Angola: Fabrica de Cimento do Kwanza Sul plant may be forced to shutdown on 1 November 2017 due to a lack of Light Fuel Oil (LFO). The plant’s operational director Edmundo Ferreira has blamed the situation on rising fuel prices, according to the Angola News Agency. The company’s management is currently neogotiating with its fuel supplier, which it says has raised the price by 260%. The plant has a workforce of 140 employees.
Semen Indonesia suspends construction of Aceh plant
18 October 2017Indonesia: Semen Indonesia Aceh has suspended construction of its Pidie cement plant in Aceh due to a land dispute. Local community leaders say they support the project but are calling for the disagreement to be resolved first to avoid problems later on, according to the Antara news agency. Locals are also waiting for environmental impact report requirements to be met. Previously, Semen Indonesia Aceh halted a plant construction project in Laweung until land issues were resolved.
PPC workers strike at Slurry cement plant
18 October 2017South Africa: Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at PPC’s Slurry cement plant in North West province have gone on strike over wages. The NUM gave the cement producer a notice to strike in mid-October 2017 and then workers started taking action on 17 October 2017. The union wants a pay rise on 12% and other benefits, but PPC has only offered 6%.
Corporacion Socialista de Cementos starts second line at Las Llanadas plant in Venezuela
17 October 2017Venezuela: The Corporacion Socialista de Cementos’ Las Llanadas plant in Trujillo has started its second production line. Following the upgrade the state-owned plant’s cement production capacity will rise to 1.35Mt/yr from 0.5Mt/yr, according to the El Mundo newspaper. The new line was built using Chinese technology.
Thomas Gruppe buys Gebr. Seibel Erwitte cement plant
16 October 2017Germany: Thomas Gruppe has purchased Portland-Zementwerke Gebr. Seibel’s cement plant at Erwitte in North Rhine-Westphalia. The deal also includes the plant’s limestone deposits. It will take over the plant on 1 January 2018. Gebr. Seibel has operated the unit since 1927.
Thomas Gruppe operates in the construction and building material sectors. It runs the Dornburger cement grinding plant in Thuringia.
Loesche supplying three mills for Egyptian Cement plant
16 October 2017Egypt: Loesche is supplying three vertical roller mills for the Egyptian Cement plant at Sohag. The scope of delivery includes a raw material mill with a capacity of 540t/hr of cement raw meal, a cement mill with an output of 350t/hr as well as a coal mill with an output of 45t/hr. The cement mill is equipped with a COPE (Compact Planetary Electric Drive) drive.
Sinoma subsidiary, the Chinese Chengdu Design & Research Institute (CDI), is the general contractor for the project. Loesche and CDI have worked together previously on projects in Egypt including ones for El Arish Cement and Beni Suef Cement.
Cruz Azul confirms US$300m upgrade plan
13 October 2017Mexico: Cruz Azul has confirmed that it plans to spend US$300m on upgrades at two of its cement plants over the next 28 months. Previously the plan was announced in late 2016. Guillermo Álvarez Cuevas told the El Economista newspaper that the cement producer intends to carry out work to increase production capacity at its Hildalgo and Oaxaca plants.
India: Orient Cement has paid US$46,000 in compensation to the families of two workers who were electrocuted at the Chittapur cement plant. The move follows tension in the local community, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. The cement producer has also agreed to offer employment to the members of both families and to grant pensions to the widows of the workers.
Libyan Cement Company inspects Benghazi cement plants
10 October 2017Libya: British consultants on behalf of the Libyan Cement Company have met with the Benghazi Mayor Abdelrahman Al-Abaar in order to help restart two cement plants in Benghazi and Hawari. Work is due to commence on removing land mines from the sites as well as an assessment of damage caused to the units from fighting that took place in 2016, according to the Libya Herald newspaper. The Libyan Cement Company announced that it was going to reopen the plants in May 2017.
Pioneer Cement signs deal to buy Galadari Cement
06 October 2017Pakistan: Pioneer Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding to buy Galadari Cement (Gulf). Galadari Cement has been building its plant at Hub Choki in Balochistan since 1998, according to the News International newspaper. The unit is 50% complete. No amount for the sale has been disclosed but it is estimated to be around US$66m.
