India: ACC’s Chaibasa cement plant in Jharkhand has received its first instalment of fly ash for use in cement production from Vedanta Aluminium subsidiary Vedanta Jharsuguda. Global Cement News previously reported that Vedanta Aluminium had been seeking a cement industry fly ash and bauxite residue buyer for a long-term collaborative partnership in July 2021.

In the 2022 financial year, Vedanta Aluminium supplied 190,000t of fly ash to Indian cement producers.

US: Cementos Argos subsidiary Argos Florida Cement has won the Slag Cement Association (SCA)’s Durability and Infrastructure awards at its 2022 Sustainable Concrete Project of the Year Awards. The producer won the awards for its supply of slag cement to two projects in Florida in 2021. Its involvement in the American Bridge Company’s SR 679 Pinellas Bayway Bridge – Structure E replacement won it the Durability award, while its involvement in Superior Paving’s State Road 52 realignment. Argos Florida Cement congratulated its customers, who also received the awards.

Russia: The government is ‘working to establish import flows’ of building materials from Uzbekistan. Russian media sources have reported that the construction industry is also hoping to expand import partnerships with China, India, Iran and Turkey. Russian cement production reportedly continues to adequately serve the national demand for cement.

India: JK Cement subsidiary Jaykaycem (Central) has secured a contract for the supply of cement for Rail Vikas Nigam's construction of a new line on the West Central Railway network between Devendra Nagar and Puraina in Madhya Pradesh. The line will be 50km in length.

US: Argos USA has agreed to sell a total of 23 US ready-mix concrete batching plants to Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete for US$93m. 18of the plants are situated in North Carolina and the remainder in Southwest Florida. The El Colombiano newspaper has reported that the deal includes a five-year cement supply agreement for all 23 plants. Cementos Argos said that the divestment is part of its plan to divest assets in suburban markets or that are not already integrated into its production and logistics chain.

Germany/Nigeria: Germany-based Kreisel is sending a RDG 2000 type self cleaning rotary valve for the eventual use by client at a cement plant in Nigeria. The product weighs nearly 25t and has material flow rates of up to 570t/hr. The supplier says it is one of the largest self-cleaning rotary valve products that it provides. Such products are used to discharge typically wet or sticky bulk materials with a constant volume flow rate.

Canada: Lafarge Canada is supplying its ECOPact reduced-CO₂ concrete to contractor PCL for its construction of the upcoming Genesee power plant in Alberta.

Lafarge North America president and general manager Prez Skiba said "The original concrete proposed was already a low carbon design, but we knew we could take it further. We brought in further emissions reductions with our ECOPact design, and we were able to reduce embodied CO₂ by an additional 20%. That's 20% over and above the original design, which already offered a 20% reduction. The combined 36% CO₂ reduction is equivalent to the energy used by 70 houses in a year."

Germany: Vecoplan Group has recorded its highest ever new order intake of Euro180m in 2021, up by 60%. The company said that its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the year also set a company record.

CFO Michael Lambert said “Internationalisation is picking up speed. In line with this, we are implementing new sales and service centres throughout the world. Additional locations in various countries and regions are being planned.” He added “In 2022, we will be putting the spotlight on our digitalisation strategy and investing several million euros in software and hardware.”

CEO Werner Berens added a note of caution: “In spite of the good prospects for the new year, supply chains will continue to be disrupted by global factors like supply bottlenecks, raw material shortages and logistics problems. We too must show that we are able to deal with these big challenges.”

Senegal: SOCOCIM Industries, a subsidiary of France-based Vicat, has signed a contract with France-based Fives Group for an upgrade to its Rufisque cement plant in Dakar. Under the contract, Fives Group will supply a new 6500t/day kiln line for the 3.5Mt/yr plant. The supplier said that the line will be optimised for alternative fuel (AF) substitution. It said that the companies share mutual trust, 200 years of history and a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the cement industry.

Sri Lanka: Tokyo Cement has commissioned its new 0.45Mt/yr cement terminal at the Port of Colombo in Western Province. The company invested US$12.3m in the facility. It is equipped with three 6000t cement silos. The Daily News newspaper has reported that it will increase the company’s total import capacity to over 1Mt/yr from 0.6Mt/yr. Tokyo Cement says that this will ensure an uninterrupted supply of cement to customers in Western Province.

The cement producer also started work on a 1Mt/yr upgrade project at its Trincomalee plant in November 2021. The work is scheduled for completion in early 2023. Once finished the cement producer will have a total production capacity of 4Mt/yr.
