Cemcor installs IBM Maximo Application Suite asset management software

20 September 2023

UK: Cemcor has migrated its existing SAP asset management system over to IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS). Cemcor says that IBM MAS offers a 360°, real-time view of its operations across multiple sites, enabling the company to resolve maintenance challenges, optimise its assets, increase the lifespan of essential equipment and remove inefficiencies. Peacock Engineering delivered the new system and will continue to provide support services with the platform.

Peacock Engineering’s chief operating officer Matt Deadman said “We’re thrilled to be working with Cemcor over the course of the next three years. We have already completed the first stage of our change programme with the successful delivery of its new enterprise asset management system. MAS is one of IBM’s sustainability software solutions. It will provide Cemcor with a clearer view of its assets, which include heavy plant and processing equipment, and help in mitigating the current challenges found in its maintenance programme.”

GEA trials carbon capture technology at Phoenix Zementwerke cement plant

18 September 2023

Germany: Engineering company GEA has installed a carbon capture pilot plant at the Phoenix Zementwerke cement plant in Beckum, North Rhine-Westphalia. The supplier will now conduct testing over ‘several’ months, but said that it is confident that the cement plant is suitable for an installation to capture over 90% of its CO2 emissions. GEA’s carbon capture systems run on energy from waste heat recovery, with minimal to zero extra electrical input.

Phoenix Zementwerke managing director Marcel Gustav Krogbeumker said “We consider carbon capture a very exciting technology. Thanks to GEA's decades of experience in emissions control, I am very positive that together we can develop and implement a solution."

GCC orders pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for Odessa cement plant expansion

31 August 2023

US: GCC has ordered pyroprocessing equipment from ThyssenKrupp Polysius for the expansion of its Odessa cement plant in Texas. The upgrade will more than double the plant’s capacity to 1.9Mt/yr, and reduce its CO2 emissions by 13%. Contractor H&M Construction says that the project will be the third on which it has collaborated on design and construction.

H&M Vice President Casey Rushing said “H&M is proud to have the opportunity to serve GCC as its design-builder on this great project. Block-Lite to retrofit CO2-curing system at Flagstaff concrete block plant

21 August 2023

US: Block-Lite plans to install a system to cure concrete blocks using direct air capture (DAC)-sourced CO2 at its Flagstaff, Arizona, concrete block plant. The upgrade will implement CarbonBuilt’s low-CO2 concrete production technology and AirCapture’s modular DAC technology, across five or six capture units. Direct air capture will thus remove 500 – 600t/yr of CO2 from the atmosphere, while process changes will reduce CO2 emissions from the Flagstaff plant by over 2000t/yr. The project has attracted fundraising from the 4 Corners Carbon Coalition (4CCC), with a goal of US$50,000. The Arizon Daily Sun newspaper has reported that Block-Lite plans to supply its first shipment of low-CO2 blocks to a 50-home development by Habitat for Humanity in Flagstaff.

FLSmidth raises sales in first half of 2023

15 August 2023

Denmark: FLSmidth’s sales were US$1.82bn during the first half of 2023, up by 28% year-on-year from US$1.43bn in the first half of 2022. Its earnings before interest, taxation and amortisation (EBITA) fell by 7%, to US$83.1m from US$89.3m. The supplier recorded a new order intake worth US$1.64m, down by 14% from US$1.9m. New cement orders fell by 33% amid reduced demand, especially for FLSmidth’s product offering. In line with its de-risking strategy, FLSmidth continued to accept only those product orders that also supported its service business. The company maintained its guidance of cement sales of US$879m and an EBITA margin of 5.5 – 6.5% for the full-year 2023.

CEO Mikko Keto said “We have maintained the strong momentum on our key transformation efforts during the second quarter of 2023. While we have continued to progress on our MissionZero agenda, our safety performance has been unsatisfactory and mitigating actions have been taken.” Keto continued “While our cement business remains on target for the full year, its short-to-mid-term market outlook has deteriorated. Consequently, continued organisational rightsizing is required to preserve profitability. Going into the second half of the year we remain positive, with a continued strong focus on executing our core transformation efforts.”
