Ramco Cements to inaugurate 2Mt/yr Nandyal cement plant

26 September 2022

India: Ramco Cements plans to inaugurate its upcoming Nandyal cement plant in Kalvatala, Andhra Pradesh, on 28 September 2022. The Sakshi Post newspaper has reported that the plant will have a cement capacity of 2Mt/yr. Ramco Cements’ planned total capital expenditure (CAPEX) investments during the 2023 and 2024 financial years (1 April 2022 – 31 March 2024) are expected to reach US$154 – 167m.

Two West Bengali welders fell to their deaths at the site of the upcoming Nandyal cement plant on 25 September. The welders had been working on a conveyor system when it snapped. The Times of India newspaper has reported that both workers died immediately. Police have informed their relatives and are conducting post-mortems.

Police intervene in battle for Cruz Azul’s Tula cement plant

27 July 2022

Mexico: State police have intervened during a confrontation between rival groups for control of Cruz Azul’s Tula cement plant in Hidalgo. A group of workers, allegedly numbering 1000 people, aligned to the faction that controls the majority of Cruz Azul’s cement plants travelled to the site in Jasso by bus and taxi on the evening of 26 July 2022, according to La Jornada newspaper. Another group defending the plant reportedly blocked local roads and used sticks, pipes and stones to repel the assault. The police managed to deter most of the convoy travelling to the plant. However, eight deaths occurred when some of the attackers made it through.

The Tula cement plant is the sole remaining Cruz Azul unit still controlled by former company director Guillermo ‘Billy’ Álvarez and his associates. The rest of the company is under the command of Cruz Azul’s directors José Antonio Marín and Víctor Manuel Velázquez.

Conveyor belt disaster kills worker at Harleyville cement plant

US: A 43-year old worker died after sustaining severe injuries at Giant Cement’s Harleyville, South Carolina, cement plant on 21 July 2022. Local press has reported that the cause of the tragedy involved a conveyor belt at the plant.

Worker dies at Holcim Argentina’s Malagueño cement plant

16 June 2022

Argentina: A man has died in a concrete silo collapse at Holcim Argentina’s Malagueño cement plant in Córdoba Province. Pedro Rivero, 67, had been working on the site at 11am on 15 June 2022 when the disaster occurred. Local press has reported that the collapsing silo crushed the crane which Rivero had been operating.

An investigation by the Argentinian Judicial Police into the causes of the event is currently underway.

Eight people die in Cooperative La Cruz Azul takeover attempt

28 April 2022

Mexico: Eight people have died in an armed clash at Cooperativa La Cruz Azul’s Hidalgo cement plant. The El País newspaper has reported that attackers riding in multiple trucks arrived at the plant in the early hours of 27 April 2022. In addition to the eight dead, a further 12 people were wounded in the ensuing fight with defenders. Attackers also destroyed some control panel wiring at the plant and set fire to eight vehicles. The altercation caused a suspension of cement production at the facility.

Police detained nine suspects and have established a watch at the Hidalgo plant.

India: An explosion at a cement plant in Gujarat’s Rajkot district has killed three workers. The Times of India newspaper has reported that police have detained two engineers on suspicion of criminal negligence.

Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, former Dangote Cement managing director, dies

13 April 2022

Nigeria: Joseph Oyeyani Makoju, former managing director of Dangote Cement and advisor to Aliko Dangote, died in hospital in Abuja on 11 April 2022 whilst suffering from a heart condition. He was 73 years old, according to the Daily Independent newspaper. Makoju, an engineer by training, also served as a Special Advisor for Electrical Power under the former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

Following a career in the Nigerian power sector, Makoju worked internationally for Shell-BP, Blue Circle Cement in the UK and for West Africa Portland Cement Company (WAPCO), part of Lafarge. He joined Dangote Cement in 2009 as Special Advisor to Aliko Dangote and was subsequently promoted to chief executive officer / Group Managing Director in April 2018. He retired from the company in January 2020.

BUA Cement resumes operations at Sokoto cement plant following deadly fire

21 March 2022

Nigeria: BUA Cement’s Sokoto cement plant has resumed operations following a fire that killed three workers. The Sun newspaper has reported that the fire began at a diesel storage tank depot near to the plant, where third-party contract workers were welding a diesel storage tank. The group said that it activated a swift response in order to prevent any escalation of the incident.

Protesters allege fatal beating of worker by Dalmia Cement contractors

18 March 2022

India: Employees of a contract firm working at Dalmia Cement’s Bokaro grinding plant in Jharkhand have allegedly killed a worker in an attack on 15 March 2022. The deceased’s roommate has also been missing since then. Both workers had been in trouble with their employer for refusing to work overtime. Operations reportedly continued as normal at the plant until other loading workers began a protest on 16 March 2022.

Dalmia Cement spokesperson Shyamlal Sahu said “The matter was brought to the notice of local police and they have started their probe. We are cooperating with them to bring the culprits to justice. We will work with the contractor – Durga Enterprises – to extend support to the bereaved family. We, at Dalmia Bharat, accord highest priority to maintaining internal harmony and a healthy working environment, and will work with our contractors towards ensuring that such untoward incidents do not happen in the future.”

GCC worker dies following explosion at Chihuahua cement plant

28 February 2022

Mexico: GCC has reported that a worker at its Chihuahua cement has died in hospital following an explosion on 25 Feburary which injured five others. The company says that it activated all safety protocols in response to the disaster and coordinated its actions with the responding authorities. It continues to support the investigation into the cause of the blast.

The company said “Unfortunately, one of the six injured died in hospital. We are currently in contact with his family, to whom we have expressed our deepest condolences, and with the families of our other injured collaborators to make all our support and resources available to them at this difficult time.”
