Holcim US inaugurates waste tyre processing plant at Alpena cement plant

02 June 2023

US: Holcim US has inaugurated a waste tyre processing plant at its Alpena cement plant in Michigan. The facility will process 22,000t/yr of tyres into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use at the cement plant. Holcim US partner Geocycle will collect, pre-process and deliver the tyres to the new facility.

Holcim US’ North regional senior vice president of manufacturing Michael Nixon said "Holcim has invested more than US$100m in eco-friendly technologies at the Alpena plant in the past 15 years. The tyre-derived fuel facility is another strong demonstration of our commitment to reducing emissions."

Estelle Bletry appointed Geocycle’s new sales manager

15 March 2023

France: Estelle Bletry has taken on the role of sales manager for Holcim’s waste management subsidiary Geocycle. Bletry held different positions in Lafarge France between 2007 and 2019. She worked as product development manager and business developer materials and solutions at waste management company Hesus from 2019 to March 2023. Bletry studied marketing at IUT Cergy-Pontoise in Paris.

Holcim Spain appoints new managers for Carboneras and Sagunto cement plants

Spain: Holcim Spain has appointed Lucas García and Raúl Lannegrand respectively as the managers of the Sagunto and Carboneras cement plants. García succeeds José Luis Coleto, who is moving to a human resources position.

García has worked for Holcim Spain for over 25 years. He has been the manager of the Jerez de la Frontera plant since 2014. Prior to this he held maintenance and production roles. He holds electrical engineering qualifications from the Technical University of Cartagena and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena,

Lannegrand was previously operations manager of Geocycle, Holcim's industrial waste management subsidiary. He has a degree in chemistry from the Autonomous University of Madrid and a Master's degree in Research in Inorganic Chemistry, Lannegrand has knowledge in the field of construction materials research from three years spent at the Institute of Construction Sciences Eduardo Torroja (CSIC).

Geocycle signs fly ash deal with Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities

22 February 2023

US: Holcim subsidiary Geocycle has signed a multi-year contract with Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities to market fly ash produced by the power generation companies. Geocycle and Holcim will use to up to around 225,000t/yr of fly ash to produce blended cement products.

Sophie Wu, Head of Geocycle North America, said “In line with Geocycle’s commitment and passion for recycling and achieving a net zero future, we are honoured to partner with Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities to develop creative and efficient solutions that contribute to the circular economy.” She added, “Together we’ll be able develop blended cementitious materials, reduce CO2 levels and further encourage carbon neutral construction.”

Mariusz Adamek appointed chief operating officer at Cement Ożarów

Poland: CRH-subsidiary Cement Ożarów has appointed Mariusz Adamek as its chief operating officer. He was previously the company’s Industrial Director. Prior to this he was the managing director of Geocycle in Poland. Earlier in his career he worked for Lafarge with placement in Poland and Egypt.

Lafarge Canada and TransAlta to collaborate on fly ash processing

11 January 2023

Canada: Lafarge Canada has signed an agreement with power provider TransAlta to recover and process fly ash from the site of the latter's decommissioned Edmonton coal-fired power plant. The project will use Ash-TEK's Ponded Ash Beneficiation System (PABS) fly ash beneficiation technology. The processed ash will then be able to replace up to 25% of cement in low-CO2 concrete production.

TransAlta previously secured with Lafarge Canada for the supply of renewable power to its Exshaw, Alberta, cement plant in February 2022.

Adani Cement launches Geoclean

13 December 2022

India: Adani Cement has announced the launch of a dedicated waste processing subsidiary called Geoclean. Geoclean will process waste for recycling and use as alternative fuel (AF) in its cement production and alternative raw materials in its production of other building materials. Geoclean inherits the projects and all 14 waste management plants of its predecessor company Geocycle India. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that Geoclean aims to help Adani Cement to co-process 3.7Mt of AF over the five-year period up to the end of 2027. This would raise its subsidiaries ACC and Ambuja Cements’ AF substitution rate to 30%, from 6% in 2021.

Adani Cement CEO Ajay Kapur said "We are committed to building a sustainable future by adopting clean and green technologies in our overall business. We have always believed in environmental conservation, and are committed to making the optimum contribution towards co-processing waste responsibly for a sustainable future. Adani Cement will continue its endeavours to promote sustainability and build a cleaner and greener planet."

Holcim Philippines to co-process Panacan’s plastic waste at Davao cement plant

13 September 2022

Philippines: Holcim Philippines has signed a deal to receive 6.5t/yr of shredded waste from Bunawan municipality’s Panacan barangay for co-processing as alternative fuel (AF) in its cement production. SeeNews has reported that Holcim’s waste management subsidiary GeoCycle will process the AF. The partners aim to increase the volume of deliveries in future.

Davao cement plant manager Sam Manlosa said, “We are proud to provide our host barangay Panacan a sustainable waste management solution and thankful for their trust. We hope this partnership will further expand to other communities and the entire city of Davao so we can be a stronger partner in its sustainable progress.”

Panacan is the 28th community throughout the Philippines to enter into a waste management partnership with Holcim Philippines, and its 18th new partner in 2022. In August 2022, the company secured deliveries of waste collected in Bulacan province’s Binangonan, Cainta and Taytay municipalities in Rizal province for co-processing at its Bulacan cement plant.

Holcim Argentina's capacity expenditure investments to total US$40m in 2022

08 July 2022

Argentina: Holcim Argentina says that it will invest US$40m in capital expenditure in 2022. It plans to invest US$15m in its cement and concrete operations and US$15m in subsidiary Geocycle's three waste management plants, which supply alternative fuel for its cement production. Of the remainder, US$5m will go towards the construction of a new dry mortars plant in Córdoba, which the company plans to inaugurate in December 2022.

Lafarge North America’s Paulding plant achieves 99% alternative fuel substitution

US: Lafarge North America has reported that its Paulding, Ohio, plant achieved 99% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its cement production, up from 95% in past years. The operator said that the fuel change saved 205,000t of CO2 emissions in 2021.
