Calix has said that the 100,000t/yr process emissions capture facility will be operational in late 2024.
The company has appointed Emma Bowring Leilac-2 project leader.
The first Leilac installation was completed at HeidelbergCement’s 1.5Mt/yr integrated Lixhe plant in Belgium’s Limburg province in mid-2019.
UNACEM buys Cementos Portland for US$28m
12 October 2018Peru: UNACEM has purchased Cementos Portland (Cempor) for US$28m. It acquired a full stake in the company from Chile's Cementos Bío Bío and Brazil’s Votorantim Cimentos, according to Semana Económica magazine. Cementos Bío Bío and Votorantim originally planned to build a US$150m cement plant in Lima. However, this was delayed by a legal battle over environmental issues initiated by Unacem. The Peruvian cement producer operates an integrated plant in Lima.
Cementos Bío Bío sells Cementos Portland
11 October 2018Peru: Chile’s Cementos Bío Bío’s has sold its 50% share in Cementos Portland (Cempor) for US$14m. The cement producer originally purchased a stake in the company in 2010, according to the La Tercera newspaper. The Chilean company had previously intended to build a cement plant in Lima in a joint venture with Brazil’s Votorantim but this was delayed by legal opposition from Unacem.
Cempor fights legal action from UNACEM over Lima plant project
31 October 2017Peru: UNACEM has filed a lawsuit alleging environmental violations against Cempor. Cempor, a joint venture between Chile’s Cementos Bío Bío and Brazil’s Votorantim, plans to build a cement plant in Lima, according to the La Tercera newspaper. The legal move is the latest action in a long running battle between the cement producers over the project. Cempor has responded by alleging to National Institute for the Defence of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) that UNACEM’s conduct is contrary to the functioning of a free market.
Cementos Bío Bío and Votorantim originally formed Cempor in 2010 with each company holding a 29.5% stake. The other owners include IPSA and the World Cement Group with a 20.5% stake each. At this time Cempor planned to build a 07Mt/yr cement plant near Lima.
Peruvian joint venture plant no longer on the cards
29 January 2014Peru: Sources close to the Peruvian cement sector have reported that the shareholders of Cementos Portland (Cempor), a joint venture between Peru's Portland Investment World Cement Group, Brazil's Votorantim Cimentos and Chile's Cementos Bío Bío that was due to construct a cement plant close to the Peruvian capital Lima, did not reach an agreement on its agenda items. They are now to resolve their differences in an international commercial arbitration, which will probably take place in France. Issues came to a head at a meeting on 27 January 2014 due to a disagreement over financing.
