Namibia: The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), a South African development finance institution, says it would like to increase its share in Ohorongo Cement. It has made the statement in response to the acquisition of a majority stake in the cement producer by Singapore’s International Cement Group in March 2019, according to the Namibian Sun newspaper.

The IDC owns a 14% stake in Ohorongo Cement. It says it is committed to Ohorongo Cement and that it wants to support Namibia's indigenisation programme through local ownership. It is talking to other shareholders including the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN), which owns an 11% stake in Ohorongo. The DBN has also expressed concerns on the takeover by International Cement Group.

Namibia: The Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) says it will consult the government about its minority stake in Ohorongo Cement following the purchase of a majority share in the cement producer by Singapore’s International Cement Group. International Cement Group acquired a 69.8% share in Ohorongo Cement from Germany’s Schwenk Namibia in March 2019, according to the Namibian newspaper. The DBN said that it originally invested in Ohorongo Cement to promote economic development in Namibia.

Singapore: International Cement Group is planning to build new cement plants in Central Asia, Africa and South-east Asia to complement China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The company, formerly known as Compact Metal Industries, has held a ceremony to mark its listing at the Singapore Stock Exchange, according to the Business Times Singapore newspaper.

The company holds a 65% stake in a 1.2Mt/yr cement plant in Tajikistan. This unit’s production capacity was recently upgraded to 1.35Mt/yr. In mid-2018 it said it was building a new plant in Kazakhstan. This project is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2019. In late 2018 the group said it had failed to buy a majority stake in a partially-built cement plant at Salamanga in Mozambique. In March 2019 the group agreed to buy a majority stake in Namibia’s Ohorongo Cement from Schwenk Namibia for US$104m.

Namibia: Whale Rock Cement says it plans to start exporting cement to countries in Africa following the accreditation of its Cheetah Cement products with the Namibia Standards Institute and the South African Bureau of Standards. It hopes to send its exports to Mozambique, Congo and Ivory Coast, according to the Namibian Sun newspaper. The cement producer started producing clinker at its 1.2Mt/yr integrated plant near Otjiwarongo in late 2018. Prior to this it was importing clinker from Egypt.

Namibia: Singapore’s International Cement Group has acquired a 100% stake in Schwenk Namibia for US$104m. Schwenk Namibia owns a 69.8% share of Ohorongo Cement and a 100% share of alternative fuel supplier EFF, according to the Business Times newspaper. The deal is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval. Previously, a subsidiary of International Cement agreed to build a cement plant Almaty, Kazakhstan as part of a joint venture.

Namibia: China’s Tianjin Cement Industry Design & Research Institute (TDI) has successfully ignited the kiln on a new 1.2Mt/yr production line at Whale Rock Cement’s plant near Otjiwarongo. The Chinese equipment supplier says that the line was started on 25 December 2018, 58 days ahead of the contracted start date. The project officially began in late 2017. The US$350m plant was originally scheduled to be commissioned in late October 2018, according to local media.

Namibia: Ohorongo Cement officially inaugurated its 5MW photovoltaic solar plant this week at its head offices at Farm Sargber near Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region.

Speaking at the opening, Tom Alweendo, Minister of Mines and Energy said that solar electricity generation had grown so exponentially in Namibia since the inception of the Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariff programme in 2014.

Namibia: Whale Rock Cement plans to commission its new plant near Otjiwarongo at the end of October 2018. The 1.2Mt/yr unit had an investment of US$350m, according to the Xinhua News Agency. Cement from the plant will be sold under the Cheetah brand. The project is a joint venture between China's Asia-Africa Business Management and local partners.

Namibia: Kaptau Packaging has signed a deal with Ohorongo Cement to supply 1.2 million bags by the end of August 2018. The agreement is part of a five-year deal, according to the Namibian Sun newspaper. Kaptau Packaging, a local company, manufactures bags in Oshakati.

Namibia: Ohorongo Cement’s captive 5MWAC solar plant is preparing to start commercial operation by the end of June 2018. The unit is equipped with approximately 20,000 crystalline silicon modules mounted on a tracking system and an installed capacity of 6.5MWDC for an output of 5MWAC, according to the Daily Observer newspaper. Once it starts commercial operation it will provide an estimated 14GWhr/yr to the cement plant.

Investors have reached financial close in the project. The site has been developed and built by Germany’s SunEQ and its local partner Hungileni. Local financial partners also include Namibia Infrastructure Finance. Gildemeister Energy Solutions also worked on the project.
