Flender opens new Sydney production and service centre
11 September 2023Australia: Germany-based Flender has opened a new production and services centre in Sydney, New South Wales. Its product offering will include Flender’s gearboxes and couplings range for industrial applications, including cement plants.
CEO Andreas Evertz said “For both our wind [turbine drives] and industrial business we see enormous growth potential on the continent. To reach the goals of the Paris climate agreement we must not only ramp up renewable energy capacities, but also transform our industries towards sustainability. This includes recycling and establishing a circular economy. Our workshops are perfectly equipped for servicing and refurbishing the existing installed base, not only for our own fleet but all gearbox types in the market.”
Flender enlarges Voerde production plant
17 May 2023Germany: Flender has officially completed construction work on an expansion at its site in Voerde with the opening of its new logistics and storage hall for the assembly of large gear units. The hall has been built on an open area on the company's premises covering almost 8000m2. The new building is part of the drive manufacturer’s investments to be able to handle the expected growth in the global wind energy business and to drive the energy transition in Europe. In addition to large components for wind power gearboxes, the logistics hall will also serve its industrial business. The company has also leased another 10,000m2 hall, directly next door to its Voerde unit, to further support its logistics.
Flender’s chief executive officer Andreas Evertz said "With the new storage areas, we are making our logistics processes sustainable and thus reducing a considerable part of the previous transport routes and the associated CO2 emissions. Components that were previously stored elsewhere can now be stored centrally and made available for assembly more quickly with optimised transport routes.”
Flender’s Voerde plant is the company’s largest in Germany with an area of 276,000m2. It employs 1500 people.
Germany: Robert Habeck, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, has visited specialist Flender at the Hannover Messe trade fair. He spoke with the company’s head Andreas Evertz about the energy transition goals for Germany and Europe, Flender's role as a supplier for the wind sector, and the importance of an energy-efficient industry on the way to reach global climate goals. The mechanical drive manufacturer was part of the government minister’s official tour of the exhibition.
Habeck said, "Discussing about the expansion of renewable energies, we usually talk about the electrical output, the production. But here at Hannover Messe, we see also the other side of the coin. A lot of the industrial production is here in Germany, or at least with German companies. And when you say the market is now swinging in and growing, that's good news." He added that “It is challenging to bring electricity production out of renewables to 80% of the demand by 2030, but it is possible."
Evertz said "Flender is a major driver of the energy transition. And this starts with any kind of materials. In drive technology, Flender not only manufactures wind gearboxes, but industrial gearboxes that are involved in the production of raw materials for wind turbines. Flender is part of nearly every supply chain."
Other recent interest shown by the German government include a tour by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock of Flender’s plant in Tianjin as part of a tour of China.
Germany: Flender has appointed Christian Terlinde as its group chief financial officer (CFO), with effect from 1 July 2023. He will succeed group chief executive officer Andreas Evertz in the post, who has been working in the role on an interim basis.
Terlinde is currently the CFO at Germany-based commercial vehicle supplier Jost Werke. Prior to this, he held positions included CFO at Benteler Automotive and finance and controlling roles at Mahle Group and EON.
Flender begins Voerde logistics centre expansion
17 December 2021Germany: Flender has launched the construction of a new 8000m2 storehouse at its Voerde, North Rhine-Westphalia, logistics centre. Along with the lease of an additional building from project developer Panattoni, the project will expand Flender’s total storage footprint by 19,000m2. The supplier says that the new facilities will reduce the Voerde centre’s CO2 by optimising its transport routes.
Flender CEO Andreas Evertz said "I am very happy that the expansion of our site in Voerde will allow us to centralise our logistics activities, bringing us another step closer to our goal of operating in a completely carbon neutral fashion by 2030. With the new warehouse space, we are making our logistics processes sustainable and thus reducing a significant part of the previous transport routes and the associated CO2 emissions.”
Germany: Flender has appointed Peter Waller as its chief financial officer (CFO) with effect from 1 May 2021. He will succeed Ulrich Stock in the post who has decided to retire from the post by mutual agreement. Waller holds international and capital market experience. He was most recently CFO of Swissport International and for CEVA Logistics. Stock, has been employed in various functions in the Siemens Group worldwide since 1991 and joined Flender as CFO in October 2012. He will continue to advise the company.
Germany: Flender and Schaeffler have launched the Schaeffler Modular Adaptable Returnable Transport (SMART) Box, a packaging system for bearings. Flender says that the reusable box reduces waste by replacing disposable packaging.
Chief executive officer Andreas Evertz said, “Over the past few years, Flender has systematically minimised its own CO2 emissions and was able to reduce them by 83% between 2015 and 2020. We want to be completely CO2-neutral by 2030. In addition, close cooperation with customers and suppliers is another important step towards achieving complete climate neutrality. It is therefore important for us to also focus on potential savings in the supply chain. We are pleased to have a partner in Schaeffler who is also thinking in this direction. With the introduction of SMART Box for one type of gearbox, we are already reducing the use of wood as one-way packaging material by more than 100t/yr.”
Flender leaves Siemens and launches new supplier portal
19 March 2021Germany: Flender says it has resumed trading as an ‘independent’ company following the completion of its sale by Siemens to Carlyle Group for Euro2.04bn. The mechanical and electrical drive system supplier said that its existing contract remained unchanged, adding, “With our skilled employees, excellent range of products, and a growth-oriented new owner, we are in an ideal position to act even more effectively.”
The ownership change coincides with the launch of Flender’s new Jaegger Direct supplier portal. The portal succeeds SCM Star, the tool used by Simens, in handling requests for quotation, tender management and company profile data. The company asked customers to register with Jaggaer Direct to confirm the transfer of their data from SCM Star. It said that it will dispatch email invitations and login links in the coming days.
