Kenya: At least 99kg of heroin and cocaine worth US$2.3m were destroyed at the Bamburi Cement Mombasa plant, at the request of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Kenya, according to a social media post from the company. Bamburi Cement’s kiln was selected as the most secure method for incinerating the seized narcotics.
“Our kilns co-process waste and convert it into energy, reducing CO₂ emissions and supporting a clean circular economy. We are proud to contribute to this public interest solution that has eliminated a threat posed to our fellow Kenyans,” said Sustainability & Geocycle Director Jane Wangari.
Bamburi Cement has previously collaborated with multi-agency teams to dispose of over 5000t of hazardous waste imported into the country at its Mombasa facility.
Mombasa Cement to build 36MW wind farm at Vipingo plant
26 January 2017Kenya: Mombasa Cement is preparing to build a 36MW wind farm by its plant in Vipingo. Power from the unit will be used for the company’s cement plant and sold to Kenya Power, according to the Daily Nation newspaper. The project will consist of 12 3MW turbines and it is estimated to cost US$2.5m. The cement plant is also planning upgrades at a cost of US$72m.
Bamburi signs partnership for solid waste treatment
20 February 2014Kenya: Bamburi Cement and the Mombasa County Government have entered into a US$55.6m partnership to develop a solid waste management system for the Mombasa county.
The deal will see Bamburi finance a feasibility study and provide equipment to boost the Mombasa waste management capacity. Most of the waste will be used to generate alternative fuel for the manufacture of cement.
