US: Lafarge North America has reported that its Paulding, Ohio, plant achieved 99% alternative fuel (AF) substitution in its cement production, up from 95% in past years. The operator said that the fuel change saved 205,000t of CO₂ emissions in 2021.

US: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge North America’s Presque Isle quarry, which supplies raw limestone to its 2.6Mt/yr Alpena integrated cement plant – both in Michigan – has won the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA)’s Gold Award in the Community Relations Excellence category. Business Wire has reported that it previously won Gold for Environmental Excellence in 2018. In recognition of its consecutive Golds, the NSSGA honoured the quarry with its prestigious Two Stars of Excellence award. LafargeHolcim’s operations in the country extend over 350 sites across 43 states. Its aim is to ‘help build better communities with innovative solutions that deliver structural integrity and eco-efficiency.’

US: A court in South Carolina has ruled against a dismissal motion submitted by Lafarge North America, Argos USA and six other manufacturers of ready-mix concrete which stand accused of fixing prices, rigging project bids and allocating territories and customers amongst themselves. Class Action Reporter has stated that the defendants asserted that the complainants, who claim to have suffered injury by the alleged conspiracy, have failed to provide actionable facts pertaining to the role of each accused party, the duration of the purported anti-competitive behaviour and its geographic scope including the court’s jurisdiction. Lafarge further contested that the Statute of Limitations precludes its prosecution, because it ceased concrete trading in the region in 2011. The court concluded that the claim contained sufficient fact for further examination to be reasonably expected to reveal evidence of an illegal agreement. It will hear the case against all defendants.

US: Lafarge North America, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, has officially opened the upgrade to its Ravena cement plant in New York. The upgrade work took three years at a reported cost of US$300m.

“By modernising the plant, we have transformed it into an efficient, competitive and state-of-the-art facility that will allow us to meet the growing needs of our customers and remain a strong partner to the community for the foreseeable future,” said John Stull, chief executive officer (CEO) US Cement, LafargeHolcim. He added that the plant has supplied cement for high profile projects, including the Tappan Zee bridge reconstruction and One World Trade Center Memorial.

Upgrade work focused on building a new clinker production line to modernise the previously wet process plant. Following the work the plant now has a clinker production capacity of 2Mt/yr with improved emissions levels and higher operational performance.

US: Lafarge North America plans to lay off an estimated 40 workers at his Joppa cement plant in Illinois. The move follows a decision to shut down one of the plants two kilns due to poor demand, according to WSIL-TV. The announcement follows the cement producer’s decision to scrap its expansion at the plant in May 2016. It previously said that no job losses were anticipated.

US: Lafarge North America has scrapped plan to expand its Joppa cement plant in Illinois. One of the two kilns at the plant was shut in 2012. However, the company announced it was restarting this kiln and planning on building a third kiln in 2015, according to the Paducah Sun newspaper. The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim blamed the cancellation on poor market recovery for its products. Production is expected to continue at the cement plant using its existing two kilns. No job losses are anticipated.
