New ownership enters Athi River Mining Cement plant
15 October 2019Kenya: The new owners of Athi River Mining Cement entered the company’s 0.7Mt/yr integrated Kaloleni cement plant on 14 October 2019. The Standard has reported that Narendra Raval, chairman of Devki Group, which also owns National Cement, was held up for some time at the entrance, because security guards had not received orders to let him in. Raval spoke to employees, promising that all 1100 would keep their jobs following completion of the takeover, whereupon all salaries would be harmonised with those of their National Cement colleagues.
Devki Group orders waste heat recovery unit from Sinoma Energy
22 January 2019Kenya: Devki Group has ordered a waste heat recovery (WHR) unit from China’s Sinoma Energy for its Athi River plant as part of a US$250m package. The deal also includes supplying a power plant for the company’s steel plant in Kilifi, according to the Daily Nation newspaper. Both projects will be completed by late 2020.
Simba Cement opens new grinding plant in Uganda
29 August 2018Uganda: Simba Cement has opened a new 1Mt/yr grinding plant in Tororo. The unit had an investment of US$45m, according to the Daily Monitor newspaper. The plant was built by Mepani Technical Services and construction started in early 2016. Simba Cement Uganda is a subsidiary of National Cement Kenya, which is part of Devki Group.
