Lafarge Emirates Cement hires Turboden for Fujairah cement plant waste heat recovery plant
07 July 2023UAE: Lafarge Emirates Cement, part of Holcim, has awarded a contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group subsidiary Turboden to supply and install a 10MW waste heat recovery (WHR) system at its Fujairah cement plant. The system relies on ENGIE Solutions' organic Rankine cycle technology. The supplier says that the installation will reduce the 3.2Mt/yr cement plant's energy-related CO2 emissions by 29,000t/yr (28%).
Turboden CEO Paolo Bertuzzi said "We are proud that Holcim Group, already our customer for three other WHR plants, has again chosen Turboden for this first project in the UAE. At COP 28, this year in the UAE, we will have the opportunity to present this energy-saving and CO2-reducing project to raise awareness in energy intensive industries."
UAE: The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Emirates RDF have signed four memoranda of understanding (MOU) with Fujairah Cement Industries, JSW Cement, Lafarge Emirates and Star Cement to use alternative fuels produced by the Emirates RDF in the Umm Al Quwain Emirate in their manufacturing operations.
Emirates RDF’s plant treats and transforms municipal solid waste (MSW) from Umm Al Quwain and the emirate of Ajman into refuse derived fuel (RDF). The ministry said in a statement that MOUs are part of its support for integrated waste management projects that treat waste and transform it into economic resources in line with the Ministerial Decree No. 98 of 2019 on using RDF in cement factories. Cement plants in the UAE will be encouraged to meet 10% percent of their total thermal energy needs using RDF.
Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said, “The participation of the private sector is a main pillar of the UAE’s green economy transition and the adoption of circular economy methods, the foremost of which is integrated waste management. The signing of the agreements with a group of leading cement factories in the country to partially use alternative fuel in their operations is a high-impact step within our efforts to implement integrated waste management and reduce harmful emissions.”
Lafarge Emirates Cement to install waste heat recovery plant at Fujairah cement plant
18 August 2022UAE: Lafarge Emirates Cement plans to install an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its Fujairah cement plant. Gulf News has reported that the producer will fund the upgrade through a transition trade facility provided by UK-based bank Standard Chartered. The facility is part of the bank’s planned US$300bn-worth of green finance funding up to 2030.
Lafarge Emirates Cement general manager Olivier Milhaud said “This is one of the major milestones in our journey towards sustainability. The WHR project encourages the use of clean and environmentally friendly energy in our operations and also supports our global mission to build a Net Zero world.”
Lafarge Emirates orders burner from FLSmidth
02 August 2018UAE: Lafarge Emirates has ordered a Jetflex Plus burner for its Fujairah cement plant from FLSmidth. Thierry Terriere, the plant manager, and Simon Jensen, head of FLSmidth Middle-East, signed the contract.
“As the business has shifted towards using low-cost fuels with high-quality clinker, we have made an ambitious decision and chosen the best option on the market – this next generation burner from FLSmidth," Sohail Qaiser, Process Manager at Lafarge Emirates Cement. He added that the company expects a ‘significant’ change in its fuel mix cost as well as a more sustainable kiln operation.
FLSmidth says that the Jetflex Plus burner is the first to be installed in the LafargeHolcim Group and that the company was selected for procurement and supervision of the installation of it. The burner product has rotatable jet air nozzles allowing for optimal adjustment of the flame as well as the low NOx emissions for various fuel types and operating conditions.
The relationship between the companies dates back to 2007 when FLSmidth built the 7500t/day Fujairah plant for Orascom.
