Nigeria: Dangote Cement has recorded earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation of US$293m in the first quarter of 2020, up by 2.2% year-on-year from US$287m in the first quarter of 2019. Sales rose by 3.8% to US$639m from US$616m. Cement sales volumes fell by 0.6% amid a total suspension of South African operations from late March 2020 due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Dangote Cement chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Puchercos said, “2020 started strongly, with growth across the board despite the early effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are closely monitoring all markets according to the guidance provided by the authorities in each country. We continue to provide superior services and deliver high quality products to our customers.”

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa says it is preparing for reduced revenue in the second quarter of 2020 due to subdued activity in the construction sector caused by lockdown measures related to the coronavirus outbreak. Its revenue grew by 10% year-on-year to US$164m in the first quarter of 2020 from US$149m in the same period in 2019. Its profit after tax more than doubled to US$20.8m. First quarter sales were driven by growing cement sales that compensated for slowing aggregate and concrete sales. Managing director Khaled El Dokani said that despite, short-term disruptions due to the epidemic, the subsidiary of LafargeHolcim was confident of the resilience of its business.

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa has appointed Adebode Adefioye as its new chairman with effect from 4 June 2020. He succeeds Mobolaji Balogun, who has decided to retire from the role.

Adefioye, a non-executive director of the company, is the chairman of the board finance and strategy committee, chairman of the board property optimisation committee and a member of the nominations, governance and remuneration committee. He has also served on the statutory audit committee and the risk management and ethics committee.

Adefioye holds over 32 years experience in different industries and is a graduate of the University of Lagos with Masters of Science degree. He is a member of the Institute of Directors and the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria. He was appointed to the board of directors in late 2012 and currently sits on the boards of Wema Bank and Eterna. He also resides on the governing council of Bank Directors Association in Nigeria. Adefioye will step down from all board committees of Lafarge Africa on assumption of the role as chairman of the board.

Balogun has worked for Lafarge Africa for over 15 years, having joined the board in 2005. He served for the first 10 years as a non-executive director and was appointed chairman in mid-2015.

Nigeria: BUA Cement has donated 350 bags of rice and 22,500 facemasks to people affected by the coronavirus outbreak in Okpella, Okpekpe and Ibie, Edo State and Elele, Rivers State. BUA Cement CEO Yusuf Binji said, “As a responsible organisation, we understand the plight of our host communities. We believe this donation will go a long way to ameliorate the negative effect of the lock¬down.”

As of 20 April 2020, Nigeria had 627 coronavirus cases – 21 fatal.

Nigeria: Switzerland-based LafargeHolcim subsidiary Lafarge Africa has donated three of its facilities - along with personal protective equipment (PPE) - for use to isolate and treat coronavirus patients. Lafarge Africa chief executive officer (CEO) Khaled El Dokani said, “Our intervention will relieve healthcare facilities in Lagos and in our host communities, to support those fighting COVID-19.”

In addition, Lafarge Africa stepped up its water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) initiatives in its host communities.

Nigeria: Dangote Cement, Africa’s leading cement manufacturer, is seeking to raise up to US$260m in fresh funds from the bond market under its US$780m Debt Issuance Programme. The investor presentation document prepared by the company was themed ‘Building Prosperity in Africa.’

Nigeria: A Dangote Cement truck overturned on the Epe Bridge in Lagos, landing on a taxi and killing six of its seven passengers. Punch Metro newspaper has reported the cause of the incident was a brake failure due to a mechanical fault with the truck. It is unknown whether the driver was operating illegally. The survivor is receiving hospital treatment.

Nigeria: Dangote Cement has donated cement worth US$270,000 to the Lagos State government to support the ongoing reconstruction process at the Abule-Ado site in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government area, which was affected by a deadly pipeline explosion on 15 March 2020. The donation was made by the chairman of Dangote Cement, Aliko Dangote, represented by the company’s Independent Non-Executive Director Emmanuel Ikazoboh.

Nigeria: BUA Group has announced its acquisition of a majority shareholding in PW Nigeria, one of Nigeria’s leading construction, engineering and mining companies. According to BUA, this was necessary to further deepen its investments in the infrastructure business in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking on the acquisition, Abdul Samad Rabiu, executive chairman of BUA Group, said, “This acquisition marks the beginning of the next phase of our medium term strategy for our infrastructure business following the completion of the consolidation of our cement arm, BUA Cement in January 2020. BUA’s acquisition of majority holdings in PW Nigeria provides a prime opportunity to increase our investments in the entire value chain of the cement, mining and construction sector. We believe PW Nigeria, with its solid experience in building dams, roads, airports, water projects and other infrastructure projects in Nigeria, provided a strong value proposition too difficult to ignore.”

Nigeria: Dangote Cement has shared plans for the installation of a fifth production line at its 13.3Mt/yr integrated Obajana plant in Obajana, Kogi State, that will raise the plant’s capacity to 16.Mt/yr. Business Day newspaper has reported that the upgrade will be a jointly private and public project aimed at ‘boosting the economy and creating jobs for the unemployed youth,’ with tax reliefs and other incentives available to investors. Dangote Cement executive director Edwin Devakumar said during a visit of the Nigerian Minister of State for Mining and Steel Development Samson Ogar that the company ‘will leverage on the state’s support.’
