Steady January for Senegalese cement production
24 April 2023Senegal: Cement production in Senegal by Sococim, Dangote Cement and Ciments du Sahel fell by 5.6% month-on-month in January 2023. According to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography, this drop was due to weaker exports, which fell by 7.0% month-on-month. In contrast local cement sales improved by 6.5%.
Compared to January 2022, January 2023 saw an 11.1% increase in cement production volumes. Exports rose by 58.2% year-on-year, while local sales rose by +7.5%.
Sinoma CBMI Construction commissions new production line at Ciments du Sahel’s Kirene plant
08 February 2023Senegal: China-based Sinoma CBMI Construction has commissioned a new production line at Ciments du Sahel’s Kirene plant near Dakar. The new 6000t/day line is intended to replace the plant’s existing third production line. Ciments du Sahel signed a contract with Sinoma CBMI to upgrade the plant in 2020.
Aumund to supply conveying equipment to new line at Ciments du Sahel project in Senegal
24 December 2020Senegal: Aumund Group says that it is supplying conveying equipment to a new production line that will be built at Ciments du Sahel’s Kirene plant. The order package includes 23 bucket elevators, seven pan conveyors, eleven drag chain conveyors, two Samson material feeders, four Centrex silo discharge machines and 19 silo discharge gates. The machines will operate in all stages of the production process, from raw materials discharge to conveying between the clinker silo and the cement mill, and in the packing plant. Supply will be made in several tranches between March and June 2021. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2022.
China-based Sinoma International Engineering and its subsidiary CBMI Construction are the main contractors for the project. Aumund France and Aumund China, with support from Aumund Foerdertechnik, are the main divisions of Aumund working on the upgrade.
Senegal: Ciments du Sahel has begun work to increase the cement production capacity of its Kirene cement plant to 6Mt/yr. Agence de Presse Sénégalaise has reported that the installation of a third line at the company’s 3.0Mt/yr plant will double the unit’s capacity when opened before the end of 2023.
Chief executive officer (CEO) Latfallah Layousse said, "We are now at a production capacity of 3Mt/yr of cement. Currently, we are starting our third line with a doubling of our production capacity in the next three years. The doubling of our production capacity will allow us, in the long term, to rise to a higher level and become one of the largest cement factories in the region."
Les Ciments Du Sahel hires Sinoma International Engineering and Sinoma Construction for Kirene cement plant upgrade
19 August 2020Senegal: Sinoma subsidiaries Sinoma International Engineering and Sinoma Construction have signed a contract with Les Ciments Du Sahel for the upgrade of its 3.0Mt/yr Kirene cement plant in Dakar Region. The Euro245m contract stipulates that a new 6000t/day capacity cement production line will replace the plant’s old third line. Sinoma says that the new line will grind its first batch of cement from clinker in February 2022 and produce its own cement and clinker from October 2022. The group said, “We believe that the contract ought to present no significant challenge for the company.”
West African Development Bank approves loans for cement plant projects in Ivory Coast and Senegal
23 March 2018Ivory Coast/Senegal: The West African Development Bank (Board) has approved loans for cement plant projects in Ivory Coast and Senegal. It will give US$47m to Ciments Du Sahel for it to build a third clinker production line at its plant in Kirène. The new line will have a production capacity of 2.7Mt/yr. It has also approved a loan of US$9.4m for Ciments de Côte d’Ivoire (Cimivoire) to build a new 3Mt/yr cement grinding plant in Abidjan.
SOCOCIM aims at 56% market share in Senegal
06 September 2017Senegal: Youga Sow, the director general of SOCOCIM Industries, says that his company is aiming for a market share of above 56%. He made the comments at a local festival, according to local press. Sow added that the country produced 3.2Mt of cement in 2016 despite having a production capacity of 8Mt/yr. The other major cement producers include Ciments du Sahel and Dangote Cement.
Senegal introduces new cement tax
10 January 2017Senegal: The government of Senegal has introduced a tax of US$4.84/t of cement with effect from 2 January 2017. The tariff will apply to cement from the country’s three cement plants run by Ciments du Sahel, Sococim and Dangote, according to the Quotidien newspaper. Vendors are expected to pass the cost onto consumers with higher prices.
Cement production rose by 10% year-on-year to 5.15Mt in the first 10 months of 2016 from 4.68Mt in the same period in 2015 at the Ciments du Sahel and Sococim plants, according to data from the Directorate of Forecasting and Economic Studies (DPEE), reported upon by the African Press Agency. The increase has been attributed to a 25% surge in exports, although local sales have also risen slightly.
