Lafarge Africa hosts renewables event
10 July 2023Nigeria: Holcim subsidiary Lafarge Africa hosted industry professional and policy makers at an event dedicated to advancing understanding of renewable energy on 8 July 2023. The Business and Financial Times newspaper has reported that the event included a panel session entitled 'The Business of Clean Energy: Opportunities for Industries.'
Lafarge Africa chair Prince Adebode Adefioye said "It is about stimulating every part of our economy, creating incentives for investors in clean energy and for people and businesses to embrace the use of clean energy products and technologies. It allows Nigeria not only to boost its energy supply and create new high-value jobs, but also to be at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions and saving our planet. Therefore, the whole idea is to bring people together to be able to stimulate ideas, even the banks and broader financial sector, to involve them in creating innovative tech and financial products that allow us to generate and use energy more effectively and productively.”
CEO Khaled El Dokani added “Fighting climate change and making the transition towards a greener economy requires a concerted effort by industries, individuals and the government. As a leader in innovation, Lafarge will continue to collaborate with stakeholders and we expect that the discussions by a range of industry experts and public officials here present today will provide a clear view of the business of clean energy and reveal the opportunities, insights and strategic agendas for leaders in the private and public sectors to accelerate our society’s access to clean energy.”
Nigeria: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge Africa has donated three of its facilities - along with personal protective equipment (PPE) - for use to isolate and treat coronavirus patients. Lafarge Africa chief executive officer (CEO) Khaled El Dokani said, “Our intervention will relieve healthcare facilities in Lagos and in our host communities, to support those fighting COVID-19.”

Nigeria: The management of Lafarge Nigeria has urged stakeholders in the cement sector to cooperate on the need for proper product labelling by manufacturers.
The company's general manager (Industrial Performance), Lanre Opakunle, said that the step was necessary to address the issue of incorrect cement application in the Nigeria. Opakunle said that there is a need to review how cement products are labelled in order to educate end users on the basic steps necessary for the correct application and results.
"We discovered that labelling is not adequate and we made some proposals," said Opakunle. "However, those proposals have not been taken on board. We will keep making efforts to see that they are." Opakunle added that correct labelling would help to ensure that people have the right information at their disposal.
"Lafarge is the only cement manufacturer in the market that puts the uses and specifications of cement on their bags," said Opakunle. "In our technical submission to SON we said that we want to do more than that; we want to put it in a way that the layman can understand." He noted that issues of cement application should not dwell on the cement grades; rather it should be about knowing the right mix.
"The most widely used individual application of cement in the world is 32.5 grade," said Opakunle. "It is important that the user understands how to use whatever grade of cement that is available on the shelf because of certain risks which may maybe associated with these grades, whether it is 32.5 or 42.5 grade. The information should be properly labelled on the bags."
