UltraTech Cement expands Karur grinding plant

17 February 2025

India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned 0.6Mt/yr of new cement grinding capacity at its Karur grinding plant in Tamil Nadu. The expansion follows the commissioning of a 2.7Mt/yr greenfield grinding unit at the site in April 2024. The plant's total capacity is now 3.3Mt/yr. The additional capacity will reportedly help UltraTech to meet the rising demand for composite cement in South India and improve its blended cement ratio.

The producer's domestic grey cement capacity now stands at 167Mt/yr and its global capacity at 172Mt/yr.

Shree Cement signs US$961m cement plant MoU with government of Karnataka

13 February 2025

India: Shree Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Karnataka to invest nearly US$1bn in cement manufacturing facilities over the next five years. The producer will build a cement plant in the city of Kalaburagi, with 3.5Mt/yr of clinker capacity and 3Mt/yr of cement capacity, for US$288m. The plant will create 300 jobs and start production in 2025.

Shree Cement will build a second plant nearby, in the Kalaburagi district. The plant will have a clinker capacity of 3.5Mt/yr and an eventual cement capacity of 6Mt/yr, to be commissioned in two phases. It will create 750 jobs and cost US$575m. Commissioning is scheduled for 2030.

The last project planned is for a clinker grinding plant in the district of Bangalore Rural, with a capacity of 3Mt/yr and a cost of US$98m. The facility will create 250 jobs and begin production in 2028.

Shree Cement has stated that it is ‘committed to sustainable development’ and will ‘incorporate advanced technologies to ensure environmentally friendly operations.’

Titan Cement enters Indian market for low-carbon building materials venture

13 February 2025

India: Titan Cement Group has entered the South Asian market through a joint venture with India-based supplementary cementitious materials producer JAYCEE. The producer will hold a majority stake in the new company Atlas EcoSolutions. The venture will source, process, market and distribute supplementary cementitious materials globally in order to help its customers build sustainable construction projects using alternatives to clinker-based cement.

Head of supply chain and energy development Jean-Philippe Benard said "This joint venture aligns perfectly with our strategy to remain at the forefront of low-carbon building materials and highlights our unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation. Entering the South Asian market positions us in a region with vast potential, both in market demand and sustainability impact. Securing long-term access to SCMs provides Titan Group a key alternative for strategically diversifying its portfolio with new low-carbon cements."

JK Lakshmi Cement’s sales down in first nine months

07 February 2025

India: JK Lakshmi Cement’s net sales fell by 15% year-on-year to US$453m in the nine months to 31 December 2024 from US$534m in the same period in 2023. Its sales volumes of cement dropped by 9% to 6.44Mt from 7.06Mt. Its profit after tax decreased to US$25.6m from US$32.2m.

UltraTech Cement commissions grinding capacity at Sonar Bangla plant

06 February 2025

India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned an additional 0.6Mt/yr grinding capacity at its integrated Sonar Bangla plant in West Bengal. It said the upgrade would help it meet cement demand in East India and enable it to increase its blended cement ratio. The company says that its domestic cement production capacity is now 166Mt/yr with an additional 5Mt/yr overseas.

Shiva Cement raises sales in first nine months of 2025 financial year

India: Shiva Cement raised its sales to US$23.4m in the nine months of its 2025 financial year, up by 1% year-on-year from US$23.1m in the corresponding period in the 2024 financial year. Nonetheless, the company's net loss grew by 58% year-on-year, to US$10.2m.

House building campaign expected to boost cement demand in Indonesia

04 February 2025

Indonesia: A government scheme to build three millions houses per year is expected to boost demand for cement. Special envoy for climate change and energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said that the country had secured financing from Qatar to construct four to six million housing units, according to Antara. An agreement has been secured with the UAE to build one million houses. Hashim also mentioned that countries including China, Türkiye, India and Singapore had expressed interest in investing. The government’s housing budget plan for 2025 is currently valued at around US$310m.

Indian Cement Manufacturers Association welcomes new budget

04 February 2025

India: The Cement Manufacturers’ Association (CMA) has praised the Indian government’s Union Budget 2025 – 2026 for its ‘sustained core focus’ on infrastructure, housing and sustainable development. United News of India has reported that the budget provides for interest-free loans for state governments’ infrastructure projects and additional funding for research and development.

The CMA said that this aligns with its own development goals, within which it envisions the cement sector playing a growing role in a ‘sustainable, resilient’ economy.

Kaushalya Logistics starts operations at depot in Bathnaha

04 February 2025

India: Kaushalya Logistics has started operations at a new depot in Bathnaha, Bihar, as part of its logistics services for ACC. This latest site brings the company's total operational locations to 90. It is its fourth depot under its so-called ‘CCFA model’ for the subsidiary of Adani Cement. Kaushalya Logistics transports cement and handles associated logistics on behalf of companies including Adani Cement and JK Cement. It aims to handle a volume of 3.6Mt/yr of cement as part of its current expansion plans.

Shree Cement profits fall in 2024

31 January 2025

India: Shree Cement has reported that, in the third quarter of the 2025 financial year, its profit after tax fell by 72%, to US$22.4m, down from US$81m in the previous corresponding period. The company’s net consolidated total income declined by 12% year-on-year to US$540m, whilst sales volumes increased by 15% to 8.77Mt compared to the second quarter of the 2025 financial year. The company plans to commission its ongoing expansion projects in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh in the first quarter of the 2025-2026 financial year.
