Shree Cement to invest US$646m in new cement capacity and solar power plants

15 September 2021

India: Shree Cement is planning to launch three projects with a total value of US$646m. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that US$476m-worth of the sum will go towards establishing a new 3.8Mt/yr integrated cement plant at Nawalgarh in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district. The producer will invest a further US$102m in establishing a grinding plant in Purulia district, West Bengal, to take advantage of ‘favourable’ demand. Lastly, it will invest US$68m in installing solar power plants at ‘various’ cement plants across India.

Shree Cement said “The company has committed to maximising the use of clean energy in its operations. Setting up of the above solar power plants will enhance the proportion of clean energy usage in the total energy consumption of the company.”

Shrinath Savoor appointed as chief sustainability officer of Shree Cement

India: Shree Cement has appointed Shrinath Savoor as its chief sustainability officer. Savoor trained at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He later worked for Holtec before becoming the Joint President for Strategy and Business Development at Shree Cement in 2009.

Shree Cement ready to build new grinding plant in Bengal

India: Shree Cement is ready to start building a 3Mt/yr grinding plant at Purulia in Bengal. The project has an investment of around US$80m, according to the Times of India newspaper. The cement producer has already purchased the land for the unit and intends to start work on building it from August 2021. It will be the company’s first production plant in the state.

Shree Cement to commission Pune cement grinding plant in September 2021

India: Shree Cement is on track to commission its 3.0Mt/yr cement grinding plant at Patas in Pune, Maharashtra in September 2021. The plant was originally scheduled for commissioning in late 2020 but this was delayed due to Covid-19 led-disruption. The unit has had an investment of around US$80m and it will source clinker from a group site in Karnataka. The plant is Shree Cement’s first in western India.

Shree Cement’s annual results show sales and profit growth in 2021 financial year

India: Shree Cement’s full-year consolidated net sales rose by 5% year-on-year to US$1.85bn in the 2021 financial year from US$1.77bn in the 2020 financial year. Its profit for the period increased by 48% to US$314m from US$212m.

Karnataka government approves Shree Cement’s Doddaballapur grinding and bagging plant plans

India: Shree Cement has received approval from the state government of Karnataka for its planned US$81.5m Doddaballapur cement grinding and bagging plant. The Hindu newspaper has reported that, when operational, the plant will employ 300 local people.

Shree Cement commences production at Cuttack grinding plant

India: Shree Cement has commenced commercial production at its 3.0Mt/yr Cuttack grinding plant in Athagarh Tehsil, Odisha. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the company officially launched the new plant on 15 March 2021.

ISGEC Heavy Engineering to install two waste heat recovery units at Shree Cement’s Raipur cement plant

08 March 2021

India: ISGEC Heavy Engineering has won a contract for a double waste heat recovery (WHR) unit installation at Shree Cement’s Raipur cement plant. The Business Standard newspaper has reported that the supplier will install one unit on the plant’s pre-heater exhaust, and the other on the 10,500t/day kiln’s cooler exhaust.

Industrial and green energy boilers business head Vinod Luthra said, “This is indeed a very prestigious order for us and we thank Shree Cement for once again showing confidence in ISGEC's capabilities. This is the second project that ISGEC will be successfully setting up for Shree Cement."

Shree Cement reports nine-month sales drop in 2021 financial year

01 February 2021

India: Shree Cement has recorded consolidated net sales of US$1.27bn in the first nine months of its 2021 financial year (1 April 2020 – 31 March 2021), down by 2% year-on-year from US$1.29bn in the corresponding period of its 2019 financial year. The group’s net profit increased by 52% to US$204m from US$138m.

The company is currently working on a 6Mt/yr addition to its grinding capacity, consisting of two new grinding plants, in Athagarh Tehsil, Odisha, and Patas, Maharashtra. The facilities had been scheduled for completion in the first half of the 2021 financial year.

Shree Cement supports war veterans with cement donations to families

08 December 2020

India: Shree Cement plans to mark Vijay Diwas, the Indian commemoration day for the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, with free donations of cement for the families of armed forces personnel who died in battle between 1999 and 2019. Under the Naman scheme, the family or the next of kin of a deceased veteran will be given free cement to build a house on a plot of land up to around 370m2, according to the Times of India newspaper. The cement can be obtained in person from any of Shree Cement's manufacturing facilities spread across India.
