Norway: SLB Capturi has reached mechanical completion of the carbon capture unit at Heidelberg Materials' cement plant in Brevik. The unit includes the carbon capture system, compression system, heat integration system, intermediate storage, and loadout facilities. The plant is now ready for testing and commissioning. The carbon capture plant is designed to capture up to 0.4Mt/yr of CO₂ from one production line at the cement plant. When operational, this world-first commercial-scale carbon capture plant at a cement plant will enable production of an amount of net-zero cement, without compromising on the product strength or quality. SLB Capturi is a joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture.

Germany: Heidelberg Materials has appointed Katharina Beumelburg as its Chief Sustainability & New Technologies Officer. She succeeds Nicola Kimm, who will leave the company on 31 August 2024. Beumelburg will take up her position on 1 October 2024.

Beumelburg joins Heidelberg Materials from SLB (formerly Schlumberger), where she has worked as the Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer since May 2021. Previously, she spent over 15 years at Siemens, Siemens Energy, and Hydrogen Europe, focusing on business strategy and excellence as well as energy systems. She has studied Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and holds a PhD in Robotics and Automation from the University of Stuttgart.

US: SLB has launched EcoShield, a geopolymer-based well cement product. The company, also known as Schlumberger, says that the product cuts out up to 85% of embodied CO₂ emissions compared with conventional well cementing systems because it does not use ordinary Portland cement (OPC). It also reduces transport related emissions by using locally-sourced natural materials and industrial waste streams in its composition. The company says that the cement-free system can be deployed throughout various phases of the well life cycle, including abandonment. It can also be deployed across a range of field applications, including corrosive environments.

Jesus Lamas, SLB’s president of Well Construction, said “Decarbonising the well construction process while ensuring safety and performance standards is critical to our industry’s pathway to net zero.” He added “The cement-free EcoShield system is a breakthrough that delivers industry-standard zonal isolation capabilities while significantly minimising impacts from upstream oil and gas production.”

EcoShield has been tested by Pioneer Natural Resources in the Permian Basin on an 18-well field testing campaign and its use is ongoing.
