Tanzania: The Petroleum Development Corporation (PDC) and Dangote Industries Tanzania have signed a 20-year deal to supply gas to Dangote Cement’s plant at Mtwara. The cement plant will produce up to 35MW of electricity from natural gas and this will later increase to 45MW, according to the Daily News newspaper. The energy supply will allow the unit to increase it production capacity to 6000t/day from 2000t/day and reduce its production costs.

At the ceremony marking the signing, Dangote Industries chief executive officer (CEO) Jagat Rathee said the company has been using an average of 106,000l/day of diesel to produce 2000 – 2500t/day of cement. The 3Mt/yr plant was commissioned in 2015 and is supported by 500Mt of limestone reserves. It is hoped that the new gas deal will reduce the price of cement in the country.

Malaysia: A US$70m contract with Lafarge Malaysia to supply cement for the East Coast Rail Link project has been suspended by China Communications Construction pending a government review. The deal was originally announced in March 2018. The cement producer said that the suspension is not expected to have any significant financial impact its operations in the period up to the suspension, as completed work shall be compensated for in accordance with the terms and conditions of the contract. However, going forward the company could not rule out any negative financial impact following the government review of the project.Lafarge Malaysia railway supply contract suspended

Vietnam: FCT Combustion Inc has secured a supply contract for its Turbu-Jet AF burner that fires low calorific value coal and fuel oil to Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin). It will be used at the group’s 0.8Mt/yr Quan Trieu cement plant in Thai Nguyen Province. Viet Bac Mining is a partner in the project.

US-based FCT Combustion, which launched its Turbu-Flex burner in April 2018, said that the product would enable the operator to switch between different fuels and optimise for each with one burner. Switching between alternative and refuse derived fuels (RDFs) is intended to allow cement and other industrial plants to lower fuel costs and improve kiln performance. The burner also offers reduced maintenance, as there are no moving parts needed to change the air supply.

Managing Director Con Manias said that FCT is mainly focused on building its footprint in Southeast Asia. It has recently won projects in China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Australia, prior to this one in Vietnam. The company is also working on an upgrade to the hot gas generator at Votorantim Group’s Vidal Ramos plant in Santa Catarina, Brazil. It is also supplying its Turbu-Jet AF burners with blowers, ignition, and flame detection systems to CSN Cimentos’ Arcos plant in Minas Gerais state, also in Brazil.

The company say that it has projects running in six continents due to a ‘surge’ in burner orders. It is currently working on projects in the US, Canada, Brazil, Ecuador, Poland, France, Egypt, Belgium, Italy, Algeria, Oman, Belgium, France, Ukraine, and Turkey, besides Asia Pacific.

Pakistan: GE Power has won a contract to design, manufacture and deliver a 132/6.3kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) grid station to support a new production line being built at Power Cement’s plant in Nooriabad. The project is expected to be completed in early 2019. It will supply the cement plant with a reliable electricity supply from the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company.

India: South Central Railway has signed a long-term tariff contract with Ramco Cements and Zuari Cements to transport freight at fixed rates. Ramco and Zuari have signed agreements for five and three years respectively. The railway company has previously signed similar deals with UltraTech Cement, India Cements, Orient Cements and Kesoram Industries.

Malaysia: Lafarge Malaysia has won a US$68.9m contract from China Communications Construction to supply cement for the East Coast Rail Link project. The contract will run until the end of 2019 with options for renewal by a further two years.

Argentina: Germany’s KHD has been awarded a contract by Holcim Argentina for the upgrade project of a clinker production line at its Malagueño cement plant near Córdoba. Holcim Argentina intends to recommission its mothballed 1650t/day production line, which originally was supplied by KHD Humboldt Wedag in the early 1980s. Commissioning for the updated line is planned for mid-2019.

KHD’s scope includes the engineering and supply of mechanical equipment for raw material preparation and clinker production as well as electrical equipment in order to modernise and recommission the currently mothballed production line no 1.

Core equipment for the project includes: tertiary raw material crusher with a capacity of 250t/hr; ball mill drive for existing ball mill and new feeding equipment for raw meal preparation; separator for raw material grinding plant; kiln feed dosing system; four-stage preheater; rotary kiln 4.4m x 64m and drive system; revamping of existing clinker cooler with ‘fourth generation’ walking floor grate; main bag house for kiln/mill and clinker cooler; and main process fans.

Vietnam: Xuan Thanh has hired Denmark’s FLSmidth to provide five onsite advisors with the purpose of optimising the production of its cement plant while minimising the production costs. The customer's 12,500t/day cement plant is located in Ha Nam, Vietnam, and is the largest cement plant in South East Asia. FLSmidth has also supplied the equipment for the cement plant since 2017.

"By implementing best practices and data from other cement plants globally, we can assist Xuan Thanh in improving their output while minimising their production costs. In other words we will enhance their productivity. This contract is a continuation of the long-standing partnership between Xuan Thanh and FLSmidth and will optimise the production of high quality cement to the local market," said Per Mejnert Kristensen, Group Executive Vice President, Cement Division of FLSmidth.

Saudi Arabia: Hail Cement has renewed its three-year asset management agreement with Finland’s Wärtsilä for the power plant at its Turbah plant. Wärtsilä provides guarantees for the performance of the power plant and ensures the reliability and availability of its operations. The operations of the power plant are remotely monitored from a Wärtsilä Expertise Centre for real-time data gathering and analysis. The agreement, signed in November 2017, is already the second renewal of Wärtsilä’s service agreement for the power plant in Turbah, the first agreement being signed in 2012.

“Wärtsilä has been responsible for the full operation and maintenance of our power plant in Turbah for about six years now. We have been satisfied with its flexibility, quality of service and emphasis on safety, and are happy to continue our co-operation with them,” said Matar Al Zahrani, chief executive officer (CEO) of Hail Cement.

The agreement covers the operation and maintenance of Hail Cement Factory’s power plant, including the day-to-day operation of the power plant, preventive and predictive maintenance as well as plant operations manpower, health and safety management. The 53MW base load power plant is equipped with seven Wärtsilä 32 engines and provides energy for Hail Cement Company’s cement factory as well as for the nearby residential area.

Saudi Arabia: Finland’s Wärtsilä has provided an update on a three-year asset management deal for Northern Region Cement’s (NRC) power plant at its Turaif plant signed in October 2017. Wärtsilä will continue to be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the power plant and to ensure the reliability and availability of its operations. This agreement is an extension of Wärtsilä’s previous service agreements for NRC’s power plant. The first service agreement with NRC was signed in 2008.

“We are proud to be able to continue our 10-year cooperation with NRC. By having full responsibility for the operation and maintenance of NRC’s power plant, we have been able to ensure reliable operations, optimised fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs for NRC,” said Haidar al Hertani, managing director, Wärtsilä Saudi Arabia.

The agreement covers all aspects of operating and maintaining NRC’s power plant, including the day-to-day operation of the power plant as well as preventive and predictive maintenance. Wärtsilä’s Customer Centre in Dubai remotely monitors the power plant’s condition. Wärtsilä has also carried out electrical and automation services to improve the performance and extend the lifespan of NRC’s power plant.

The 62MW power plant is equipped with nine Wärtsilä 32 engines and provides energy for NRC’s Turaif cement plant. The cement plant has two production lines, producing nearly 10,000t/day of cement.
