BUA Cement helps communities in Sokoto state

Nigeria: BUA Cement has donated a solar motorised borehole and medicines worth US$59,600 to eight host communities in Wamakko, Sokoto State. The company says that the efforts are aimed at alleviating the effects of local water scarcity and medicinal supply issues.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation signs memorandum of understanding to train 600 young people annually

India: Dalmia Bharat Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bokaro Steel Plant for the training of 600 new young people from Bokaro every year. Under the initiative, the partners will run short, placement-based courses at the DIKSHa (Dalmia Institute of Knowledge and Skill Harnessing) centre.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation CEO and Dalmia Bharat group head - corporate social responsibility Vishal Bhardwaj said “Since our inception in 2009, we’ve witnessed our role gradually transform from being a resource provider to a key enabler for positive change in society. While we’ve created a legacy of development and change for the better, we continue to strive to ensure that we meet newer economic and environmental needs and close wider societal gaps as much as possible.”

Holcim Philippines donates 3000 Covid-19 jabs to hospital in La Union

Philippines: Holcim Philippines has donated 3000 Covid-19 vaccinations to the Lorma Medical Center in San Fernando, La Union. The Business Mirror newspaper has reported that the company aims to help increase inoculation levels in remote parts of the province, at a time when tourism is beginning again.

Vice president and head of communications and corporate social responsibility Cara Ramirez said “We are thankful to the Lorma Medical Center for being our partner in providing vaccines to our neighbours in La Union. We are hopeful that this donation will further strengthen the province's resilience against the disease as we enter summer and tourism once again booms. While the pandemic appears to be easing, we need to remain vigilant and encourage everyone to avail themselves of the vaccines to be more protected.”

Cementos Argos’ social investment programmes benefit 368,000 Colombians in 2021

Colombia: Cementos Argos says that 368,000 people directly benefited from its social investment programmes in Colombia in 2021. During the year, the company invested US$4.56m in projects including its Hogares Saludables home improvement programme and its Via Forte road infrastructure programme. The Via Forte programme has laid 600km of road since 2017, while the Hogares Saludables programme aims to assist and improve over 10,000 homes by 2027.

Holcim to depart Russian market

29 March 2022

Russia: Switzerland-based Holcim has announced its upcoming exit from the Russian cement market in line with its corporate value ‘to operate in the most responsible manner.’ The Global Cement Directory 2022 records a total of four Holcim cement plants in the country, commanding a capacity of 9.2Mt/yr.

Holcim’s board of directors thanked all employees currently mobilising to provide shelter, essential goods and medical supplies and other support to Ukrainians.

The group had previously suspended new capital investments into the market on 15 March 2022.

Martin Engineering completes annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month donation scheme

US: Martin Engineering has completed its annual October donation programme to breast cancer charity Susan G Komen in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The supplier donated US$50 per truck vibrator and $100 per 70l air cannon sold in the period. Hot pink replaced the products’ traditional orange décor.

Vibration business development manager Susie Orlandi said “As a family-owned company of four generations with over 900 employees making up our extended family, Martin Engineering is acutely familiar with the impact breast cancer has on individuals, families, friends, colleagues and communities. This disease affects such a large number of people that just about all of us have been touched by it in some way.”She added “We’re excited to get this programme back on track after the coronavirus year in 2020.”

Cemex informs of proposed South Ferriby logistics job losses

25 August 2020

UK: Mexico-based Cemex has published plans for the redundancy of its entire South Ferriby, Lincolnshire logistics team. A total of 26 jobs are at stake. The Lincolnshire Today newspaper has reported that “it is no longer financially viable for Cemex to continue to operate the fleet at South Ferriby” following the mothballing of its 0.8Mt/yr integrated South Ferriby cement plant, according to the company. Its Rugby, Warwickshire fleet, Tilbury, Essex fleet and Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire fleet will pick up the remaining footprint.

Cemex said, “We understand that this news will be a further disappointment to the local community following the previous announcements about mothballing the South Ferriby plant. Thank you for your on-going support – we remain proud to have been such a valued part of the community. We would like to reiterate that all commitments to the local community will be maintained, including the work agreed as part of the Environment Agency flood protection project.” The South Ferriby plant was devastated by a tidal surge and resulting flooding in December 2013.

Ohorongo Cement donates medical equipment

Namibia: Ohorongo Cement – via the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust – has donated US$59,800 to the Opuwo district hospital. Ohorongo Cement general manager Rudolf Coetzee sais, “This organisation supports various projects by means of financial and humanitarian means as well as through donation.”
