Holcim Nederland Bouwmaterialen receives certification from Concrete Sustainability Council
16 July 2019Netherlands: Holcim Nederland Bouwmaterialen has recevied certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) for its five concrete plants. The certification process was handled by Kiwa Netherlands.
LafargeHolcim to buy Somanco in Romania
15 July 2019Romania: LafargeHolcim has signed an agreement with Oresa to buy Somaco, precast concrete producers. The transaction will allow LafargeHolcim to develop its position on the Romanian building materials market, where the company is already present in the cement, ready-mix concrete and aggregates segments. No value for the transaction has been disclosed. It is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in late 2019.
“This is our sixth bolt-on acquisition this year and we are delivering on our commitment to further develop our Solutions & Products business segment as part of Strategy 2022 – ‘Building for Growth.’ The acquisition enables LafargeHolcim to enter Romania’s fast growing precast concrete market and to become an integrated solutions provider for our local customers,” said Jan Jenisch, chief executive officer (CEO) of LafargeHolcim.
Somaco operates five precast concrete plants and one plant for aerated blocks in Romania. The company reported net sales of Euro56m in 2018 and has 750 employees. It has a portfolio of precast products for bridges, tunnels, subways and logistics platforms and supplies products for the residential sector.
Italy: Buzzi Unicem says that its Unical subsidiary is the first national concrete producer to earn silver level RSS certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council. The accreditation asserts that a company meets criteria for sustainable practices and operates in a sustainable, environmentally positive manner. Unical’s Strada Berlia concrete batching plant in Turin received the certification in June 2019. The CSC procedure also included certifying the cement produced by Buzzi Unicem’s Robilante Cement plant and the aggregates from Ceretto quarry. The certificate was issued by ICMQ, the Italian Certification Body member of CSC. Unical manages more than 100 concrete plants in Italy.
France: HeidelbergCement France has finalised the acquisition of Cemex’s Centre region aggregates and ready-mixed concrete businesses. The acquisition includes seven aggregate quarries and 28 ready-mixed concrete plants. The acquired aggregates reserves and resources amount to about 25Mt. HeidelbergCement France will fully integrate the operations into its own network.
“With this acquisition, we strengthen our vertically integrated market position in central France,” said Bernd Scheifele, chairman of the managing board of HeidelbergCement. “The operations fit very well into our existing network of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete plants in the Paris region, and we expect significant synergies.”
Cemex receives certification from Concrete Sustainability Council for German concrete plants
21 March 2019Germany: Cemex has received certification from the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) certification for five of its ready-mix concrete (RMX) plants in Berlin and Potsdam. The CSC acts as a certification system, grading building materials facilities on environmental, social and governance practices throughout supply chains. The auditing was conducted by Kiwa Deutschland, an independent certification body recognised by the CSC.
Germany: Cemex has reached a binding agreement to sell its aggregates and ready-mix concrete assets in the north and northwest regions of Germany to GP Günter Papenburg for around Euro87m. It expects to sign the final agreement in April 2019 and close the divestment during the second quarter of 2019.
The assets in Germany being divested consist of four aggregates quarries and four ready-mix concrete (RMX) plants in north Germany, and nine aggregates quarries and fourteen RMX plants in northwest Germany.
The proceeds expected to be obtained from this divestment will be used mainly for debt reduction and for general corporate purposes. The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approval.
Votorantim Cimentos buys United Materials in the US
20 March 2019US: Brazil’s Votorantim Cimentos has acquied United Materials, a producer of aggregates, concrete and building materials, for an undisclosed amount. The purchase was conducted by its subsidiary Votorantim Cimentos North America. United Materials operates four ready-mix concrete plants, one aggregate quarry and two building materials units in the western part of New York state. It has around 140 employees.
Cemex sells assets in the Baltics and Nordic countries
21 February 2019Europe: Cemex has signed a deal to sell its assets in the Baltic and Nordic countries to Germany’s Schwenk for Euro340m. The transaction is expected to complete within the first quarter of 2019, subject to regulatory approval.
The Baltic assets being divested consist of one 1.7Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Broceni, Latvia, as well as four aggregates quarries, two cement quarries, six ready-mix concrete plants, one marine terminal and one land distribution terminal in that country. The assets divested also include Cemex’s approximate 38% indirect interest in a 1.8Mt/yr cement plant in Akmene in Lithuania. In addition, the exports business to Estonia is also included as part of the divestment.
The Nordic assets being divested consist of three import terminals in Finland, four import terminals in Norway and four import terminals in Sweden.
ACC’s earnings rise by 11% to US$267m in 2018
06 February 2019India: ACC’s operating earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 11% year-on-year to US$267m in 2018 from US$296m in 2017. Its new sales increase by 12% to US$2.02bn from US$1.80bn. Cement sales volumes grew by 8.4% to 28.4Mt from 26.2Mt. Ready-mix concrete (RMX) sales grew by 16.6% to 3.16Mm3 from 2.71Mm3.
The cement producer said that despite rising prices of slag, petcoke and diesel it had focused on productivity and an improved raw material mix. It also built 18 new RMX plants during the year.
LafargeHolcim buys concrete companies in the US and Germany
04 February 2019US/Germany: LafargeHolcim has acquired ready-mix concrete businesses in the US and Germany. On 1 February 2019 it acquired Transit Mix Concrete, a supplier of building materials in Colorado and subsidiary of Continental Materials Corporation, for US$27m. As part of the transaction, LafargeHolcim takes ownership of Transit’s seven concrete plants and a sand quarry. Transit Mix has more than 180 employees.
In January 2019, LafargeHolcim acquired the precast and ready-mix concrete businesses of Alfons Greten Betonwerk in northern Germany. Greten operates one precast and one ready-mix concrete plant in the state of Lower Saxony. Greten employs around 100 people.
“In line with our Strategy 2022 – Building for Growth, these acquisitions will generate synergies with LafargeHolcim’s existing operations. With these further bolt-on acquisitions we are delivering on our commitment to accelerate growth in the ready-mix concrete and aggregates segments,” said chief executive officer (CEO) Jan Jenisch.
