Cemex receives four Wildlife Habitat Council awards
11 June 2024North America: The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) has recognised Cemex’s conservation efforts in Mexico and the US with awards for four of its projects. These included its restoration of desert habitats at Cerro Jardín, Xoyatla and Coayuca in Atotonilco, Mexico. Cemex said that all of the projects advance its Future in Action strategy of sustainable excellence through circularity, climate action and water and biodiversity management, in line with becoming a net zero company by 2050.
CalPortland joins Wildlife Habitat Council
13 August 2021North America: US-based CalPortland has become a corporate member of the Wildlife Habitat Council. The council manages habitats to support sustainable ecosystems and the communities surrounding them. The Japan-based Taiheiyo Cement subsidiary says that the move formalises its commitment to integrating biodiversity and conservation action into its sustainability efforts.
President and chief executive officer Allen Hamblen said "Our membership with the Wildlife Habitat Council provides a unique opportunity to take corporate sustainability goals and objectives and translate them into tangible, on-the-ground actions which ensure a sustainable environment for the next generation."
US: The Wildlife Habitat Council has named Cemex USA the winner of the Corporate Conservation Leadership Award 2020. The award signifies “an exemplary corporate commitment to biodiversity and conservation education, and meaningful alignments with global conservation objectives.”
Director of Sustainability Vicente Saiso said, “We are privileged to receive the Corporate Conservation Leadership Award from the Wildlife Habitat Council. This recognition is testimony to our successful efforts and fosters our commitment to continue embedding sustainability in every aspect of our operations. To date, we have achieved certification for 30 programmes and community environmental initiatives in our operations around the world, with the highest standards of environmental conservation and biodiversity restoration.”
Projects include collaborations in the US and further afield with the California State Wildlife Action Plan, the Friends of Verde River Cooperative Invasive Plant Management Plan, BirdLife International, the El Carmen Nature Reserve Action Programme and a black bear research initiative, as well as the Mexican Strategy for Chihuahuan Grasslands Conservation, the Dominican Republic National Annual Plan and Panama's Alliance for a Million Hectares.
Cementos Argos Newberry plant and Atlanta grinding plant win WHC Conservation Certificates
15 January 2020US: The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) has awarded Conservation Certificates to Cementos Argos’ 1.5Mt/yr integrated Newberry plant in Florida and 0.6Mt/yr Atlanta grinding plant in Georgia. Cementos Argos has installed a bat roost at the Newberry plant and planted bee and butterfly gardens with bird boxes for year-round resident bluebirds. The company said that the certification signals its ‘long-term commitment to managing quality habitats for wildlife.’
