Heidelberg Materials UK launches evoBuild
30 October 2024UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has launched evoBuild, a global brand for low-carbon and circular cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates and asphalt products, in line with its parent company's sustainability strategy. According to the company, EvoBuild products either reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 30% or incorporate at least 30% recycled content.
This launch complements evoZero, the ‘world's first carbon-captured net-zero cement’, launched by Heidelberg Materials in November 2023. All eligible products from Heidelberg Materials UK will be integrated into the evoBuild portfolio ‘over the coming years.’
UK: The government has announced a €26.3bn investment to develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in northern England. The investment will subsidise three projects to capture CO₂ from various sources, including Heidelberg Materials’ Padeswood cement plant, and support infrastructure for transporting and storing CO₂ in Liverpool Bay and the North Sea. The initiative also plans to establish the UK's first large-scale hydrogen production plant. The funding, promised over the next 25 years, aims to establish two carbon capture clusters in Merseyside and Teesside. The investment is expected to create ‘thousands’ of jobs, attract €9.5bn in private investment and advance the UK's climate objectives.
Heidelberg Materials UK CEO Simon Willis said “Today’s announcement from the government to drive ahead with investment in CCS clusters is a major milestone in the decarbonisation of UK industry and sets the construction sector on the path to net zero. As part of the HyNet North West decarbonisation cluster, we are bringing forward our plans for the CCS plant at a UK cement works at Padeswood in North Wales. The government’s backing of this critical technology means that the production of zero carbon cement before the end of this decade has taken a big step forward.”
UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has acquired Bristol-based B&A Group. B&A Group employs a team of 70 and specialises in recycled and primary aggregate supply, site clearance, earthworks, land remediation and sustainable land regeneration. In its most successful year in 2023, the company achieved over US$63.5m in turnover and a pre-tax profit of US$11.5m.
CEO of Heidelberg Materials UK, Simon Willis, said “This announcement follows the completion of our acquisition of Mick George and adds an additional source of high-quality recycled materials for use in our sustainable building materials. It is an exciting opportunity for us, and I am looking forward to working with the B&A Group to grow the business further.”
UK: C-Capture has initiated a carbon capture trial at Heidelberg Materials’ Ketton cement works in Rutland, as part of its national 'XLR8 CCS' project aimed at accelerating low-cost carbon capture solutions in industries like cement and glass. The trial utilises C-Capture’s technology, which employs a solvent to selectively capture CO₂ from emissions. According to the company, this process does not rely on the use of amines, therefore requiring 40% less energy than conventional methods and reduces costs. The carbon capture solvent compatibility unit designed by C-Capture and partner Wood will test the effectiveness of this technology in removing CO₂ from flue gas emissions produced during the cement manufacturing process.
XLR8 CCS is funded with €2m from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero’s €1.2bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio. The funding is part of the €23m Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) Innovation 2.0 programme aimed at accelerating the deployment of next-generation CCUS technology in the UK. Additional private sector contributions support a €3.1m total.

UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has opened a new circular materials hub at its Appleford depot in Oxfordshire. The site will recycle construction waste for use in low-CO2 building materials. The move advances the company’s strategy to conserve natural materials and support the circular economy.
Recycling managing director James Whitelaw said “Recycling, reusing and reducing the use of primary raw materials is crucial to reaching net zero. Our network of recycling hubs will allow us to provide the most sustainable products to our customers through circularity and innovation to enable building more with less.”
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to deliver full-scale carbon capture system at Heidelberg Materials UK's Padeswood cement plant
06 February 2024UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has awarded Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) a front end engineering design (FEED) contract for an upcoming carbon capture installation at its Padeswood cement plant in Flintshire. Australia-based Worley will also collaborate on the project, which is scheduled to become operational in 2028. The partners aim to capture up to 800,000t/yr of CO2 using MHI’s amine solvent-based Advanced KM CDR process. MHI previously conducted a pre-FEED carbon capture study at the Padeswood plant, beginning in 2022.
Heidelberg Materials UK chief executive officer Simon Willis said "This is a decisive next step in our plans to install carbon capture technology at our Padeswood cement works. Once operational, it will provide net zero building materials for major projects across the country, enabling us to help decarbonise the construction industry and meet our ambition to become a net zero business."
MHI CEO and head of engineering solutions Kenji Terasawa said "Heidelberg Materials UK has committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2050 and will be deploying our proprietary carbon capture technology, the Advanced KM CDR process, to tackle this challenge, leading the way in the UK's cement industry."
Heidelberg Materials UK achieves updated BES 6001 standard
22 January 2024UK: Heidelberg Materials UK has received certification to the revised BES 6001 standard across its entire business. The Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products, version 4.0:2023, emphasises sustainable procurement and supply chain engagement, alongside environmental aspects such as biodiversity. It covers products including cement, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and concrete. The producer says that this will help it to secure additional green building certification schemes credits.
Sustainability director Marian Garfield said "We are delighted to have been awarded the 'excellent' level of certification by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), which demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and supporting our customers in our shared net zero ambitions."
Hanson UK becomes Heidelberg Materials UK
02 October 2023UK: Germany-based Heidelberg Materials has introduced customers and investors to Heidelberg Materials UK, its UK subsidiary formerly known as Hanson UK. The latest rebrand signifies increasing collaboration across the group’s geographies as a global business with one voice. Heidelberg Materials UK will launch rebranded packaging for its cement and other products in early 2024 and transition its branding across its sites and vehicles by October 2025.
Heidelberg Materials UK CEO Simon Willis said “The construction sector faces global challenges such as climate change and the digitalisation of our industry; challenges we are better placed to meet as a strong, united group.
