Cemex implements new coronavirus protocols

Mexico: Cemex has implemented more than 50 new safety protocols to minimise the risk of coronavirus spread in its cement, ready-mix concrete and aggregates operations. Cemex said that it recognised ‘the importance of the construction industry in supporting the maintenance and service of essential infrastructure required to face the pandemic and contribute to the economy,’ and would resume or continue all possible operations in line with the regulations of the countries in which it operates.

“The health and safety of its employees is the company’s number one priority,” said Cemex. “Among the protocols implemented are the company’s Personal Hygiene Protocol, Physical Distancing Protocol, Screening at Workplace Protocol, Cemex Truck Drivers Protocol, Workplace Cleaning Protocol, and Commuting To and From Work Protocol,” all developed in line with advice from national and international bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO).
Cemex has leveraged its Cemex Go digital platform to limit physical contact and ‘protect employees, customers and suppliers.’

Cemex resumes Colombian production

14 April 2020

Colombia: Mexico-based Cemex has announced the resumption of operations at its 2.8Mt/yr Caracolito plant in Ibagué, Tolima Department on 13 April 2020. Noticias Financieras News has reported that Cemex Colombia will resume the supply of its products to ‘infrastructure and public works that cannot be suspended, as well as for emergency care projects and road projects.

Cemex will have to wait for the Colombian government to lift its coronavirus lockdown to restart supplies to customers.

Cemex resumes operations in Mexico

Mexico: Cemex has announced that will resume operations in Mexico, just hours after announcing that it would halt all operations in the country. The turnaround was due to new government guidelines regarding essential business operations during the coronavirus outbreak.

"In accordance with the technical guidelines published today in the official Mexican gazette, the company will resume operations in Mexico to support the development and the economy of the country during the COVID-19 contingency," said Cemex in a statement on 6 April 2020. Earlier the same day it had announced that it would halt all Mexican operations until at least 30 April 2020.

CANACEM suspends all Mexican cement production

02 April 2020

Mexico: The National Cement Chamber (CANACEM) has suspended the activity of all member producers with cement plants in the country following the government’s national industrial shutdown in response to coronavirus. The suspension will last until 30 April 2020, during which time employees will draw their full salaries. CANACEM President Jaime Rocha Font said, "It is necessary to carry out technical, operational and administrative actions in each of the plants whose activity will be suspended in order to be able to completely stop operations in a safe and technically orderly manner.” Companies have until 10 April 2020 to complete the shutdown.

Cement dispatches to public and private works, as well as to the country’s 62,000 cement retailers, will proceed until 3 April 2020.

Dalmia closes 26.5Mt/yr of production capacity overnight

27 March 2020

India: Dalmia Bharat has suspended operations across its entire integrated cement production apparatus, equalling 26.5Mt/yr capacity, as of 26 March 2020. The move is a response to a government ordnance of 25 March 2020 imposing a 21-day lockdown on the whole of India due to the coronavirus. The company will implement the closure ‘until further notice,’ according to Mint News.

Dalmia Bharat CEO and managing director Mahendra Singhi said, “While cement production is continuous in nature and the plants have requisite permission from both the state and the central governments to operate with minimum employees during the lockdown, Dalmia Bharat will only carry out mandatory activities required for safety and security of the plants in the larger interest of its staff.”

Coronavirus had claimed 13 lives in India on 27 March 2020.

Siguaney cement plant re-enters production

26 November 2019

Cuba: Following 18 months of reduced operations in which time maintenance and repairs on its grey cement kilns were carried out, Corporacion Cementos Cubanos’ 0.7Mt/yr Siguaney plant is once more fully operational across its four wet lines. Esmerk has reported that the company hopes to re-open its white cement kiln at the nearest possible date.

ECEBOL Caracollo cement plant to start commercial operation in August 2019

12 June 2019

Bolivia: Empresa Publica Productiva Cementos de Bolivia’s (ECEBOL) at Caracollo in Oruro will start commercial operation in August 2019. The US$306m plant will have a production capacity of 1.3Mt/yr, according to Radio FM Bolivia. A consortium of Sacyr, Imasa and Polysius have worked on the project.

Terex Washing Systems invests in North American sales and operations

31 January 2019

US/Canada: Terex says that its Terex Washing Systems (TWS) brand is investing in its North American sales and operational teams. Following the spend it will have 20 regional partners via 50 service depots, 60 mobile trucks and 100 technicians in the region.

“Our new enhanced levels of sales and service and support will build upon momentum gained in recent years as we continue to focus on serving customers, with world-class washing equipment solutions that add commercial value to their operations,” said TWS’ director Oliver Donnelly.

TWS manufactures products for the mineral washing sector for aggregate, recycling, mining and industrial sand industries.

Cemex Philippines resumes operations of both kilns at Barangay cement plant

13 December 2018

Philippines: Cemex Philippines has resumed operation of both kilns at its Barangay cement plant in Cebu. It also said that it would cancel the planned closure of its Davao terminal and a temporary layoff of workers, according to the Manila Standard newspaper. The cement producer said it made the decision to resume its Davao operations as it continued to cooperate with APO Land & Quarry, which is the company’s principal raw material provider, and the national and local authorities to address the situation in Naga City, Cebu. The company’s decision to scale back its operations in late November 2018 followed a suspension of APO Land and Quarry after a landslide.
