South Africa: Bowman International has launched Bowman Split Bearings South Africa to deliver the manufacturer’s high-load capacity split roller bearings to the South African and African markets.

Managing Director Paul Mitchell said “There are several heavy-side industries in South Africa and Africa that struggle with the detrimental effects of bearing failure. Our new associates – directors Gary Mayer and Leon Van den Berg – will support businesses in these areas to reduce downtime by specifying the Bowman Advanced Roller Bearing, which is specifically designed for high-load applications.”

Germany: Flender and Schaeffler have launched the Schaeffler Modular Adaptable Returnable Transport (SMART) Box, a packaging system for bearings. Flender says that the reusable box reduces waste by replacing disposable packaging.

Chief executive officer Andreas Evertz said, “Over the past few years, Flender has systematically minimised its own CO₂ emissions and was able to reduce them by 83% between 2015 and 2020. We want to be completely CO₂-neutral by 2030. In addition, close cooperation with customers and suppliers is another important step towards achieving complete climate neutrality. It is therefore important for us to also focus on potential savings in the supply chain. We are pleased to have a partner in Schaeffler who is also thinking in this direction. With the introduction of SMART Box for one type of gearbox, we are already reducing the use of wood as one-way packaging material by more than 100t/yr.”

US: ABB has launched its Dodge Safety Mount spherical roller bearings product with a built-in patented locking mechanism. It says that this new feature can reduce installation time by up to 75% compared to traditional products. It is mounted by tightening fasteners, instead of using a hammer and other tools. The new system also allows for simple installation and removal from the same side of the bearing. The new bearing is intended for bulk material and air handling applications.

Safety Mount bearings feature a triple-lip contact seal and corrosion-resistant flinger sealing system, which prevents contamination from entering the product during installation and operation. A labyrinth seal option is available for high-speed and high-temperature applications. The product can also be used with ABB Ability Smart Sensor.

Sweden: SKF has appointed Kent Viitanen as its President of Bearing Operation. He was previously Senior Vice President, Group People, Communication and Quality.

Viitanen joined SKF in 1988 and has held a number of business unit and factory management roles in Sweden and internationally. The Group Quality function will also be integrated into Bearing Operations. He succeeds Luc Graux, who will take up a new role within Bearing Operations. Carina Bergfelt, in addition to her role as General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Legal and Sustainability, will take on the responsibility for People and Communication.

India: Timken India, a subsidiary of the US-based Timken Company, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire ABC Bearings, a manufacturer of tapered, cylindrical and spherical roller bearings and slewing rings. The deal has been structured as a merger of ABC Bearings into Timken India. It is expected to take at least six months to complete as clearances from various authorities are sought.

"Timken is a leader in the growing Indian bearing market, and the acquisition of ABC Bearings will expand our capacity, our customer base and our locally produced product breadth," said Richard G Kyle, Timken president and chief executive officer.

US: Rexnord has launched so-called ‘smart’ PT Select Mounted Spherical Roller Bearings. These bearings are targeted for conveyor, fan and blower applications in the cement, aggregate, material and package handling industries. They also include product specific QR codes laser-etched on to each product linking to product specific information that links to a dedicated mobile application. The bearings also include engineered bearing seals to increase product life, such as standard triple lip and clearance seals to provide ingress protection against contaminants, to reduce operating temperatures at higher speeds and they feature nitrile material with protective metal shield.
