Votorantim Cimentos urges use of Ethics Line to help fight against racial discrimination
05 June 2020Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has joined in the global condemnation of racism by encouraging its employees and external stakeholders to use its Ethics Line ‘in case of any lack of respect in the work environment.’ The line is open for 24 hours a day. Votorantim Cimentos reminded people that they can also speak to a member of its leadership, the Business Ethics Agency or the Ombudsman ‘with anonymity and without fear of retaliation’. Votorantim Cimentos said, “Not being racist is not enough: we need to be anti-racists. We count on you to transform Votorantim Cimentos and our society into a more respectful, humane and inclusive place.”
Eagle Cement continues community food support
04 June 2020Philippines: Eagle Cement says it will continue to provide food packages containing rice and tinned food to 18,000 families impacted upon by the coronavirus outbreak. The Manila Bulletin has reported that the provision will not end with the partial easing of the country’s lockdown but will continue until no longer needed.
Eagle Cement chairman Ramón Ang said, “Eagle Cement is committed to continue helping our partner communities where we operate, during the crisis and beyond. We were able to expand the reach of our relief operations and extend assistance to more people in need including front liners in Bulacan and to families in our community in Cebu,” where the company is planning to build a new integrated cement plant.
"The livelihoods of many residents of our communities have been affected by this pandemic and do not have the means to provide for their families. We hope that our relief operations are able to help them in addressing their crucial needs during this vulnerable time. No matter what crisis our fellow Filipinos may experience, they can rely on Eagle to support them. As a company, it is our duty to help and serve," said Ang.
Canada: Votorantim Cimentos subsidiary St Mary’s Cement has completed a 30m-high stack extension at its 0.8Mt/yr integrated St Mary’s plant in Stonetown, Ontario. The Canadian Press newspaper has reported that the upgrade is a response to increased odour complaints from Stonetown residents.
Votorantim Cimentos St Mary’s plant manager Jose Soraggi said, “Growing along with the community also means adapting along with it. We consider ourselves fortunate to maintain good relations with local residents and the town and to serve as an integral part of the business community in St Marys and Perth County. We take every opportunity to hear from our constituents and find solutions toward a positive and mutually beneficial future. The stack extension is an excellent example of that.”
Colombia: Cementos Argos has joined other Grupo Argos companies in delivering food packages and parcels to 15,200 unemployed informal construction workers under the ‘A Call to Empathy’ campaign. On 15 May 2020 the campaign has already made 8,500 deliveries in 15 cities across 15 departments of Colombia. It makes use of door-to-door drops and pick-ups from collection points and allied retailers.
Cementos Argos estimates that 100,000 families will benefit from the initiative.
Nigeria: BUA Cement has donated 350 bags of rice and 22,500 facemasks to people affected by the coronavirus outbreak in Okpella, Okpekpe and Ibie, Edo State and Elele, Rivers State. BUA Cement CEO Yusuf Binji said, “As a responsible organisation, we understand the plight of our host communities. We believe this donation will go a long way to ameliorate the negative effect of the lock¬down.”
As of 20 April 2020, Nigeria had 627 coronavirus cases – 21 fatal.
Cemex Colombia cleans the streets in Maceo
03 April 2020Colombia: Workers from Cemex Colombia are using vehicles volunteered by the company to transport water and disinfectant for use in street cleaning in Maceo, Antioquia department. Esmerk Latin American News has reported that the aim of the exercise is to combat the spread of coronavirus. Cemex Colombia has also donated food, water and antibacterial gel to communities around its 2.8Mt/yr Caracolito plant near Ibagué, Tomila department.
