Refratechnik and Höganäs Borgestad start strategic agreement for supply of refractory products to Nordic countries
10 March 2021Germany/Sweden: Refratechnik Group and Sweden-based Höganäs Borgestad Group have started a strategic agreement for the supply of refractory products to customers in Nordic countries. Höganäs Borgestad customers will now have direct access to the product range and application knowledge of the Refratechnik Group. The refractory suppliers said that their arrangement, “underscores the desire of both companies for long-term, sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships; resulting in a secure supply of top-quality product for the customer.”
Germany-based Refratechnik Group operates refractory and industrial mineral businesses, with over 1900 employees in 27 locations worldwide. Sweden-based Höganäs Borgestad is the largest refractory company in the Nordic region providing installation services and refractory materials to many industries.
Refratechnik acquires Queensland Magnesia
15 January 2020Australia: German refractory producer Refratechnik has acquired Queensland Magnesia (QMAG). The acquisition adds 300,000Mt/yr of magnesium oxide to Refratechnik’s supply of raw materials. The company said, “With a common focus on performance excellence, we will deliver greater value to our customers.”
Global Cement and Concrete Association launches research network
10 October 2019UK: The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) has launched ‘Innovandi,’ a research network between industry and scientific institutions. The network intends to research the areas of process technology, including the impact of co-processing, efficiency of clinker production and implementation of CCUS/ technologies, and products. This will include the impact of clinker substitutes and alternative binders in concrete, low carbon concrete technology and improve the understanding of CO2 reduction through re-carbonation.
“Our industry is fully committed to taking action to reduce CO2 emissions. As such, Innovandi is an industry led initiative and will bring together the best minds from all corners of the cement and concrete world, academia and business. Together we will truly collaborate on a global scale and use our expertise to find new ways of working and developing effective innovations,” said Benjamin Sporton, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the GCCA.
24 companies from the cement and concrete industry, including cement and concrete manufacturers, admixture specialists and equipment suppliers, have committed to the initiative, with scientific institutions and additional companies set to join as its work begins work. These include Buzzi Unicem, Cementir Holding, Cementos Argos, Cementos Molins, Cementos Pacasmayo, Cemento Progresso, Cemex, CNBM, Chryso, CRH, Dalmia Cement, FLSmidth, Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC), GCP Applied Technologies, Mapei, HeidelbergCement, LafargeHolcim, Nesher Israel Enterprises, SCG Cement, Titan Cement, Refratechnik Cement, Sika Technology, Subote New Materials and Votorantim.
As part of the new initiative, the GCCA also intends to establish an annual Innovandi global conference to promote collaboration on innovation and research in the sector.
Refratechnik forms joint venture with Haicheng Guotian Mining and Yingkou Jinlong Refractories
29 October 2018China: Germany’s Refratechnik has signed a joint venture contract with Haicheng Guotian Mining and Yingkou Jinlong Refractories for the production of high-grade caustic calcined magnesia (CCM) and dead burned magnesia (DBM) at a new plant at Pailou near Haicheng in Liaoning. Yingkou Jinlong Refractories is a long-standing partner of Refratechnik in China and Haicheng Guotian Mining is an existing CCM and DBM producer in Haicheng with long-term secure access to magnesite ore.
Construction of the new plant has started and production at the site is scheduled to begin in 2019. The unit will manufacture 0.1Mt/yr of DBM and over 0.1Mt/yr of CCM. The joint venture is intended to secure supply for Refratechnik’s worldwide refractory production and to diversify and strengthen its international industrial minerals business.
Bernd Scheubel retires from Refratechnik
18 July 2018Germany: Bernd Scheubel retired from Refratechnik at the start of May 2018.
He started his career at the technical centre of Krupp Polysius (TKIS) in New Beckum. After five years working there as a mineralogist he joined Refratechnik in 1987, starting as a sales manager for South America. In 1998 he was appointed a member of executive management of Refratechnik Cement in Goettingen. In 2003 Scheubel joined the management board of Refratechnik Holding at Ismaning near Munich, the position he held until he retired.
The main focus of his work was the expansion of the international refractory business of Refratechnik in the Americas and East Asia, mainly in China. In addition he held positions at the executive boards of the World Refractory Association and the European Refractory Association.
Germany: Stefan Puntke has become the managing director of Refratechnik Cement, replacing Wolfgang Tabbert. Puntke’s previous role has been taken by Christian Meyre, effective from 1 June 2016. The announcement was made at the 14th REFRA-Kolloquium held on 31 May to 3 June 2016 in Berlin.
Tabbert has worked for the company for more than 30 years, five of them as sales manager and 13 years as managing director. He will continue to act as consultant for Refratechnik Cement for a period to ensure a smooth transfer of responsibilities.
Meyre holds management experience in the international cement industry, particularly in North America.
Refratechnik Group takes over Burton
17 September 2013Germany: The Refratechnik Group, a manufacturer of ceramic refractory products to the cement and various other industries, has acquired the facilities of Burton GmbH & Co. KG located in Melle, near Osnabrück, Germany. Burton will continue business operations under the name Refratechnik Ceramics GmbH with immediate effect, maintaining the jobs at the Melle site.
As a result of this strategic takeover, Refratechnik Ceramics will become a market leader and global supplier of refractory products for industrial furnaces in the ceramics industry. In this field, the product range covers wall, roof and car systems as well as furniture for tunnel kilns, in which products such as refractory ceramics, roof tiles, sanitary ware and other ceramic products are fired. Burton Kiln Furniture in Hungary, which was also taken over by Refratechnik Ceramics, primarily produce cast refractory materials.
Refratechnik Group says that Burton's industrial customer base and product portfolio is a contribution to Refratechnik's constant expansion of its business operations, in particular in the fields of primary aluminium and waste incineration.
With the acquisition of Burton, the Refratechnik Group now has 18 sites on four continents. Nine of these are state-of-the-art production facilities for burnt, shaped, and unshaped refractory products. Two other sites are in the raw materials business.
